Colin Campbell has been consistently inconsistent in adjudicating league wide infractions. The most recent $100K fine to the Islanders for not controlling their players, while the Penguins received no fine when they had a player leave the bench is a prime example of the leagues unjust system of justice.

the current stance is the Colin has the unenviable and thankless task of doling out discipline, because he can’t please both sides all the time… the fact of the matter is that he please no sides more oft than either side – both sides is just right out… we need a clearer guideline to expect more consistent rulings in the matter

Ethics dictate that when there is an apparent conflict of interest then a conflict of interests exists. Being the disciplinary authority over a family member gives the league a sense of impropriety and therefore should not be allowed. Although Mr. Campbell may well be acting in the best interest of the league, this conflict of interest puts the league in a compromising position that is unbecoming of a major professional sport.

Colin should be fired for numerous reasons. Inconsistency for suspensions, no suspensions for obvious head and suspension worthy hits, and his e-mails which show him as far from neutral with the league that were brought to the public a little while back. But the 2 main things of why he should be gone:

1-The savard concussion hit by cooke, which will likely end savard’s superstar career not being penalized at all. Completely rediculous and joke worthy, given how a guy can end a player’s career with an illegal hit to the head(what the league is trying to stop), not get any suspension for the hit and still play in the nhl today.
2-Matt Cooke is still in the nhl. He has thrown at least 20 intent to injure 4gm+ suspension worthy hits in his career. How is such a player allowed to still be in the nhl? Don Cherry ripped him a new one for his antics, and the league still doesn’t notice. A suspension here and there doesn’t do it. This guys player-threatening antics haven’t changed, and he needs to be banished from the nhl forever. He is the laughing stock of the league, and the #1 example why the NHL’s policy on cleaning up the league and stopping illegal hits isn’t working.

I’ll post a fanshot in some other hockey boards to get some attention for this.

With every passing NHL On The Fly Ice Pix, it’s becoming more and more clear how little ‘under control’ Campbell has over the league. If he keeps allowing blindsides, Cooke missiles, and Campbell elbowpad incisions, if he keeps not fining the “important” teams like the Pens, if he keeps punishing the effects while ignoring the causes, the ‘net effect’ (get it…GET IT?) will be a steady rise of self-poilicing not seen since the 70’s.

Oh, and Campbell’s a gutless puke.

1- If Campbell truly wanted to help alleviate the problem with headshots and concussions, he would have done this several years ago when studies were already coming out.

2- He continued to allow the instigator penalty to be in effect, which heavily contributes to the fighting issue as more teams are having to police themselves, continued to allow “certain teams” have free reign, and has been very inconsistent in ensuring proper punishment being issued.

1. A few years back Chris Pronger, of the Ducks, and Chris Simon, of the Isles, both did the same, disgraceful, act of kicking an opponent with a sharp bladed skate which could literally KILL someone…Simon got a deserved 30 games and had to miss the playoffs but Pronger received 9 games, just in time to return for a Stanley Cup run… Consequently the Isles did the right thing and fired Simon and Pronger went on to win a Stanley Cup…This is UNACCEPTABLE!

2. I’ve watched almost every Isles game this year and it seems that in almost every game an Islander player gets hit or cheap shotted but some how the refs seem to ignore these reprehensible actions, leaving Isles fans collective jaws to drop…If Campbell didn’t create a climate of favoritism the NY Isles wouldn’t have had to police themselves during the game against the Pens on Feb 1st, 2011…If the league treated the actions with fairness the Isles players wouldn’t have felt the need to take things into their own hands…This brawl was a consequence of Campbell’s well known bias…

2. Staal from the Pens was suspended for a sucker punch that knocked a player out and his was rescinded but Matt martin, of the Isles, who gave, Talbot of the Pens, a sucker punch got a deserved 4 games…Where is the consistency???

Because Colin Campbell, flat out, doesn’t get it. Which is easy to do when having to enforce rules that could or could not be in favor of his son or the NHL team he plays for.

Hard to pick just one reason but I’d have to go with the fact that Matt Cooke got off scott free for his hit on Marc Savard. He will never be the same player and his career may well be over. Enacting a ruling on head-shots after this hit does not justify a suspension free Cooke.

The only solution to this problem is to create a panel of judges who have no affiliation with any team pass judgement on all offenses, and that they be consistent.

Probably should be a panel made up of a variety of different experiences

Referees, coaches, players, trainers/medical personnel so that comprehensive perspectives can be considered when determining the level of appropriateness/inappropriateness of players actions and the consequences of these actions to all others involved in the game.

Colin Campbell needs to go, as the players don’t feel he meets out consistent, accurate justice – this is the most dangerous thing of all for the health of players, as they too often believe they need to take revenge themselves.

This is on Campbell – he should go at once and be replaced by someone who can be trusted to be consistent by the players

by Cary K on Feb 15, 2011 11:29 PM EST reply actions

Sal Robertson, Elkridge, MD (Capitals)

Colin Campbell’s discipline is truly baffling. Players receive inconsistent penalties, fines, and suspensions for similar infractions. Campbell should be replaced by a panel that reviews all questionable hits, called on the ice or not.

If the hit is called on the ice, it is automatically reviewed by the panel. Apart from that:

1. The team who was fouled can call for a review.
2. The video review team in Ottawa can call for a review.
3. All review results should be made public with all the video angles shown.
4. The panel should be made up of retired players and referees.

The league needs consistency. The lack of it is maddening.

Campbell should be removed because

-He polices the league with an obvious bias, turning new fans off of the game because they are confused by the inconsistent rules
-He portrays the referees as infallible though they clearly are not, increasing frustration between the players and the zebras who are not held accountable for their mistakes
-He doesn’t realize that because a hit resulted in an injury, it wasn’t necessarily a dirty hit
-He also doesn’t realize that because a hit didn’t result in an injury, it wasn’t necessarily a clean hit

Campbell should be fired simply because his rules are so inconsistent. Hits to the head are dangerous and can end careers and should not be allowed in the game but everyone should punished the same way. Matt Cooke has had enough hits to be suspended half a season while earlier in the season Matt Martin received a two game suspension for a first time offense. He has no consistency in his punishment and should be held accountable for it.

Constantly building for the future.

Simply put he’s inconsistent and he doesn’t hold all players accountable for the actions they commit. He’s either too easy on repeat offenders or a gauntlet dropper on first timers. Disciplinary sentences shouldn’t be a one man show rather a professional panel who work together to get the punishments correct

Campbell’s inconsistent punishments send mixed messages to players and fans by explicitly treating superstars different than others. The punishment system fails to set adequate boundaries on what is or should be an acceptable level of violence in the NHL. Because of his inability (or unwillingness) to treat incidents on a fair and objective level, more players are at risk for injury.

There needs to be a clear and concise system for leveling fines and/or suspensions. As of now it seems like Mr. Campbell is either throwing at a dartboard to figure them out or he is blindly reaching into a bag to choose days. It does not make sense that someone who was never involved in judging a play and doling out punishment, like a referee, can be the final arbiter of justice for the league.

There is a serious conflict of interest in the current system, as Mr. Campbell’s own son plays in the NHL. More importantly, there has been a terrible inconsistency in the suspensions handed out for similar – and at times identical – infractions.

Other than the obvious conflict of interest with his son playing in the NHL I think everyone can point to the fact that there is absolutely no consistency in his suspensions. This fact is one solid reason as to why the league struggles to gain headway amongst the other sports.

Colin Campbell should be relieved of his duties due to his undeniable and vast incompetence in performing his job. His decisions are highly inconsistent and often appear to be biased based on the player or team in question. His inability to effectively perform his job is a black eye for the NHL and there is no shortage of media who consistently, and rightly, call for his removal.

by Original Rob on Feb 17, 2011 2:34 PM EST reply actions

Chris U., Lake Grove, NY (NY Islanders)

Rather than go into specific instances, which are too numerous to list, I’ll just say that Colin Campbell’s wide disparity when it comes to the punishment meted out for similar incidents is AT BEST inconsistent and demonstrates a lack of competance. At worst it carries an obvious bias and favoritism towards certain teams and players. Whatever the reason for that favoritism, it is unacceptable and Campbell must step down or be removed.

This is not 'Nam, Smokey. This is hockey. There are rules.

Campbell needs to go because 1: He disciplines based on outcomes, not the act itself. 2: Favoritism toward stars on certain teams. Ex: Carcillo starts a fight at the end of a playoff game, gets suspended. Malkin does the same thing….nothing! 3. He is consistently inconsistent. Same acts receive different punishments via The Wheel of (In)Justice.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
