Top 10 irritations from the 2010-2011 season so far

In this up and down season, there have been a number of regularly occurring irritations that I as a fan have experienced. For whatever it's worth, here they are:

Star-divide

10. Bruno Gervais on the ice...no reason to explain this further. We all see the same thing. Awful awful awful.

9. The negativity of Islanders fans...has gotten old (especially the negative failed efforts at humor seen on twitter. It should be obvious that things are looking up. Can't we enjoy it?

8. Silly trade talk. I know I know...it's part of sports. But get real people. We are not getting Parise or Weber for our number 1 pick. Look around at what has been going on. Either multiple first and second round picks or first round pick AND top prospect AND additional picks and prospects would inevitably be required (e.g. top pick, Niederreiter, Donavan and a future second)...and if you have watched Snow you know that ain't happening. Lower level players? Yes, top pick may work in a trade, but is that what we want?

7.Watching DP and knowing that he is under contract for soooo long. This one will be an albatross with no clear end.

6.Garth Snow bashing. Streit, Moulson, Grabner and to a lesser extent PAP...pretty impressive pickups. The most memorable FA signings are the bad ones, and they vastly outnumber the good ones. The lack of trades? Not sure the bashers have taken the time to think about it, but come on, the cupboard is not exactly filled with great extra assets. Despite the belief of some, packaging Gervais, Hunter, and whomever, is not a particularly appealing package. And, the Comeaus of the worl will bring back similarly flawed players, so we are not exactly in a prime trading position.

5. Drafting complaints. Since 2006 the Isles have done quite well, actually very well. In particular 08 looks like a grand slam...we even have our 6th round pick playing in the NHL right now (Spurgeon). Bailey, Hamonic, Poulin, Martin and Spurgeon in thr NHL already, with Ness, Trivino, Donavan, Petrov, Ullstrom, and even DiBenedetto still in the wings. The Isles have had a remarkable number of mid to late picks looking good. The 2008 draft is likely to be seen as one of the best single drafts ever. Just try to find one better. In any event, time to stop the nonsense about Isles drafting. Is there always going to be SOMEONE who doesn't make it and someone else who does? Of course, but look at the totality.

4. Complaints about "the 15 year rebuild." Fact, the rebuild began AFTER Smyth did not resign with us...the 08 draft was the beginning. So, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011 makes three. Frustrating, yes. Slow, yes, The right way to go, ABSOLUTELY.

3. Any talk that Blake Comeau is a top 6 forward. He is not. Third line/middle six? Maybe, But when he gets third/fourth line minutes is when we will make the playoffs (if he is even with us by then).

2. Listening to, and being influenced by blogging/media types that are in no way hockey experts. Being a former PR guy or having a father who was a hockey reporter, or being a former ECHL player with a dad who was an NHL player does not make one an expert. The opinions they state are no different than ours, yet they excite and enrage the rabble.

1. And, the #1 irritation from this season....and just in time for entry draft season, fan scouting by YouTube, ISS, Hockeyfutures etc. Please please please accept and understand the limits of falling in love with possible draft choices using this approach.

I agree with most of the list

But for me the #1 most irritating thing for me is the inconsistency from the team. We will play well against great teams but then the next game we will come out flat and play terribly. i also completely agree with #9. Things are looking better and are going to get better very soon. Its frustrating to see all the negative comments when they lose 1 game after a good winning streak

Some comments:

10-Gervais is our #8 d-man, and imo has played that role really well. He’s nothing spectacular, he’s not 100% reliable, but he does his job as a #8 depth d-man well. And with all the injuries we’ve had on d this season, you’re lucky you haven’t seen more reese and less gervais. Gervais is a quality depth d-man.

9-Negativity, let’s be real. It goes with the territory, especially during a rebuild. I mean, the second I heard streit and okposo going down before the season started, I predicted us finishing 29th worst at the end of the year ahead of edmonton. I have been pleasantly surprised by the isles play so far and some of the players singularly, especially given the injuries. It is what it is though. It’s hard being optimistic when you have started 6 goalies and were playing your 10th d-man in the same season your superstar d-man goes down.

8-Anything can happen. Who expected Kessel to be dealt to the leafs a couple years ago? Phaneuf to toronto? Who expected us to get Smyth a number of years ago? DP to sign a 15yr deal? Gretzky to LA? Bigger things have happened, so try not to be closeminded.

1-The draft is one of the few things fans of a basement team have to look forward to in a bad season. Looking at and wishing for certain prospects is fun and helps us get through the year. Don’t take that away from us. It helps more then you’d think.

Other then those, I agree with most of the other points to a degree.

Have to agree with Ozzy

However, you are correct about Isles draft record since 2006. I’ve checked into that myself and the answers are obvious. Every dynasty team had draft years that were complete busts, but they also had multple years where they drafted multiple NHLers in the same years, and occasionally a late pick turned into a star. I find a good measurement is the “410 games (five seasons)” = a bonafide NHLer". If you average two bonafide NHLers per draft over the years, that makes up for the odd dud draft, and, your team should also be decent. Example, in eight years, you’d have 16 NHLers through draft. Keep that pace up, you’ve got a steady flow of players coming into organization. 2007 was a bust (no 1st or 2nd) but 08 made it up. Further, with central scouting being what it is today, you most certainly can obtain high level intelligence on players – to the degree that one can predict around a given pick which players will likely be available – barring overdrafts and players slipping. When you look back so far, there are only a few picks where with benefit of 20/20 hindsight Isles should have drafted differently. But certainly, a fan who educates themselves can give a rather informed opinion on players and who’s available, what would fit Isles needs best, etc. The internet has enhanced this, and frankly I think it adds another element to the game. If I were thinking about acquiring a player, say Martinek, I would certainly look at sites like this. Even Bob McKenzie pays scouts for information. Journalist are not necessarily hockey scouts either. In fact, I think it is safe to say most are not.

or being a former ECHL player with a dad who was an NHL player does not make one an expert.

awww, I like Bourne. I think it’s an interesting view point. There’s a big difference between when Milbury talks about being in the locker room with the boys when he was a player and when Bourne talks about it. Bourne can actually relate to the players of this generation even if he wasn’t an NHL caliber player. It makes a world of difference.

Otherwise most of these are what got me motivated to write up the rebuilding post I did a few months ago.

Do people really think the Islanders have been drafting bad?

I didn’t even think that was an issue any more. AMac, Poulin, & Hamonic alone should give us enough credit to be decent drafters. Really, what pick in the Snow era can you hold against the Islanders? Even if you want to argue that Bailey wasn’t the right pick who below him was better? Most of the guys drafted after him haven’t even tasted the NHL yet. BPT is still thin on depth but we got some good prospects in the wings. Nino is a sure thing NHLer. DeHaan, Donovan, Lee & Nelson I would list as likely (figure 3 out of 4 at least) to play at least 5 seasons. Cizikas, Rhett, Ullstrom, Gregoire, Kabanov, Petrov & Mikko I would say are fifty fifty (3 or 4) to be true NHLers. A guy or 2 may come out of nowhere also (a la AMac). That’s a lot of talent in 3 draft classes with many upside surprises coming from the later rounds.

You mean to tell me shooting the puck from 70 feet out doesn't earn us extra goals?

I agree with some of these, disagree with others

But this juxtaposition made me chuckle:

10. Bruno Gervais on the ice… …We all see the same thing. Awful awful awful.

9. The negativity of Islanders fans…has gotten old

I think it’s a good illustration of the different overlapping perspectives we’re all coming from. A Venn diagram of all our overlapping opinions, agreements and disagreements would be as messy as a fresh victim of Islander Face.

Wait

How is the #1 answer NOT injuries? Injuries pretty much completely ruined this season.

by Fabtraption on Feb 24, 2011 3:33 PM EST reply actions   2 recs

Ahhh, yes. Our injury bug should no doubt be the #1 problem. If it wasn't for injuries, this season could have been beautiful.

Just imagine:
A healthy starting lineup of:
Moulson/Tavares/PAP
Grabner/Nielsen/Okposo
Comeau/Bailey/Hunter-Schremp-
Martin/Konopka/Hunter-Schremp-vaJJ-Colliton-Haley
Gillies-Colliton

Streit/Wiz
A-mac/Hamonic
Jurcina/Eaton
Hillen-Gervais-Mottau for depth

Rollie-Starting
DP-Backing up

That team makes the playoffs under Capuano, maybe even under gordon.

Some thoughts...

10. I think Gervais has played well considering the blue line this season. He’s finally not being called upon to play top minutes and since Gordon’s system has been purged, he seems to play a little smarter. That said, I do not want to see him return. I don’t trust he adequate play. Note, I said “adequate.”

9. This complaint is dead-on. I left two Isles message boards because I got tired of their nonsense negativity.

7. Agreed.

6. Don’t forget the Montoya trade (so far).

4. Things take time, so I agree. There are 28 other teams if for those who are tired of the seemingly perpetual rebuild.

3. If Comeau scores 20, then I think I would argue we need to bring him back, but your assessment is spot on.

2. Bourne is an interesting writer with some good stores. The former PR guy also has interesting stories, but overvalues his opinion on the sport and the team. Zenon is being shopped around? Really? Because management is unhappy with him? Citation? Didn’t think so. I get “feelings” as well.

Good complaints.

Hunter said he was just finishing his check.

I honestly really like Comeau in a 3rd line job.

-He adds a solid goalscoring punch, even with him being streaky. His shot when it’s on is great.
-He does have decent size at 6’1’’ 210~, and we are still a smallish team.
-He does bring a good overall game to the 3rd line. He’s a good skater, he has some good physicality when he uses it, and is solid defensively.
-I think we have finally found out what to do with Comeau. Throw him in a 3rd line role and he will be fine with a guy that can create shots for him.

on streakiness...

that is common with mostly all goal scorers. If Grabs doesn’t score soon, he’ll be hearing the same criticism. I would like to see similar studies as was done with Comeau with all our scorers. MMo, JT, Grabs, KO. Even Bailey. How many of their total goals were scored in consecutive games, etc? I’ll bet we’ll see similar patterns.

by CanadianIsleslifer on Mar 3, 2011 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. Most goalscorers are streaky, but comeau's is more a bit mind boggling.

It’s usual for most 20+ goalscorer’s to go on a 5-10game goalless streak every now and then, but comeau has gone on some giant goalless streaks for what looks to be a 20goal/yr scorer the past 2 years: 0goals in 20gms this year and 2goals in 21gms last year. If Comeau showed a little more consistency, he could easily be a solid 25goals/yr scorer in the nhl. His potential is nice, but his consistency is weird. But even with his consistency “issues”, he seems like he’d be a great 3rd liner.

The guy can skate, pass, has size, and is going to score 20 – end of arguement, better than any #2 pik in my opinion. Snow will not let him go anywhere.

Lack of progress on a new Building

Its been often written that if there was a plan in place or even on the drawing board to keep the team locally it would influence: the play of the team; attendance; getting players to come here; and respect thru out the league. Bklyn is not happening and the Mets [the Wilpons ] turns out could use Wang’s help financially and not the other way around. The Lighthouse seems to be burned out and the clock is running. Alot of fans think we will have a Cup contender just about when the lease is out. The LI economy could sure use a project but ironically its the same lousy economy which makes it difficult. Any ideas?

by altosax on Mar 3, 2011 5:56 PM EST reply actions

with 20 mil TV contract..

Isles are not going anywhere. When you look at Winnipeg and Quebec City (which were listed by players every single year as worst place to play), these cities did not have a problem filling seats with warm butts. The problem was they could not generate a decent TV contract, b/c they are both small cities with very little surrounding population. That meant ticket sales made up the lion’s share and then some of their total revenue. That isn’t the case with Isles. If fans will support rebuild, this team will be very good in few years. Even at 16,000, a good team will fill building, that with TV contract will keep Isles right where they are. There are too many teams in far worse shape then Isles. Atlanta, the Coyotes to name a few.

by CanadianIsleslifer on Mar 5, 2011 9:48 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed. Lots of franchises overall worse off then us. Thrashers, Coyotes, Predators, maybe a couple more. I wouldn't worry.

NVMC

The league will not allow this team to continue playing in this building indefinitely and have said so. So besides a team rebuild we need at a minimum a NVMC rebuild and where is the money coming from?

by altosax on Mar 6, 2011 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well, if I remember correctly, a lot of the startup or costs money for a new stadium or "LHP" would come a lot out of Wang's pocket. He just needs to pick the correct place to make it and have that town pass legislation for it and we are good to go.

Problem is, all that still needs to be done. It’s honestly a simple procedure on paper, but carried out when it has to be designed and passed to legislation for a yay or nay.

400 to 500 million.....

they used to say doesn’t grow on trees and now they say doesn’t come out of a whole in the wall unless you have it in the bank. and have a pin. Yea CW could raise it [ I doubt that he has it in ready cash ] but yea he’s got credit – but even with a full house every night and the concerts and the circus etc,, and naming rights, and a great cable contract does it barely add up. What is needed are big tax breaks from the town and county and right now they are broke and won’t give away anything.

Just a footnote, but when I first read this, I was really surprised how you couldn't fit dylan reese into your top 10. Realllllllllllly surprised. lol

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
