Hockey Players that Irk You

I'll go first: Tyler Kennedy. No idea why, he just does.

Since I need 75 words (never knew that) here's some more:

Phil Kessel, though I almost kinda feel bad for the guy. I will never, ever understand how anyone thought he was worth 2 1st round picks. Ever.

All of the Staal brothers, though I think I'm kinda coming around to Eric. The other two just irk the shit out of me.

Max Talbot, meh.

Danny Briere

Olli Jokinen, ugh.

I really liked Dubinsky for awhile, then it seems it's gone to his head, now he comes off like a prick. I dunno.

I actually don’t mind Crosby. I maybe the only non-Pens fan to say that. But he really doesn’t bother me. He’s a great player, seems like a nice enough guy.

To me Dubinsky

is one of those players that annoys me on other teams, but i wouldnt mind having him on the island
Great work along the boards, decent goal scoring and good passing abilities, great PK work
he just has his little douche moments that cant be forgiven on another team, especially the rags

lol, the staals(eric aside) love "finishing" checks late and do play "on the edge" from time to time.

Watching them live points this out big time.

Cooke is numero uno on this list. Goes without saying why.

Avery, not for the shenanigans, but for trying to fight every non-fighter in the nhl one at a time. lol

Orpik for trying to light up every player in sight even if:
-it takes him out of position
-the whistle is blown
-it can potentially harm his goalie
-it’s a late hit
and for loving to keep his hands up when playing/hitting people(watch him play).

A number of “agitators” that refuse to drop the gloves (clutterbuck and phaneuf for example).

Pretty much all players that love throwing blindside hits. (phaneuf and cooke are great examples)

“Backup” goalies with something to prove in hockey fights(Cough, Brent Johnson, Cough).

Ultimately most heavyweight enforcers because they suck at 2-way hockey but love creating useless fights and taking up needed roster spots to better players.

I don’t follow the west that much, but corey perry is up there in the west.

Nothing really irks me a ton, but these little things/players stick out when I think about it.

How did I forget Phaneuf?

Cooke doesn’t irk me so much as I really just feel dislike for him.

I’ve moved past Avery. I said in a other thread I’ve reached a level of indifference with him, which, I think, means “I won.” :) He’s almost a non-entity out there now, just another 3rd line guy.

I have no problem with the Johnson/DP fight, that was as much DPs fault as anything. I also have no problem with Johnson calling out Haley, I do have a problem, however, with both Godard and Johnson pounding on Haley when he was down.

by Les Beaver on Apr 22, 2011 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I blame DP definitely for half of that goalie fight, but the other half goes to that haymaker throwing johnson.

So much, Orpik

The master of checking players into his own goal’s crossbar, goalie be damned. He did the same “Grabner treatment” to Bergenheim earlier in this playoff series (the one where the Pens were getting blown out, of course). When they talk about the difference between playing physical and playing with zero regard or respect for your union “brother” {cough}, I think of guys like Orpik. He basically does mini-versions of Chara on Pac all the time.

Also on the list…

Cooke
Avery
Clutterbuck
Briere – dirty player, stickman
Luongo – aloof, acts like nothing bothers him, but has the deer in headlights look
Carcillo
Pronger
Bertuzzi

I’m sure there are plenty more, but can I please include John Tortorella? Is there a coach with a more punchable face?

by Carl Rackie on Apr 22, 2011 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Tomas Holmstrom

I’ve always found him to be extremely dirty. Because he parks himself in every goalie’s face, and plays for a perennial Cup contender, he gets lauded as a “throwback to old time hockey. Eddie Shore!” . How he doesn’t get called for goalie interference every time he steps on the ice, I have no idea. It feels like he’s been doing this since 1984.

He’s very good at what he does and has the rings to back it up. But I’ll bet if the Islanders, or any other team not called the Red Wings, had a player that used the same tactics, they’re be pitchfork-and-torch wielding mobs out gunning for him.

After him, it’s the usual suspects: Avery, Cooke, Talbot. Basically anybody willing to throw an elbow at a guy’s head and not fight someone afterward.

The usual suspects irk me…any penguin or ranger. I also despise Kovalchuck. Not because he didn’t sign with the Isles (i’m happy he didn’t) but because all he really cared about was the money and doesn’t have the game to back it up. Same with Joe Thorton! Crosby – big cry baby, he hit me….he hit me….he couldn’t play in the days of the Broadstreet bullies, Bruins or Isles. He would have get his !#$#$ beat for whining so much
Briere – he and gaborik must be cousins
Pronger – uses his stick like an old fashion cop to tune up his man…

Brent Johnson – We need a heavy weight to knock that #$#$$ smile off his face after he clocked DP

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
