Post-Game Plus/Minus - Islanders 5, Stars 4: Matt Moulson is a Beast, Al Montoya a Closer

Mark Fistric took one of those gratuitous leaping liberties at a rookie, knocking Nino Niederreiter in the head (and out of the game on his first shift, concussion-like symptoms) ... and received nothing more than a roughing penalty. Matt Martin jumped in and took the extra two via double-minor. That set the tone for what ended up being a wild back-and-forth (from a 3-0 Isles lead to 3-3 and 5-4 before the second intermission -- with Matt Moulson picking up four on his own. Repeat: Matt Moulson scored four goals.

This is your spot for immediate post-game analysis, sharing your more sober pluses and minuses for the night. (Drunken rants are generally reserved for the game thread.) I have a few pluses: Matt Moulson, Matt Moulson, Matt Moulson and Matt Moulson. Also: John Tavares.

Rick DiPietro left after two periods with a groin injury and gets credit with the win, but Al Montoya gets the save. Michael Grabner also left the game in the third with a groin injury. Highlights and review of the leaping hit on Nino after the jump.

(Also: If you're not aware, those "SBN" links go to the SB Nation page for each individual game, so go to that page and you'll find all posts/FanShots/etc. associated with a particular game (assuming the author tagged it properly with the right event). When you're writing a FanPost or posting a FanShot that relates to a particular game or set of games, go ahead and tag those through the "attach event" mode.)

*actually, nope. It was against an Islander during an anonymous game between two teams that don't draw well.

As disappointed as I was ...

in last night’s result I’m equally thrilled about this one.
That was a ballsy, gutty effort by the whole team.
If they play that hard every night and somehow manage to get scoring from secondary guys even a little bit, they’ll win a bunch of games.

Now let’s see if Brendan Shanahan does his job on that gangster attack.
I haven’t seen a good replay, maybe someone has, but it looked like the SOB not only left his feet but nailed him with an elbow to the head but good.
Is that what I saw?

by dose on Dec 3, 2011 11:10 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Don't be so positive.

;)

Every view I’ve seen — and I try to be really conservative on these because I know fan emotion runs high — was a leaping hit with contact via elbow. He may not have set out to elbow him, but he MF-ing left his feet and elbowed him. (Video is above.) Don’t know how else to read it.

Either one of those ...

by Strong Island Thuggery on Dec 3, 2011 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

You know, it’s amazing the extent to which some fans refuse to acknowledge reality. Fistric clearly left his feet and targeted Nino’s head with an elbow. End of story. It was a garbage hit worthy of 5 games. And if an Islander did the same thing, I’d be saying the same thing.

I agree with you. Islanders fans (and their writers) would just not defend something like that.

Only thing I'd say in their defense

Even Butch Goring calls it a “big-time check” during the live view, but then after he sees the replay he realizes how leap-and-elbow it was.

Personally, when I saw it live I was immediately suspecting a jumping head hit, but I get how during game play it looked like a routine check along the boards that went wrong. Now let’s see how Shanny’s video room views it.

Butch played...

by neologizer on Dec 3, 2011 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know

If I’m Nino I expect to get checked here — you just received an in-tight pass along the boards with the D-man watching. But an elevating elbow to the head? I’m thinking that’s what they’re trying to clean out.

Long before Shanaban came along, I was whining how it used to be you could throw a check with your shoulder or hip — none of this exploding upward stuff to take out people’s brains. What kills me is this was a perfect opportunity for a classic hip check, yest Firstric fistf#$s him in the head.

by rmblifn on Dec 3, 2011 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

Agree on Stevens

So revered, yet such a headhunter.

Honestly — and Stevens was a Blue, so once cheered him — what got me about him was how much he used his teammate as a screen/pick to catch a guy unawares, to basically gang up on him 2-on-1. His hits on Kozlov, even Lindros, he nearly takes out his own D partner in the process.

But even Stevens mostly stayed level and shoulder. Guys like Fistric jump upward.

I didn't think much of it at first either...

I thought it was a big hit… but on the replay it clearly shows fishstrick left his feet… and basically targeted Nino’s head. That is gonna get games.
I understand the refs missing the call… But I’m a little ticked at the isles coming out of it with the extra two minutes… and the shannahammer needs to hit Fristic on the head.

Hell, Nino’s hit on the pocket locket in Buffalo was a leaving the feet thing.

Back sort of on topic

+ Matt Martin, for recognizing instantly what the refs did not, and honestly not doing enough to deserve the extra minor. This is what sucks about the NHL’s love/hate relationship with instigating and enforcing: You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. For an extra minor, he could’ve killed that guy.
+ PAP. You complete me. Or that line, anyway.
+ JT. For keep on keeping on, goal drought or not. He just makes things happen.
+ Moulson x 4. But that snipe on the second goal is why he works on that line. You need someone who can finish quickly from there.
+ Cappy. Every time the Isles took a body blow, he threw Line 1 out there and they often delivered.
+ Streit, for lobbying the ref after the Fist-f#$% hit ,,. while remaining neutral, I’m sure.
+ Montoya. Played last night? No problem. Cold? No problem. DP? Problem.
+ Hamonic. For having to play with everyone, and for drawing Ott and the refs into the make up call for the Martin injustice. Ott is such a tool, it’s always great to see him costing his team.

= Reese. Nice goal but come on, buddy. Remember what we talked about with the whole defense in front of the net?
- DP. I know you care. I know you try. It’s cruel, this fate. But still.
- Grabner’s first groin blowout. Does anyone wonder/fear how long Grabner speed will look like Grabner speed?
+ Souray. LOL, I feel so good we didn’t sign you.
- Mottau. So, back to minus-3 then.

Hurray for being at the game

+ Moulson (very nearly had the natural hatty in the 1st, just missing a potential chip in from the side)
+ DP’s 1st period (Some nice saves, did well to avoid mistakes and play relatively conservatively)
+++++ The size of the steak DP is buying Moulson in the Stockyards tonight
+ For the whole 1st line. JT/PAP/MM ran around all night and were consistently dangerous, especially that 3rd goal coming right after the Stars had tied it up
+ Montoya comes in and delivers
+ Martin jumping Fistric right after the hit. Dallas wanted to play chippy and the Islanders came right back at ’em. Great way to set the tone for the night

- DP’s 2nd period. The kicker was when he tried to play the puck behind the net and just lost his stick
- Stars fans showing up to the game. Limited ticket availability meant I had to pay more than full price to sit in the nosebleeds. And then nobody showed up anyway…

But then for actual butts in seats? Not so great. The Stars’ insistence on variable pricing probably doesn’t help too much. Raining on and off all day today, plus some big college football on (Texans love their football), maybe changed the number of bodies some, but lots of empty seats

Limited ticket availability?

Limited to what? The 16,000 empty seats it looked like they had there. It reminded me of an Islanders-Oilers game around 99-2000 that I went to. They announced 5,000 and my few sectionmates and I wondered if they counted everyone twice.

It's been scary this year

Luxury/variable pricing in the lower bowl really mucks with things when a team isn’t doing well. I can’t remember even Atlanta looking as bad on TV as Dallas has with that empty lower bowl. I guess Phoenix has looked worse.

I really hope people come back with the new owner. It’s not like their baseball team is getting it done, mwahahaha (gratuitous Cardinals joke).

I know why people don't show up to Islanders game

All too well, I’m afraid. But hasn’t it only been 2-3 bad seasons for the Stars, if even that many? It certainly hasn’t reached even Thrashers levels of chronic ineptitude. The Coyotes thing is sad because Tippett is ridiculous and has them playing great game-in game-out. I guess no one wants to commit if they’re gonna bolt soon.

It's true, they've had it much better

To me this is also testament to non-traditional/young markets and why you have to be in it for decadeS, rather than just a decade, and why the NHL has been short-sighted in choosing/approving owners in many of those markets.

When the Isles light some sparks after years of being fallow, you see fans come out of the woodwork who saw Westfall, and Gillies and Potvin and LaFontaine and Turgeon — or people whose fathers did. When the Stars bring back fans who Remember When, they are people who did not have a team in Dallas when Turgeon was an Islander (alright, he was just barely, but you know what I mean).

mostly sober, second period

I like Dyan Reese, but he has brain farts.

DP is a brain fart. But I hope he heals quick.

I’m dizzy. 3-3?

Eric Nystrom can score as many goals against the Isles he wants, sibling as we win the game.

4-3? The mustache stays until the playoff beard.

DP got shot by the same phantom bullet that took out Poulin last year. He’s walking sidestep on his skates, not skating.

Those guys banging on the glass are really irritating.

Nice to hear a Souray mistake leads directly to a Moulson goal.

Howie and Butchie were wrong about when DiPietro hurt himself.

It was a play before the one they kept showing- my friends and I watched the game (on delay) and we saw it, even rewound it, and wondered if he was gonna look bad after that. He did- and then after that came the time that they showed on MSG as well as the “hot potato” goalie stick incident.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

You're right

I saw that play – it didn’t look like he was going to get back up (more so than usual)

Plus: the top line looking like a legit top line. Wow.
Plus: The Isles smartly taking Rick out (or Rick asking to come out) once they realized he didnt even have the so-so side to side movement he usually has. Montoya can handle it- and…
Plus: He did. :)
Plus and Minus: Matt Martin being reserved and controlled in standing up for Nino, but still being punished as if he beat the everloving shit out of the guy. Plus for the standing up part. Martins a great kid.
Plus: Kyle is still playing hard, thank goodness.
Minus: No penalty on that leaping headshot on poor Nino.
Plus: The team mentality after that hit happened (AND the ISles not only didnt get the PP but were punished by the idiot refs)- the Isles exacted the best revenge possible- scoring multiple goals.
Plus: Team resiliency and determination. Hunger. I love seeing it. LOVE IT.
Plus: Reese scoring a very nice goal. No he wasnt great tonight but I actually see promise in him.
Plus: I love Travis Hamonic.
Minus: Grabner hurting his groin could be bad-bad, since his game is based on speed. Heres hoping its minor.
Minus: Rick looked alright to start, made some good saves, and only let up one goal- until that first weird leg stretch thing he did when he winced and was slow to get up. Like I said previously, it actually happened before the play that they pointed to during the broadcast. Poor Rick… I feel bad for the guy as a human being, a good-hearted human being who genuinely loves this team, but goalies simply cannot be this fragile and still keep their jobs. People who clamor for buyouts and go on about 9 years left need to relax… as sad as it is for him, reality is that the time remaining in Ricks NHL career is closer to nine months than it is to nine years. Theres no reason to hate the guy for it- because in reality, the Isles organization (wisely IMO) gave up depending on him to be a starter a long time ago.
Plus: Isles win. Again. In regulation. Heres to a genuinely kick-ass road trip. This team is doing some good things lately, and I am grateful to see it. Lets just hope that the Isles injured players are all healthy soon.

You guys mostly covered it

A Big Minus – - Any ‘fan’ here who was happy/cheered/commented about Ricky not coming back being a good thing. I know I’m a Ricky apologist, but that is classless and something I would expect elsewhere, not here. I know the heat of the moment stuff, and I can kind of respect that, but, in my opinion, it’s not cool to wish/cheer injury on any player, especially one on your own favorite team.

Sorry, felt it needed to be said.

I don't wish injuries

But Rick looked to be playing half-injured before that, and he is not good enough to play well half-injured. (It took him forever to get up each time he found himself lying on the ice.)

Running Total and Defensemen Grades

Kyle 3, Post 2.

Streit: A-. One of his best. Very good throughout.
2.962 (24 games played)

Staios: C+. Good
2.267 (24)

Hamonic: A. Perhaps the best game any defenseman has played this season for the Isles. His 3rd period is certainly in the running for best period by an Isles defenseman. He didn’t just clear the zone time after time; he helped the Isles maintain possession as they cleared the zone. (Hamonic was a big reason this game didn’t turn into one of those where the Isles are scrambling in their zone for the last 10 minutes.)
3.177 (24)

Jurcina: B-. Through two periods he was playing at the decent level which we have come to expect from Jurcina this season. In the 3rd period, he neutralized Benn with solid body checks 2 or 3 times along the boards. He was another big reason Isles maintained the lead in the 3rd.
2.120 (15)

Mottau: C-. Sizable mistakes in the 1st and 2nd periods. Not awful overall, though.
1.886 (17)

Reese: C. I was going back-and-forth between ‘C’ or ‘C+’. If you have the game on DVR, take a look at the defensive sequence around 17:45 left in the 2nd period. What is great about that sequence is that he maintains body position on his man while he tries to clear the zone— and eventually does. At that point, I thought he was headed to a ‘B’ range game. Then he scored the goal. And then he made two big mistakes: a turnover (I believe) and bad man-marking in front of the goal. (This all in the 2nd period.) He did reasonably well in the 3rd. All-in-all a pretty good game, but perhaps the two worst mistakes by defensemen this game.
2.350 (2)

Not in action:

Eaton:
2.131 (16)

AMac: B.
2.694 (22)

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
