I forgot to make this point in the Hicks-bashing preview, but attendance in Dallas this year has been bad -- like sub-Coliseum bad.

No pressure, guys. If you miss this putt ... we lose.

DP is in net...So we can handicap the Stars 2 goals.

Chances are he will let up the 1st shot in net and a weak goal at the end to take all the wind our sails…It really pains me to think that we have to play this guy because we have too…MC says we aren’t stuck with him but I beg to differ…We are just that…Stuck with a subpar goalie who wouldn’t even be a back up in the minors at this pace…So we are basically putting winning aside for 1 guy because of the money…No other reason for him to be in there…Its not fair to the rest of the team…

Wouldn’t it be nice if our backup was at least an avg goalie? Or even slightly below avg instead of just abysmal? Why don’t they call up Poulin? I know hes not having a great start but at least hes athletic and can make some saves..Poulin has a good chance to get to make that save that will steal a game with his pure athleticism…DP has lost his athleticism and he is a professional ATHLETE. If he cant be an athlete anymore then he has no business being paid do be so and he has no business in a pro hockey teams roster….

sorry for this rant…Il go on and root for him and hopefully he pulls a rabbit out of a hat here…

I think it would still fall under his criterion

Because he talks about the hitter taking responsibility in not throwing the hit, and the fact that Nino flinches before the guy in mid-air lands a shoulder into his head seems negligent since Fistric was already airborne when Nino flinched.

At least, I hope so…

Is it safe to say that JT is more of a playmaker than a finisher?

Moulsons a finisher…It just seems unfair that JT doesnt have 15 goals by now…As long as he keeps up the great work his goals will come…But the assists should pile up if his line mates can finish like they have been lately…Would that be so bad if JT is not the high goal scorer but he scores a ton of pts? I have to admit I was surprised because i thought he was supposed to be a pure goal scorer…hes more of a playmaker thus far in his career…

by Strong Island Thuggery on Dec 3, 2011 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

I really don't think that's true

I just remember a number of years ago when Adrian Aucoin (oh remember those days when the Isles had a good D corps) had the hardest shot in the skills competition by a wide margin and he was using a wood stick. I just really don’t think there’s that much of a difference.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Dec 3, 2011 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

They do

I wrote a paper for a kinesiology (sp?) class on it. I have to make that a story one day…it’s really cool stuff how much is involved in stick selection.

NY Islanders, just one irrational free agent signing away from contention!
Website:Lighthouse HockeyTwitter: @KeithLHHockey

by Keith Quinn on Dec 3, 2011 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

But is the difference that noticable?

I mean there’s a big difference in a couple mph on a slap shot but if the difference is less that 1 – 2 mph faster, that, at least to me, is not enough of a difference to have D-men carrying composites that break often, versus wood that don’t break as often.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Dec 3, 2011 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

I can't use them

For me, I can’t feel the puck (stickhandling) like I do with wood. But the recoil is amazing on those things for any kind of shot. They all have a different “flex” ratio too, so depending on your body weight and how much you bear down on a stick, yeah, the choice of flex impacts your shot a lot. I’m really light, and for a couple of seasons, I was using a 110 flex and my shot was horrible.

Once I switched to like an 88, it was better because I could flex the stick and the recoil was better. The other one was like swinging a 2X4 at the puck…no give, no elevation, no speed.

Website:Lighthouse HockeyTwitter: @KeithLHHockey

by Keith Quinn on Dec 3, 2011 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

fair enough

hopefully you do that article, I would love to learn more about it all. For me, I’ve always used wood. I’ve only tried composite once or twice, but I never really felt any difference in my shot, slap or wrist. So I guess to each his own on that one

by IDCWhoYouLike on Dec 3, 2011 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

There's other stuff too that is really amazing

the loft, the lie, the curve, the toe type…very interesting and you really have to consider all of your tendencies as a player.

NY Islanders, just one irrational free agent signing away from contention!
Website:Lighthouse HockeyTwitter: @KeithLHHockey

by Keith Quinn on Dec 3, 2011 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

It really does make a difference

I hate to say.

What’s weird is my crappier shots are better with the really flex sticks, but my normal shots and stickhandling are worse because I’ve been using stiff sticks (read: cheaper) for so long that I just can’t get used to the wobbly softy feel.

But even I can tell on goalies how the 3% or whatever it is makes a difference on them. It’s more timing than anything. A few less milliseconds to react. Really wonder if it’s worth the number of shattered sticks mid-play though.

I don’t see how garth let’s Suter to go to free agency if he gets him. Definitel extension imo.

Yeah, Nashville needs the Offensive help bad and if Moulson looks like a cheap option for them for 3yrs scroing 25-30goals,

they aren’t gonna be able to pay suter anyway, so I say why not? What do you think?

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Dec 3, 2011 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

See, this I'm not sure of this. It's farily obvious that the Preds are a budget team that would wanna move Suter for offense.

And tehy ae gonna want to win now, not really in the future given the weber/rinne situation(others age too arguably=Fisher/etc). What could be a better return for waht they are looking for other then a 25-30goal scorer who;s signed on the cheap for the nexxt 3yrs? That’s better then a 1st round pick, that’s better then a 1st and a 2nd rounder imo. We are talking trading an UFA=Suter for a 25-30goal guy locked down for ~$3mil/yr for the next 3yrs. That’s a great deal for nashville imo.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Dec 3, 2011 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think so, it;s rare you trade a rental for a 30goal scorer signed on the cheap for 3yrs.

Nashvilee won’t find a better goalscorer to help them on O anywehere in that situation. That deal is really good for them.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Dec 3, 2011 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

The idea is sound

but doesn’t fit with what the Islanders are trying to do. Build from within the system and build a team that can compete for many years. While it might turn them into a playoff team for this year, keep in mind that like the Smyth deal it doesn’t mean anything if Suter doesn’t resign with the Isles. If they could get him during free agency that would fit better than trading away Matt Moulson for what is at this point a rental for the season. Especially at this stage when the season is still young enough that anything can happen. I think with a trade like the one you proposed you can’t count on Suter resigning. Don’t know if this is in the right reply box, but I couldn’t figure out where else to post it lol.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Dec 3, 2011 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

It's all about the extension. If not, we just gambled away Moulson.

I love Moulson, but a gamble needs to be made at some point. Suter is a gamechanger on D, upgrading Staios to Suter would be incredible. Overpaying for Suter would b e worth it. Lsoing moulson wouldn’t kill us because we have a lot of O players, a lot of O in the wings, but defense is the issue. It’s free agency or trade, something nees to be done before next season.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Dec 3, 2011 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

In that case

I would try a package of prospects and/or a draft pick for Suter. An uncertain future for the Islanders (i.e. gamble) should be a gamble for Nashville as well.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Dec 3, 2011 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

I'd be interesting, but they really need O help now.

I don’t see how they don’t move suter for at least a 20goal scorer + picks/prosepcts, so if you wan that it’s likely Okposo + picks/prospects, not ideal either. That’s why Moulson would be bank for them, 30goalscorer signed cheap for 3yrs.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Dec 3, 2011 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

True

But why give them a 30 goal scorer signed to 3 years on the cheap, when you’re unsure you can resign Suter? It just doesn’t make sense to do something like that. Would Nashville jump at Moulson, maybe, probably, but it wouldn’t be worth it for the Islanders. It’s not just what the Isles are getting in return it’s what they are losing, and in this case, Moulson is too much of an integral part of the core to trade away on a gamble.

I know what youare saying, but this team is built to produce a lot of O now and in the future, especially with Strome/Nino/Lee-even in the wings.

Having a sure thing 25min/gm 2-way d-man for the next half decade would be worth it. Especially given Streit’s age and our D prospect pool.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

Garth can't control

whether Suter makes it though. He can just decide he wants to go on the market. For that reason I say no.

Don't make me bring out the Silky.

by afrosupreme on Dec 3, 2011 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

I think you show the guy how bad you want him though with a trade.

It didn’t work with Smyth because of the GM decisions//team-state. It has worked before for other teams though. We are talking a guy that can make this defense look a lot better, a guy that can eat minutes, a guy that can solidify our blueline for the next 5yrs. We get to negotiate early, we get to show him LI, we get to wine and dine him for months instead of hours. I say go for it.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Dec 3, 2011 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

But if I’m Suter I still think I go to FA, even if to just up the Isles bid even more, think that if they are willing to trade a 30 goal scorer, they’re probably willing to overpay buy a few million.

Don't make me bring out the Silky.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
