Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

Newsday's Katie Strang reported earlier today DiPietro bristled when confronted with questions about his place on the goaltending depth chart, but both Montoya and Poulin are expected to push him for the starting spot next year.

"The 29-year-old feigned confusion when asked about his competition in training camp, asking "Who are we talking about here?," but the numbers make it abundantly clear.

Montoya led the team in wins with a record of 9-5-5 and finished with a save percentage of .921 and 2.39 goals against average. Before a freak injury in warm-ups ended his season in February, Poulin posted a GAA of 2.44 and save percentage of.924. DiPietro finished last in the league in GAA ( 3.44 ) among all goaltenders with 25 games or more and second to last with a .886 save percentage."

To me, the audio does not sound overly harsh, but DP becomes hushed in response to the previous question...which was similar.

This is out of character for Katie Strang who is generally very conservative in Islander criticism. Make no mistake, while Chris Botta did write a story on this for IPB, the original was not his doing.

Additional interesting answers from PA Parenteau on the differences between Gordon and Capuano and Haley and Gillies were good as well. I have not listened to all of them.

I've twittered it

But I think they are making a mountain out of a molehill. DP Sounds as confused as me when someone first mentioned this soundbite (Whose the 3rd goalie) and I don’t think he comes off as having an ego.

I just don’t see a goalie whose coming off a 2nd dislocated kneecap (and did it to the knee he didn’t hurt originally) threatening to start in the NHL next year. Poulin was good, but he obviously needed more time in the AHL before he got hurt. And we’ve seen with Mikko this year how much an injury can hold a guy back.

I go back and forth on it

Tone of voice was clearly upset at first, then agitated for Strang,

Then this

(Whose the 3rd goalie)

You’re not implying that he’s not aware there are two other guys with better numbers than he and another who had a pretty good career up until he came down with waiveritis. It does sound to me more like “like who’s gonna beat me out” than “I’m sorry Ms. Strang to which of my teammates are you referring.”

It's also possible he thought maybe they were throwing Nabokov into the mix and he simply wanted clarification.

Which would actually make it four, so when they ask about three, it’s easy to see how that can be confusing.

Or it's just understood that Poulin will be in BPT.

I’m not a huge Dp fan, but I don’t think the Botta / Strang intonations are quite fair.

Tough to say

But I honestly do think DP could’ve been wondering “wait, which guy?” because he happened to watch about four of them rotate through this year. Meanwhile, I think he’s personally closest to Lawson (who’s a free agent), didn’t see much of Mikko but knows he was drafted high, and might think of Poulin as in rehab.

I’m not one to defend DP’s demeanor, but I do think that’s a plausible explanation. To me the bigger shock would be if DP sees himself as the #1 goalie (although his employer has never given him reason to think otherwise).

This is what will hold us back if they dont reassess the situation

After listening to it....

…. I think DP was just high at the time. I mean listen to him… he was practically slurring his speech and didn’t understand a rambling question that mentioned something about optimism, three goalies, next year, and I believe I heard something about pizza.

But seriously, I think that it’s easy to forget about Poulin, because even the majority of people on this site were pretty much assuming he’d need at least another year in minors to be brought along the right way. The fact that he was playing so well up here I think makes us optimistic about him making the big club out of training camp next year, and that’s fine, but his time up here was (to quote Dom) a rather small sample size.

That’s not to say he will or will not compete for a job next training camp, but I can see why DP might have not thought about him when they mentioned the possibility of three goalies.

Come on

How’s DP’s sample size looking? With worse outcome. I know you probably want to believe that about DP, I do too…but to think that he is not aware of one of his teammates, who plays his position, and looked like a goaltending god and spurned a bunch of “KP” chants, I can’t buy that.

Hey, I didn't say he was quick on the uptake!

In fact, his slow reaction time was his biggest problem this year. I just think he was thrown for a loop. He didn’t see the question coming.

I refuse to say if he’s washed up or not. Not yet. At the present, there’s no point in begging to keep him or throw him away, because he will most definitely be there at training camp (barring a freak BBQ injury, which we all know is definitely possible with him). I imagine next season, with a whole summer to get better and ready, we will see what DP still has. Until then, I simply don’t have enough to go on. You know… small sample size. /shrugs

No Konopka?

Why does Eaton get one? Is it just him answering the question “And you are….?” over and over?

by Les Beaver on Apr 10, 2011 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

I think it would awesome if some previously unknown Dane name Neils Fransen showed up for the WCs and led them to glory.

“Ya, we did real well…oh ya ya, too bad Frans Neilsen couldn’t be here, he is so awesome, right? He’s like my hero and idol. Such a wonderful human being, I know…maybe next year.”

Maybe

they’ll have a separate one for him…can you really capture the essence of Z sans video? Shouldn’t Eaton have picked his crap up months ago?

This is very telling if what Im reading here is true

The org still allows DP to think he owns the #1 spot even tho he sucks and we have Monty who deserves the top spot…We have to cut the cancer

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
