Complete Coverage >

Tim Wallace has been reclassified from emergency callup to genuine, waiver-danger regular ol' callup. Not bad for 9:37 of work. Micheal Haley is scratched, Al Montoya starts and Michael Grabner is back faster than I can finish this sentence.

Ten years ago the Islanders made the playoffs for the first time in a long time, in what would be four playoff appearances in five seasons. The Hawks also made the playoffs but it was their only appearance in an 11-year stretch.

Everybody hurts. Sometimes.

Today's already been full of win around here

We’ve had a mature discussion about hockey toughness, a trip down Long Island teenager memory lane and a Bill Stewart reference. The game is basically gravy.

That being said, let’s keep this thing going, boys.

There is just no excuse for missing the net that often

If you have a dangerous shot, great. If you’re shot is not dangerous unless you homerun swing so hard that you miss the net half the time, not so great.

that's what I mean

some of you are just too young

I remember a great Islanders – Blackhawks 3-3 Tie at the Colly – very satusfying game

as this one would have been if it ended 2-2 after Regulation

but no, this is the age of instant gratification

I agree....

I remember those days fondly

I was a bigger fan of the Isles 9 something Thrashing of the Hawks during a blizzard in 2003 or 04 or something.

ah

when the Hawks were still owned by Old Man Wirtz

they really sucked for a long time

11 years!

It was so enjoyable, even I forget they were so bad for so long.

It also didn't help that JT was

at the end of a very long shift. Fresh legs would have helped somewhere in there.

by Homey Chives on Dec 8, 2011 9:30 PM EST reply actions

I Said the exact same thing when I saw that.

JT really should have changed, he should not have been out there. IMO he is technically at fault there, but its really tough to say “at fault” when it comes to JT.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Points are good

Comebacks are good. Taking good teams to OT is good even if you lose.

Defenseman fall down is not good.

What matters most is the NY Islanders are playing like a team with purpose…

could have gotten 13th place

But TB’s Dominic Moore just schooled the Rags and Lundvist to tie the game late.

I'm fine with that.

we are tied pending the TB/NYR SO result since Isles got the points in less games, but water under the bridge in about 90 seconds.

Chicago is still one of the best teams in the league

Even though their goaltending is supect, but that’s two straight games we’ve stayed with them.

in theory

their D isn’t that good – they are similar to the Rangers

we really are very close to being very good

by Cary K on Dec 8, 2011 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

not at all

there isnt very much depth to the league this year – after Boston, Pittsburgh & maybe San Jose – you jump right to geams like Vancouver, Rangers, Chicago – who we are competitive with when we play them

we really aren’t far away

that admittedly is more of a statement of the relative depth of the NHL than anything

by Cary K on Dec 8, 2011 9:45 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I just dont think the Hawks are similar to the Rags are they?

Do the Rags have the weapons the Hawks have on offense??

by KO21 on Dec 9, 2011 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

We are playing much much better than we were.

Eh you cant win them all

We played well again against a very good hockey team

This is clearly a better team than last years; we are in every game lately. Now we just have to learn to win in OT lol

This.

People say the NHL should contract, but I argue it’s the NBA that has to cut back on their teams. By a big number, too. That is, so long as they allow the best players to cluster around one or two teams. I never watch ANY basketball. Hate the sport. But I typically can correctly guess the four semifinalists before the season begins.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
