Sunday Links and IIHF Supplemental Discipline For Hit On Radek Martinek

Our felled Czech. Here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery!

[Updated with IIHF rules and video support of headshot policy @10:40 AM EDT ]

For those who missed yesterday's news from the world championships, Radek Martinek suffered a concussion and hematoma and will most likely miss the remainder of the world championships in Austria. [Fanshot Here] Unfortunately, there is little chance of sending cousin Mike (or is it Miche?) or the stache to Austria as is typical Islander pugilistic wont. It is however, refreshing to see that Latvian defenseman and Atlanta Thrashers prospect Arturs Kulda was suspended for 3 games by the IIHF for the vicious hit in a timely and decisive manner with none of the typical gibberish and buffoonery we are used to seeing out of Colin Campbell and the powers that be in the NHL.  I would assume in a short tournament like the world championships that 3 games is like 20 games in the NHL equivalency scale that tells us that one playoff game is like two regular season games...it's a little early for math though, so I'll leave that up to you.

Today's playoff action finds us another matinee as Detroit at San Jose begins at 3pm (NBC).  San Jose has a 1-0 advantage in the series that marks the return of Henrik Zetterberg (who missed all of round one) and Johan Franzen (who missed one game) for the Red WingsDwayne Roloson and the Southlander (Lightning) boys are in Washington at 7pm (Versus) looking to improve their 1-0 series advantage. This fanshot examines the "sellers remorse" created from Sean Bergenheim's recent playoff tear.

Video of the Martinek hit and background on IIHF rules and video support of the IIHF headshot policy and some general links and Islander news and mentions...guess which Sound Tiger signed a contract in Europe....Enjoy your Sunday.

Star-divide

Martinek is expected to leave the hospital today and appears to be "okay".  Unfortunately, this comes at a time where he doesn't have a contract for next season and depending on his recovery, could impact his playing/contract status for next year.  Good luck for a speedy recovery for Radek.

I am interested

in finding out exactly how the IIHF determines their suspensions, and if this suspension to Kulda is an aberration or if it’s the norm (i.e. is there any consistency in their decisions).

I just put them there

I went on a little search after you mentioned it. Figured the IIHF rulebook would be kind of accessible, so why not.

Yeah I did the same

Found out some interesting stuff, apparently suspensions are handed out by the first directorate with help from a disciplinary committee if he/she/it asks for it. Trying to nail down the exact procedure is seeming to be a little difficult, I can post the statutes and bylaws I did fine if you want.

Hisey Leaving

is going to hurt. I hope Garth brings in someone, instead of asking all the youngsters to do all the heavy lifting again. A Jason Krog type would be perfect.

Shocking right?

Not sure where I found that originally…You wonder what they know about college transfers already…

On a sidenote. The championship is held in Slovakia, not Austria.

Get well radek.

Thanks David

Did the US play their preliminary game in Austria? Maybe thats what I’m thinking…or because the only coverage we had here was Austrian for that game…

No problem

Don’t think they played in Austria. Supposed to be played in the cities Bratislava and Kosice (not sure about spelling) both located in Slovakia. Don’t know about the Austrian coverage.

Just saw Tavares and Skinner shine against France (not a diffucult thing to do but) with Chris Steward doing the dirty work. Tavares looked sharp!

if this were an NHL game

Radek would have gotten a 10 minute misconduct, Isles fined 500,000 for allowing players to fake injuries, and suspended Trevor Gillies for 25 games for apparently no reason. I mean cmon, this was a hockey play after all.

Colie, take notice of how it SHOULD be done.

What the fish, stick?

IIHF has it right

A hit to the head is not a clean hit…

There is just way toooo many archaic rules in the NHL that make exceptions. I think it’s these exceptions that make it difficult for players to play the game consistently. Nobody needs to knock someone’s skull around to gain possession of the puck. Sometimes I think a player hits an opponent as hard as they can to really hurt the other guy.

As was mentioned in the video. Concussions are cummulative. Sidney Crosby isn’t out this long because of the hit he took… It’s the cummulative effect of the hits.

Think of some great players who have had their careers ended prematurely due to chronic concussion issues. Pat LaFontaine, Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau … and now Dan Hamhuis is considering retirement… I guess that depends on whether or not the Canucks win the Cup this year.

I guess this is a hot debate … but one thing that isn’t debatable … Concussions will eventually end careers.

IIHF sponsors

I hope Marty recovers, word today is that he’s out of hospital and feeling OK. Who knows if he’s back next year, but I appreciate all his service on some horrible teams.

I couldn’t help notice that even the refs have logos on their helpmets and sweaters (looks very bad – no surprise). Is that some olympic ring type logo for the IIHF or some corporate sponsor?

God I hope we never see logos like that in the NHL.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
