Third injury in two years

That has me really worried about his long-term viability as an NHL defenseman. 47 games last year and 60 games this year.

Let’s just hope he rebounds in the fall and comes back 100% healthy.

by Fabtraption on Mar 25, 2011 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

AMac and Martinek should share a padded apartment.

You’re right to be worried about his viability at this level given his health problems to date.

Not really- he played at least 20 games in Bridgeport as well.

From Staple at Newsday

Will be unable to skate until September It appears he has been playing through the pain since February and now that any lingering hope for the playoffs is gone he’s just going to get the surgury done.

“It’s not something that’s impossible to play through, but everyone just felt that at this point in the season, it’s best to try and be prepared for next season,” said MacDonald

You mean to tell me shooting the puck from 70 feet out doesn't earn us extra goals?

by Anarcurt on Mar 25, 2011 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus H. Tavares

Why the hell has he been playing the past month? Playoffs were a pipe dream at best. This is like the Mets keeping guys in the lineup instead of getting them surgery on the basis of some absurd longshot coming through.

So really this is an elective surgury and he's doing it now so he's back on his skates in time for camp

If he’s been playing through that for a month there really was little sign of it. He’s looked like his normal self most nights.

You mean to tell me shooting the puck from 70 feet out doesn't earn us extra goals?

I thought he looked bad last night though

Who knows what goes on…maybe this is the tank. I think yesterday was the “mathematically completely eliminated” point, so there really is no sense of him playing if he can aggravate it. Again, I just wish it was something new and different from “hip”. It creeps me out. The bonus to me is, imagine how well he’s gonna skate when he’s 100%. Let’s hope he’s ready for the start of the 2011 season.

Actually, I'm kinda annoyed they didn't do this sooner.

Well, I’m annoyed now that I’m hearing what was happening, anyway.

As it stands right now, he’ll be able to skate by September, so long as he suffers no setbacks. He’ll likely not be ready for Opening Night. Meanwhile, the Isles pretty much gave up on the year when they sent Rollie to Tampa. Now, I know they weren’t mathematically eliminated until last night, but seriously, were they expecting to make it to the playoffs? For two weeks, their odds of making the postseason were less than 1%. It seems it would’ve been more prudent to shut him down almost a month earlier, so that he’d have a better shot at being ready for the start of next season.

Yes, I’m aware that it’s great the Isles have been developing chemistry between A-Mac and Hamonic. And winning sure does feel good. And they’ve been filling many seats lately. Momentum is great. But when it comes to the defense, there are two indispensible players: Streit and MacDonald. I would think it would have been much better to have the both of them ready for Opening Night, rather than risk more injury over the past month.

Ready for next season vs Risk of more injury

Now I’m no big city doctor, but I believe a torn labrum is one of those pain causing injuries that once it happens, there really isn’t much risk for it to get worse/better. I had a partially torn shoulder labral in my last year of college eligibility, but was advised by every doctor that I could keep going if the pain wasn’t overly bad without any risk for further injury. I suspect Isle’s docs advised A-Mac similarly- keep playing if you want/can.

Of course, the flip side is that once torn, cartilage does not heal on it’s own, and needs surgery. A-Mac (hopefully) has a long career ahead of him, so I’m guessing he made the choice to screw the last 8 games and get next season started (albeit late…sadly) pain free.

Of course, a real doctor can weigh in here.

by Nyisles82 on Mar 25, 2011 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I stayed in a Holiday Inn express last night

and think that this is the wrong team to fool around with hips! The problem with those pain causing injuries (not a doctor either, and I’m sure you’re aware of this as an athlete) is that they cause compensation/overcompensation problems that lead to other injuries. That ends up being your knee tear, groin pull etc. I really wish there was some kind of way to go through injury reports and get some kind of correlating something that can establish causation or something. If this is just luck, this team is in trouble!

"That's why I don't give you Islander fans anything shiny and new, you're just going to break it" - the Hockey gods

The Streit news had me bummed and not because I thought the last eight games would mean anything. I didn’t want him back if he weren’t 100% ready, but it would have been a relief to not go through the whole summer without knowing if he were really healed or not.

Now we have AMAC out for the summer and we have to “hope” he fully recovers in time. I expect every point to be valuable next year. We can’t afford to get off to a slow start and lose any those early points that have you playing catch up the entire season. The real head scratcher is knowing this was going on for a while, I wish they would have shut him down sooner so that there was more margin to start next season in game shape. I guess that it is too late for that now and he’ll need an optimal recovery schedule.

True, but we'll likely have to trade up our 2nd rounders for them or trade down our 1st rounder for one of them.

With our #1 d-man out(a-mac), that’s a tough 23min/gm+ to replace on defense. Who is the defacto #1 d-man now? And who replaces a-mac as hamonic’s partner on the shutdown d-pair?

What I did when I saw this fanshot

Scrolling down the page, “Andrew MacDonald” caught my eye. I looked over and saw the “hip labrum” part. I immediately hit grief stage 1 with denial; April fools joke. Looked over at the calendar, nope, too early.

Next, I thought “I’m probably going get Rick rolled”, and didn’t click. I went to twitter fist, and saw the Staple tweet and told myself it was a forgery (like McKenzie during the trade deadline). I clicked anyway, because deep in my soul, I knew it was true…

Guys, Guys, chill.

Strang reports possibly just three months, and he’s been carrying this injury for a while. He’s obviously going to have surgery now so that he’ll be BETTER (and play better) next season. This is a positive move, good for the future.

Meanwhile, we get 7 more games to see two things:
1. How good is Hamonic now that is life jacket has been taken away?
2. Can Wishart keep up the good play?

Personally, I’m excited.

Its always GREAT news when you find out a player is injured.

As a matter of fact the sooner he gets hurt the more time he has to recover. You can never get hurt too soon I always say.

No one is saying this is the end of the world, but it still sucks that he’s hurt and it leaves another question mark. Streit was supposed to be back before the end of the season and despite not hearing of any setbacks he won’t be. I’ll just be glad when everyone is healthy or at least the number of injuries is less than ridiculous.

Yes it sucks he’s injured. But he was ALREADY INJURED. Read the news, he was PLAYING HURT. The sooner he decided to stop doing that in a season that was dead, the better.

The injury isn’t positive. The fact that he chose to have the surgery now instead of after the season IS.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
