Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Bits: Triumph and Tragedy, RIP Derek Boogaard

Condolences go out to the family of Derek Boogaard, the NY Rangers and the Minnesota Wild for the loss of 28 year old forward Derek Boogaard who was found dead yesterday at his apartment in Minnesota at the age of 28.  Boogaard did not play the second half of this season as he recovered from a concussion he suffered in a fight with the Ottawa Senators' Matt Carkner.  At this time, there appears to be no foul play involved and an autopsy is scheduled for today.  There is some speculation that the concussion may have been a contributing factor, however, that is not known at this time.  Regardless of fan affiliation or your stance on fighting and the enforcer in the game, I think all can agree that it is always a tragedy when a person is taken at such an early age.  Thoughts and prayers for all who knew him. Rest in Peace Derek Boogaard

In a time like this the rivalry doesn’t matter at all, he was a great guy and i was shocked to see the news

That is a shame.

This is simply a shame. He was one of the best at what he did. R.I.P. Derek.

At 28 you have to wonder if the NHL will learn anything from this event and start enforcing some of the rules they say they enforce. The fact that he suffered a concussion not so long before his demise can’t rest well on Collie’s shoulders. Granted it didn’t come from an actual play (excluding fighting from actual game play) during the game but it still occurred during an NHL game. Knowing that Sidney Crosby is suffering set backs with his rehab and many others have experienced similar conditions at what seems to be an increasing rate perhaps the time has come for a new disciplinarian replace the wheel of justice.

David Perron is just another example of how the concussions have become rampant. I believe Roenick said something stupid about that hit as well.

the concussion killed him?

they didn’t release what killed him. could be anything from concussion. drugs. skanky mistress, food poisoning, flu, suicide, heart issue?

shouldn’t jump to conclusions…

one thing i read was no sign of physical trauma

by Khan Noonien Singh on May 14, 2011 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't jumping to conclusions.

I said that the fact that he suffered this concussion not so long from the time of his death was cause for concern for Collie. Perhaps I could have worded that a little more clearly and not been so leading with my statement but in a way you prove my point. The association of this death will be tied to the NHL if anything is found to be wrong with his head regardless of the truth. Some less informed people may already blame the NHL regardless of the absence of an actual autopsy to determine the truth.

RIP

I found about this last night, and boy was it profound. To here about a guy like dying at such a young age…I’m just at a loss. Ranger or not, he always seemed like a good guy. Its hard to see this happen.

Goodbye Boogard,
Islander Country will miss you

Bailey Should Talk to Grabner About Weight Loss

IMHO, Bailey looks like he slowed down ever since he bulked up. I think he too could benefit from losing weight, even if its muscle.

by rmblifn on May 14, 2011 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

Is it wrong...

That the first thing that came to my mind when I read that Boogaard was dead was that Glen Sather had him bumped off to get out from that terrible contract? LOL.

In all seriousness though it is tragic. No one should die at such a young age. I always liked him when he played for the Wild.

The New York Islanders....they make opposing goalies look gooooood.

Horrible news, just horrible

It did remind me of the Cherepanov tragedy, which reminded me of Sather demanding a compensatory pick because Cherepanov hadn’t signed (and thus was technically a “defector” by his reading), which I have to admit brought my thoughts to how Sather inadvertently gains from this.

Lighthouse Hockey: Stay classy, my friends. Er, stay thirsty, my brother. Aw hell, whatever.

by Dominik on May 14, 2011 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO, Rangers Seeking Pick for Cherepanov was Totally Classless and in Bad Taste

First, it took a rather imaginative reading of the CBA to do it. Second, it’s pathetic. Your organization suffers a tragedy like that and all you can think of is how to immediately replace the guy with as high a pick as you can get? And then Sather got praised for being a jerk. If the Islanders were ever in that situation, I would hope that they’d have the good sense to show some dignity and class and pass on whatever pick they could get just because a member of their organization may have died.

Yeah....

I’d say that is pretty wrong….. I like to think the Islanders’ fans have class, but I guess there are exceptions in any fanbase…..

Tragic loss for the hockey world.

We will have to wait to see if the concussion that he suffered had any impact on his passing.

The way this is going the Captian of the next Cup contending Islanders team is still in grade school......Results do matter..

RIP boogeyman. You were an incredible enforcer and incredible person off the ice.

I wonder what the autopsy is gonna say. I’d guess heart attack. I remember hearing that every offseason he’d have a big weight fluctuation(maybe ~30lbs I think), I think that would cause a heart attack.

On Weber,

Gotta think if he isn’t re-signed by July 1st, someone’s throwing an offersheet at him. I know he wants a cup, but it’s going to be really hard to do it in a town where you can’t attract any free agents even with repeat playoff runs and have just about no offense. Rinne ever cools off, they are a borderline playoff team again.

Then some comparables to what weber will/should be looking for:
-Chara was on a $7.5mi/yr contract around his prime, now on a ~$7mil/yr one next year.
-Lidstrom was making over $7mil recently, over $7.5mil/yr.
-Pronger was making $6.25mil/yr a little earlier in his career, and is listed at over $7mil for 4yrs of his new “long” contract(with a smaller cap hit).
-Bouwmeester is making $6.7mil/yr
-Boyle is making $6.66mil/yr

With all the “top” d-men in the nhl making over $6mil/yr easy(even at an age past their prime), gotta think Weber is worth at least $6mil/yr with a big hometown discount, on a fair/equal market, Weber is worth $7mil/yr+. If the Preds don’t flash at least $6.5mil/yr at him, it would be disgraceful to Webs. What do you guys think?

If Radulov

Actually comes back next year like is rumoured then they are already one key piece closer to a cup: a game changing forward who can create his own offense. And have him still on the last year of an ELC.

I personally don't think he's coming back,

and I think it’s going to take more then 1 25goal scorer to fix the 8th worst offense in the nhl. They are living off of amazing goaltending right now(and the system a little bit). If Rinne goes back to being an average goalie, nashville is back to being a borderline playoff team. They have nothing with average goaltending. They don’t have enough offensive prowess to make a serious playoff run without elite goaltending. Do you think Rinne is gonna repeat his .930 save percentage next year? Because if he declines even a little bit, the preds are fighting for the last playoff spot (if the west wasn’t already tight enough).

They have nothing with average goaltending

Nothing except probably the best D pairing in the league.
Also don’t forget that they had a couple of their top offensive guys injured most/all of the year. I think more free agents might be willing to sign there now after this year

But 1 pairing doesn't make a team. I don't think so, but we'll see. I think they are in for a big fall-out next season.

Either Rinne is going to prove himself an elite goalie or nashville is going back to being a borderling playoff team with attendance problems. They have had to trade or draft every important player in their organization, until they can attract non-drafted players to stay there longterm, they have a ton of problems on their hands.

Which injured offensive players are you talking about? Lombardi? Goc? Geoffrian? Because those guys aren’t the answers to their offensive problems.

I Was Not Overly Impressed with Weber or Suter

They got beat badly a few times during the Canucks series. They didn’t step up at all. On extended viewing against a good team I wasn’t knocked out by either one of them.

Not for nothing

but anyone else notice the lack of coverage @ NHL .com concerning the Grabner signing? I mean yesterday was a pretty slow day for the NHL. Youd think the resigning of a Calder finalist to a lucrative deal would be better than some of the outdated nonsense that frequents the headlines over there…

Yep

Webby’s got a bit of that discussion in this FanPost, FYI.

I think you have to look at the Winter Classic as a TV event/cash cow, and thus NBC and willing advertisers are going to be calling the shots. Doesn’t make me want to watch it, but if it makes it easier for revenue sharing to keep the league as big as it is, I can almost tolerate it.

What's the worst part about it is

The Rags are a fucking mediocrity. Put the Flyers up against Montreal or a Western conference team and it’ll be a better game, but the Rags? Ugh.

by Fabtraption on May 14, 2011 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

In case you didn't notice

the Flyers are owned by Comcast/NBC – which also, by the way owns Spectacor, which manages Nassau Coliseum – and the Rangers are always part of the league’s “make it in New York, make it anywhere” strategy, even with strong teams now popping up in all kinds of other places.

by kennyboy13 on May 15, 2011 5:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Not in any way

a Ranger fan, but this latest sad event really hurts – bad, to the point where any horrible truth that might come out of the circumstances is something I’d rather not know. Can’t imagine what his family and friends must be feeling right now.

by kennyboy13 on May 15, 2011 5:26 AM EDT reply actions

I know what you mean

It’d be plenty if they just let the autopsy and toxicology report speak to the cause of death first — it’s not like Boogaard is a terribly famous figure whose death needs daily updates. But you just know in the coming days/weeks “intrepid” reporters will be digging for drama to find any seedy details about his personal life. And any they uncover, their editors will run with all-caps headlines — oh, hi Post, how ya’ doin’?

Lighthouse Hockey: Stay classy, my friends. Er, stay thirsty, my brother. Aw hell, whatever.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
