Injury Updates: Islanders Recall Poulin, Wallace; MacDonald Joins Pandolfo on IR; Grabner day to day

Surfing's not a sport, it's a way of life - you know, a hobby. It's a way of looking at that wave and saying, "Hey bud, let's party!"

Well then. The troops have come home from the road excited by victories but hitting the medical tent in droves.

You knew Andrew MacDonald -- who missed both weekend games -- was banged up (leg), but now the New York Islanders have placed him on Injured Reserve with an estimate of missing two to four weeks.

Jay Pandolfo (broken foot) also officially hit IR (retroactively), and though Rick DiPietro (groin) is out with no timetable and Michael Grabner (groin) is day to day, you might expect one of those open roster slots to be taken soon by Evgeni Nabokov, who skated with the team this morning.

That means there's plenty of room for roster-gazing and armchair Bridgeport recalls in the near term, and those are already in the works. [UPDATE: It's Kevin Poulin and Tim Wallace on the way up.]

Star-divide

Down on the farm, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers do not play again until Saturday at home, so that leaves at minimum two mid-week games for the Islanders to go depth diving. Even with Nino Niederreiter (concussion) not on IR yet, the Islanders have at least one extra non-goalie spot they can fill on the 23-man roster. (Mark Fistric has a hearing for his hit on Nino, but he says he's innocent.)

Newsday's Arthur Staple just tweeted that Kevin Poulin will be recalled on emergency basis. He also predicts that forward slot will be taken either by Justin DiBenedetto or Tim Where Wallace At on emergency basis. [See official update above.]

In happier news, Matt Moulson was named NHL First Star of the Week. Four goals in one game, and seven in four, will do that. (Feel free to pump the SB Nation NY Player of the Week poll here, too.)

AMac

AMac took a shot to the leg. He didn’t break anything, right? Is it a deep bruise that is going to keep him out 2-4 weeks? Or did it hit his knee and mess something up there?

2-4 (or 3-5 weeks) sounds like a strange amount of time to miss because of a blocked shot. (Usually it is either less or more, isn’t it?)

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Dec 5, 2011 4:46 PM EST reply actions

Was thinking the same

Technically for IR purposes it only needs to be a week, so if it’s a bad bruise they’re covered there even if it’s not 2-4 weeks. Don’t know if they want some extra hip rest while they’re at it or what.

Hard to see how a blocked shot could sprain something

A bone bruise could really hamper a person’s skating. Could even be a small fracture they’re worried about.

As much as that Linename would Rakh...

Rhett has probably gone to the back of the line call-up wise. There’s no doubt he deserves a shot, but he’s had two chances to win a roster spot and he’s come up lame twice. Him and Katic have seen there chances come and go, and now it’s time for Ullstrom and Wallace to possibly show some spark.
eventually I think Rhett could re-surface as a fourth line RW platoon with Haley. Rhett, IMHO, gives them a little Jason Blake type energy on the bottom six to create offense through the forecheck.

I love the Stars coaches quote here:

“Sometimes when you hit, you’re momentum is moving upward, that’s how you hit. Whatever sport you’re in, you bend your knees and you drive your legs. He got off the ground, so it will be up to the league to decide.’’

Yeah, throwing you’re momentum “up” instead of diagonally ultimately leads you to “leaving your feet” and “high hits”. It’s common sense. Are nhl players stupid? I don’t think so. If Fistric just threw his weight diagonally and not “up”, like a player intending to injure would, “not saying harming was intentional”, there would be no talk of an illegal hit since his arms look down imo. Arms down and no jumping=no head contact, arms down and leaving the feet/exploding-upward=head contact. That simple.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

You gotta play the war of words, like Bylsma does. Cap should be outraged even if he isn’t outraged.

by rmblifn on Dec 5, 2011 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

I actually don't think Fistric was being all smart-and-clever exploding upward

I just think NHL players who cultivate physical reputations to stay in the league tend to take shortcuts to maintain that reputation. (And yes, I think many of them are patently stupid.)

People seem to believe hitting is a “right” just for being out on the ice. I believe it’s a responsibility, and the burden is on the checker to either do it right or not take the risk. Players who make their living “playing on the edge” have determined that not taking the risk could end in not having a job anymore, so they take the risk, take the suspensions, and take the reputation (good and bad) that comes with it.

And the worst(for a small time frame), has occurred to our defense. One of our top 3 is out for a month.

Not to beat a dead horse, but if Garth acquires a “good/decent” top 4 d-man to eat 19-20min/gm reliably, we wouldn’t be in this situation. (Staios has held up decently, but still way too many stupid penalites + stupid mistakes + Streit hiding some of his weaknesses has been livable. I’d call Staios right now a good bottom pair guy, but that’s it). This is gonna get interesting.

Pens just lost Letang and Michalik to concussions

And I am sure they will survive.

D men get injured. The GM’s job is to make sure there is enough depth so that injuries don’t completely expose the team. Our GM, sadly, has not done so, despite a season that screamed that our injury to our D was a particularly big risk.

I would say that we are in a worse position to endure injuries this year as compared to last year (when we had Katic, Hillen and Martinek in mix).

Our GM, sadly, has not done so, despite a season that screamed that our injury to our D was a particularly big risk.

I generally don’t like to give Garth a hard time for signing stuff because he’s in a tough spot with a small market team and what seems to be a shoestring budget even by those standards, but the Hillen thing bugged me then and it still bugs me. I know they thought they’d have Katic, but that’s still not an excuse to me. Mottau could have been doing AHL time all season if we still had Hillen, and this might have been the first we’d seen of him all year.

I guess the only downside to that is we never would have seen the Snow Angel of Despair.

Don't make me bring out the Silky.

by afrosupreme on Dec 5, 2011 6:43 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

You'll find most teams suffer more injuries at D

It’s just a high-risk position, so going through 10-12 bodies in a year is more common than you might think.

The trick is acquiring depth, and of course with waiver needs that makes it even trickier because outside of emergency recalls you either need guys who are young and good (waiver exempt) or guys who are old and … not good (i.e. no one claims them on waivers).

What the Heck is the Difference Between a Conference and a Division?

Bettman wants four “conferences,” not “divisions.” Then what are the East and West groups that meet for the Cup? Stupid.

Here’s a novel idea. Call the four "conferences Patrick, Norris, Smythe and Adams, and call the two groupings Wales and Campbell.

by rmblifn on Dec 5, 2011 9:35 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Then what are the East and West groups that meet for the Cup?

Apparently it won’t work like that. The top four teams from each conference will play within the conference for the first two rounds of the playoffs (the way it used to work with the divisions).

Then the remaining four teams will be reseeded for the final two rounds. So basically you could have a scenario where (pending the realignment), Boston played the Isles for the Cup.

How hard would it be to hand out the top four seeds to the division winners and then go 5-16 across the rest of the league? I for one would welcome back the days when you could open cross-country and then spend the later rounds infighting with your divisional rivals. I think that would be the best of both formats.

by TheMetalChick on Dec 6, 2011 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Seems like that has indeed happened

From nhl.com:

The NHL’s Board of Governors on Monday approved a radical realignment plan, according to multiple reports. The plan reportedly eliminates the current two-conference, six-division setup in favor of a configuration that features four conferences based on geography. Two conferences will have eight teams and the other two conferences will have seven teams, according to the report.

I don’t know why they are using the word conference, instead of two conferences/four divisions, but whatever.

I don’t love the intraconference first two rounds of the playoffs, but who knows how long that will last.

Don't make me bring out the Silky.

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
