Don't worry

There was no intent and it was just an unfortunate hockey play. I’m sure Mario and Shero made him sit in the corner facing the wall for the rest of the game and told him “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed in you.” Case Closed.

The History of Matt Cooke: All credit goes to Keith who sent the link forward from PPP.

If someone can fill me in on if there’s any history between Cooke and MacDonnagh feel free, but really it seems like he just wanted to throw an elbow for no good reason.

A Pens fan actually complained about the Rangers having Avery. Avery’s done and said some dumb shit, but he’s only been suspended once (Unless the SBN player profile is wrong) for his sloppy seconds comment.

Avery's sloppy suspension is longer than Cooke's first THREE combined

A repeat offender three time over before the suspension increased. Gillies rule was not in effect.

In fairness

Almost to a man, Pensburgh condemned the hit. And today, he literally cost them the game. They were up 2-1 at the time and the Rags scored 2 or 3 times on the ensuing PPs (some of which was 5 on 3 thanks to a blood drawing high stick on Callahan).

I think for one of the first times today, Ranger fans saw what we see every time we play the Pens; dirty unpenalized play just about all game. I think I understand the strategy now. If you are dirty just about every play, the refs won’t call everything because they feel like they’re calling too much…you’ll get away with more.

A friend of mine had a similar approach to meeting girls at a bar…if you have a 20% success rate, just make sure you talk to 5-10 women and you take one home.

Good to hear that about Pennsburgh

and there are plenty of Pens fans who are against Matt Cooke. Unfortunately there are some Rotten eggs who still refuse to admit that Cooke is a douche

Of course all of this could have been averted if Mario said “Since I’m taking a stand against Head shots and that the league is too weak in penalizing such hits, I’m going to suspend Matt Cooke for the rest of the season and release him in the offseason as I do not agree with his track record”

Time to introduce money to the mouth

Mario Lemieux should offer the NHL his $1 billion dollar fine or whatever the hell he was proposing as a gesture of good will and proof that he isn’t a blow hard. Take the cash right out of the owner’s pocket, namely his.

Next season the Penguin faithful Cooke apologists can pay a little extra for their Pens tickets to balance Mario’s books for him.

And I certainly hope the light is dawning over at Pensburgh… but I can’t help but think that if this play hadn’t hurt the team on the ice, they wouldn’t be horrified.

You wonder...

I think they realize it’s dirty, but still view it differently that Gillies because he has “hockey skill”. They also are aware that he put the GM and ownership in a bad position because they spoke out.

I think Gillies second “hit to the head” ion Clutterbuck s nowhere near as bad as Cooke’s flying elbow so at least you can’t pretend it is a “hockey” play.

Gillies brought his arm up and was coming to the aid of his team mate who was hit with a dangerous cheap shot from behind...

Gillies was doing the honorable thing while Cooks hit was a blatant attempt to elbow another player in the head for no apparent reason…At least Gillies has a reason and it was honorable…This is why the league cant do away with this problem because they actually allow it….The league actually encourages it…Its cause and effect

Isn't his track record worse than Gillies?

I am not trying to be an apologist for Trevor, but judging by the hit, how does he get anything less than Gillies?
Because it was the Penguins he probably gets nothing.

Another question: How is this guy still standing after all of these hits?

by Mulligan on Mar 20, 2011 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

That's the irony, isn't it?

People said they needed to suspend Gillies even more than 10 games because “he hadn’t learned his lesson” etc. Cooke’s history of lessons not received goes back years, and his big “lesson” was going from 2 to 4 earlier this season.

Plus, for the righteous, there’s this from Penguins GM Ray Shero, in SI earlier this season:

"Is [Cooke] a dirty player? Yeah, he’s a dirty player," Shero says. "[Former defenseman] Ulf Samuelsson was a dirty player. But there’s value in that. Is there value in injuring players and getting suspended? No. But there are football players in the Hall of Fame who were dirty. There are brushback pitchers in the Hall of Fame."
Yep. I’ve heard people say Dale Hunter should be in the Hall, too.

What I hate the most about the Matt Cooke defenders...

They keep saying he plays with an edge. What edge is this guy on? The edge between manslaughter and assault? Truly we all like gritty hard hitting players but that does not give them a free pass to try and take someone out. This is the guy who needs to be made an example out of. I’m hoping he’s gone for the season (postseason too) but I do admit I would like the Isles to get a run at the guy on 4/8.

It's terrible that some people still think he should be in the nhl because he's a "good" 3rd liner. Should have been kicked out a while ago, and the only real good he is doing for the pens is putting targets on all their heads for the rest of the league.

Isn’t irony a bitch Mario? I would prefer if Gillies goes this offseason, because he just can’t get suspended and make nationwide headlines, it makes us look like crap. That image needs to leave. 2 hits to the head in 2 consecutive games? Come on. I like the way he enforces and doesn’t throw that many bad hits before the suspensions, but he’s gone over the line and shouldn’t be brought back. It’s either going to be, 1, he’s going to be too soft of an enforcer now or 2, he’s going to be too aggressive. We don’t need either gillies. We need in between clean slate gillies which I we can’t get again because of his resume.

I love Matt Cooke, he's the reason every time a Pens fan talks they put their flipper in their mouth.

I certainly don’t want him on my team and if he is tossed permanently there will just be another guy like him taking his place until the NHL gets serious about dangerous plays. He’s just too easy a target, like Avery on the Rangers and TooToo on the Preds. You really don’t have an argument when you have a guy like that on your team.

At least Avery can say he gets the full brunt on the NHL wheel for words against humanity and Gillies didn’t get any preferential treatment, that’s for sure. I try to make a point to never defend Gillies actions, I just make it very clear that his suspensions are disproportionate to the penalties he committed and the suspensions handed out to repeat offenders like Pronger and Cooke..

Sarcasm is my permanent font.

Matt Cooke is a victim of a learning disability and changes to the rule book
Bylsma said he will work with Cooke, who is experiencing a "learning curve" in an NHL where blindside hits are no longer tolerated.

"He’s played on the edge physically and been an effective player playing that way; and now a lot of him is re-thinking where he can hit and be effective," Bylsma said of Cooke. "He’s not been all that comfortable with that situation." – Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

He doesn’t mean to keep hitting guys from behind and to the head, he is just a slow learner. He felt much more comfortable hitting players when they couldn’t see the hit coming. Bylsma really should stop talking. I tell my kids when they are in trouble, “STOP DIGGING.” Maybe someone should take away Bylsma’s shovel.

Holy hell

How does the ref standing RIGHT ON THE EDGE OF THE CREASE not see the kick to Osgood’s mask? That’s pretty much the textbook definition of intent to injure. And the rulebook is uncompromising when it comes to kicking: match penalty, five minutes in the box. (Rule 49:3) It’s been that way for a while now.

If I were Osgood I’d have beaten the snot out of him.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
