Watching The R@g$ vs Capitals

Don’t know who, if anyone, is on here, but this is my first chance to view playoff hockey since I got rid of cable.

Two of my least favorite teams, but you take what you can get.

by Jones79 on Apr 17, 2011 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

I've seen a couple of their games

Very boring. Rangers tend to do that, and the Caps kind of now as well since they switched to “defense” instead of firewagon hockey

Doesn't even look like

the playoffs. About the same speed and intensity as the regular season…except Doc Emerick, he’s mid playoffs form.

My wife thinks Doc is the best.

Isn’t he always in mid-playoff form?

by Jones79 on Apr 17, 2011 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Kind of

I really miss Thorne and Clement from when ESPN had coverage. They are like listening to old Madden and Summerall to me. Every game with whatever teams, they sounded excited and knowledgeable.

The Rags

Nice 5 on 3 powerplay there

Constantly building for the future.

Barry Beck

would be proud of that effort….I don’t know why they didn’t get them moving side to side at the point. They kept working it low to high and back and waiting for a bad angle shot. McCabe was open throughout at the top of the circle out to Neuvirth’s left…with a screen in front. Terrible waste of a 5 on 3.

you'd think they'd be used to it

I never see anyone get as many 5 v 3s as the evil Pond Scum rangers. They should be experts at it by now.

Why is Mike Milbury still alive?

Cant he just go away or something?

For anyone that missed this

Here’s Tortorella dropping another F-Bomb on Brooksie…(at the end)

I never get how Brooks gets a free pass in these exchanges. I love critical questions when you’re actually searching for information and context, but when you’re just trolling for columnist fodder, well…“professional hockey writers” indeed.

by Dominik on Apr 17, 2011 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

I felt like Tortorella is right. Why are you trying to trip him up there? Is there any use to that at this point? The guy has to prepare for a playoff game any you’re going to break his chops about if he has EVER had his “back against the wall?” Does big Larry think that Torts is trying to deceive the community at large? Folks want to know if you are lying about how you felt two weeks ago?

And I love how half the media thinks it’s just Tortorella being an ass again. Questions like that would make me say worse…bottom line, right now, no, no he doesn’t feel his back against the wall.

I felt like Tortorella is right.

One of the things that annoys me about the hatred between these two is that I sometimes find myself on Torts side.
Brooks is sooooooooo annoying.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Rangers suck, MG really looks lack luster.

Did he know that when he moved to NY that he would have nobody to dish him the puck. Boring game.

Islanders, do whatever it takes to get in the playoffs next year just so we do not have to comment on other teams shitty games.

by ghalbart on Apr 17, 2011 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

I think

that the Rangers aren’t as bad as they look, it’s that Washington is just that good. They’ve really changed how they play the game and are winning ugly with defense. They’re going to give other teams the same kind of trouble. The shot totals so far are
25 NY-33 Wash (OT)
22 NY-18 Wash
11 NY 7 Wash

They are really limiting shots and chances (both sides really). Not what I’m used to seeing out of the Caps, but they’re showing that they can win with their depth and without their top players producing. That is a real good thing in the playoffs.

no doubt that has been their goal since the past couple of year ousts.

Its extremely boring game though right now.

Well now that they are down a goal, I guess they can challenge a bit more.

Glenn Healy beating up current Penguin announcer Bob Errey. I know it made me feel better.

MARIO LEMUIEX???

I thought this kind of stuff hurt his belief in the sport??? I am shocked – SHOCKED AND APPALLED at his behavior!!! :(

Anyone see that Pens fan giving Moulson a hard time on Twitter? Moulson said in response something along the lines of “I’ll lend you my Ivy league degree, maybe that will smarten you up.” Pens fans really can’t get over that beating they took (the 9-3 one more than the physical stuff, I think.) Poor wittle Pens fans.

Giving Grabs some shit too

when he criticized the Torres hit. I have this belief that there are many Pens fans that jumped on the bandwagon once they started winning. They had minimal hockey knowledge to begin with, are between 15-25 years old, and are completely tainted about the rule book and how the sport is supposed to work because their coverage runs through Steigerwald and Errey.

#mattcooke DUH!

And they gave that ass clown an A.

They have a very “new” fan base, no doubt. And they know nothing about anything beyond their won team (and now Trevor Gillies). There is actually a bit of reason among some of the “older” fans, but the dopes are so loud and overwhelming it’s hard to hear the rationality. This past year has made me so bitter toward the Pens fans (and announcers….and the whole organization, really). Just so much hypocrisy and ignorance.

but nope only the one that obscures the puck
seriously though that was a tough one

My guess is the official clock was different from the pretty NBC graphical clock.

Kirill will play Jonathan Huberdeau and the St. John’s Sea Dogs in the next round. I will try to link up audio if I can find it, because he is a terrifically entertaining interview. Seems like the media loves him up there.

I have become a Winterhawks fan..

Started to listen to their games because of Nino and I have become a fan. Since my Isles and Amerks are out of it, I need somebody to cheer for.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
