Or Snow could be making room for a big trade, it’s part of the reason Strum was put on waivers by the Kings

the weird thing though

Although Lawson probably won’t be claimed, if he does get claimed before the game the Isles would need to call someone up

Unless they are claiming

Leclaire, Conklin or Mclhenny…Or DP is ready.

Conklin would be interesting

Not high on Mclhenny

See below

But they can’t get claimed before the game tonight. You get the waiver window for every team to put their claim in, and once the 48 hours are up you find out who the winner was (if anyone).

If they are moving or importing bodies at the deadline or after (when DP comes off IR?), they’ll need the flexibility of players who have “cleared” waivers.

true

So either their bringing in another goalie or DP is coming in from IR? And Lawson needs to clear, which I am guessing he will, before being sent down?

by CanadianIsleslifer on Feb 26, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Once you clear waivers, you're clear for 10 games or 30 days

So I assume whenever DP comes back Lawson goes down, but this doesn’t necessarily mean DP’s return is imminent.

I'm not sure which surprises me more

While I’m not surprised that RSH may be leaving, I had figured they would have held on to him to try to trade him (if not at the deadline, then during the offseason)

As for Lawson… that leaves me wondering who’s going to replace him in net. It’s not like we haven’t had our goaltending depth decimated by injuries (plus a trade)

#Isles Rob Schremp and G Nathan Lawson have been placed on waivers. Both in uniform tho tonight

I need to understand waivers better…that’s just weird to me.

by Keith Quinn on Feb 26, 2011 12:23 PM EST reply actions

And this news via Fornabrio...The workings of waivers:
This doesn’t necessarily mean anything immediately. But work backwards: Monday is the trade deadline. Any player in the NHL at 3 p.m. on Monday can’t be sent down. So if the Islanders would want to send either of those guys down at any point beyond Monday, they need them to clear waivers by Monday and send them to the AHL, at least on paper, at 3 p.m. Anyone on waivers after today wouldn’t clear until after the deadline.

by Keith Quinn on Feb 26, 2011 12:28 PM EST reply actions

That's the key right there

This is procedural (well, a necessary procedure), so it doesn’t mean they’re necessarily gone nor out of the lineup tonight.

by Dominik on Feb 26, 2011 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

No big loss with either guy.

Mikko can come up and be a decent #2 to Montoya until DP is ready to return. It looks like RSH is the odd man out since the top two lines are set and the third more or less as well, and Haley has proved to be a solid 4th line player.

The New York Islanders....they make opposing goalies look gooooood.

It's been windy the last few days.

As a shoot out specialist, RSH is irreplaceable. Sure. But watching him forecheck against the Flyers was like watching a rec league player try to compete. I feel this season, despite his injury, he no longer deserves the roster spot.

Lawson. Sure. Depth and frugality be damned.

That was actually my biggest disappointment with his “showcase” game there, much more than anything he did with the puck. Way too many fly-bys.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Schremp claimed.

Lawson is odd. I understand the procedural purpose of the move, but the only reason you’d want Lawson off the team is if you think you’ll have another backup.

Mikko’s not an option, which leaves…DiPi? Really? Why would you bring him back for this season?

by garik16 on Feb 26, 2011 2:16 PM EST reply actions

It’s only odd if someone was going to pick him, of which there is no chance of happening.

trading deadline

you can’t send someone back down to Minors whose on the roster on 3PM on Monday.

It’s a roster move for when DP is back so Lawson can be sent down.

I'm guessing...

Snow couldn’t get anything for Schremp, hence being placed on waivers. Not sure if someone takes Schremp off waivers, would be a little surprised, but then stranger things have happened. I’d be very surprised though if anyone picked Lawson. There just isn’t that many teams out there where Lawson could take a job from someone. It is more interesting b/c of the questions it raises? Wonder if has something to do with DP? I think at this point it is more likely a new backup is coming in than Nabo – don’t think Isles would even want him around now. Rumours McCabe was traded to Rangers…depressing.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
