Congrats guys and Grabner!

Wonder how much it was for? $2M?

The Isles don't usually give numbers

They make us have to go to capgeek later. But whoo hoo!

Apparently it's $3M per year.

According to reporter Katie Strang (see posting above).

Only half a year 'til Opening Night! ... *Sigh!*

Awesome news

Wonder how much per. I’m guessing it increases over the contract from 2ish to 4ish, with the average coming in a little over 3ish.

by afrosupreme on May 13, 2011 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah I don't think he would sign for 5 years if he wasn't getting a good raise out of it

I’d guess similar to Matty Mo’s deal, maybe even more because he is younger and was a 1st rounder.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

Bailey

I’d only want Josh wrapped up if it were on the cheaps. I wonder what happens to him if we draft Couturier

I'm just glad it wasnt for 15 years

I’m sure Garth had to down talk Wang to a 5 year deal

I fully expected Garth to give him 1 year @ 2.5 ala Moulson and make Grabs prove himself again. I’d say Grabs is less of a wildcard then Matt was, given his draft prestige.

by backstop87 on May 13, 2011 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

That's perfect

If he can average 30+ a season over those 5 years that is actually dirt cheap. Good deal for both sides.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

by Anarcurt on May 13, 2011 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

huge gap in my expectations...

I really don’t expect 30+ per year… but…
high side: He comes out of the gate with linemates that are going to support his offensive abilities and he can easily push that number to 40+
downside: he takes an extra month to “get into it”… which pushes nino into his slot with Frans and Kyle… and he stalls with Bailey and Comeau… 15-20?
Realistic: He sees a lot more shadowing 5-on-5, teams always keep a defenseman on their blue line when he’s on the ice… and he becomes teh focus of divisional MAULING… I don’t want to bring up the “I” word either… 20-25 would be great if he plays a good two way and propels Frans and Kyle into the 20-25 goal range as well.

Be careful...

if you disrupt the things at that point and say… hide him in a closet… the bruins wind up with a better defenseman and maybe the Islanders get skunked three years in a row…
I’ll take the 15 years of utter hell to have the 4 years of bliss in front of it. We’ll get out of the funk eventually… NOBODY will ever do what they did in the dynasty years… nobody… EVER!

Wow, that's a long commitment.

Happy about the extension, but would have preferred 3-4 years.

Of note: a 5 year deal goes through the 2015-2016 season….aka the season after the lease runs out. This is the first deal (other than DiPi and maybe Yashin) that does that.

This news rather rocks

Nice trade of UFA years for security, (although who knows what happens in the next CBA, but I can’t imagine the UFA age being pushed higher).

Since we all know Grabs is faster than the speed of light...

Garth should make Grabs skate back in time to May 2000 and break both DiPietro’s knees…while he’s there he can kick Mike Milbury in the box!!

by backstop87 on May 13, 2011 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

The breakdown is kinda interesting

Next year he only makes $1 mil and it steps up another million each year. So Wang is paying out less right now while the team waits for a new arena and to get the fans back and will pay more when revenue is probably higher.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

by Anarcurt on May 13, 2011 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

True, although this is fairly common when signing an RFA into his UFA years

Also, a benefit of deals like this for small-market teams is that later on, if a trade needs to be made, a small market team can swap a high-salary/low-cap hit guy near the end of his contract to a cap-max team that can afford to pay out cash but doesn’t have as much cap room.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
