Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

[Updated] From the Islanders Twitter feed:
Nino Niederreiter sheds non-contact jersey; skating with Martin and Reasoner ... Nino cleared to play. MacDonald and Eaton will be game time decisions tomorrow. Poulin and de Haan sent back to Bridgeport. Rolston, Staois not on trip.

Bet on updates on who travels (and maybe replaces Brian Rolston?) later on. On the other side, the Islanders have the fortune of not facing a Mikko Koivu tomorrow night.

Isles just tweeted that Cappy confirmed Niño is cleared to play

Idk if that means he will play, but I’d like to see him slotted right in for Rolston, take most of his minutes, if he truly is ready to go

Also, Eaton and AMac are game time decisions

my 2 cents

id say nino is still out, not going to go on the trip, even though even though cappy jsut said he is good to go. You call up either Dibo or Cizikas, potentially even Rhakshani if he is up for it, keep up de Haan and scratch Mottau and Eaton, and let the new d pairings be

Couple of observations from last night....

Streit is really struggling bad…I wonder what he might fetch as trade bait? I think we need a more vocal captain to be honest, one that will read these guys the riot act once in a while. I just dont see him doing that.

I dont wish the concussion on Rolston, or any other player for that matter, but I am excited to see someone take his minutes. I agree that Nino will probably be held out a couple more games. Especially just shedding the no contact jersey today.

JT looks frustrated to me and like he is trying to do too much. Alot of rushes last night he tried to take on the entire Dallas defense. He just has not been that effective the last couple of games. Of course, playing with true #1 linemates might help. Love PA and Matty Mo, but they are second liners on any other team at best.

Looking more and more like we will be a mediocre team for quite a while and this rebuild is still not ready to enter its next phase.

by Tazman19 on Dec 16, 2011 12:14 PM EST reply actions

IMO Streit is not struggling as much as he is being spread out too thin.

If he was being played the way we used him in his previous season, I think he would look fine. But this season, we are expecting him to be multiple types of Dman all rolled into one.

Yeah, he's frustrating

Since I’ve coached kids, I just have first-hand knowledge of the asshattery of opposing parents, so these sorts of stories play on me.

One time my goalie wanted to play a game at forward, which was what he was more used to. The best player on the team volunteered to sub in for him for that game. After a one-hour crash course at our only practice, off he went. At one point, however, he forgot the big Number One Rule I gave him – make sure you stop the puck FIRST, and THEN play it. (That goalie stick’s a lot harder to handle than you think, especially with a catching glove on.) He just tried to slap it to his defense on a dump in and wound up whiffing. Goal.

Do you know, some complete moron on the other bench started the Hexxxxxx-tallll chant on him? (Had to be a Rags fan.) I shouted over, “THE KID IS NINE YEARS OLD!” and he had the grace to shut up and look chagrined. But seriously, dumbass, you really want to do that at a roller hockey game?

So I get protective about crossing the line from verbal to physical menace of children.

I coached youth roller hockey

And I never got to the point where I yelled at the other teams players. More often then not I would talk to the coach or the ref, because the kids were usually just following orders. I can’t remember ever wanting to attack a player though. Now my own kids, that’s a different story.

"The most horrific character assassination ever seen in an arbitration for an NHL player"
  • Newsday, Friday, August 15, 1997

Newsday (8/15/97)

Harsh Words at Salo Arbitration
By Jim Smith. STAFF WRITER

Harsh words often are exchanged in salary arbitration
cases, but an NHL source said Tommy Salo’s hearing Monday
in Toronto moved the Islanders’ goalie to tears.

The source described general manager Mike Milbury’s brief
on Salo as “the most horrific character assassination ever
seen in an arbitration for an NHL player . . . Tommy broke
down in tears before Mike.”

Arbitrator Rolf Valtin yesterday set Salo’s salary for
1997-98 at $750,000 plus incentives. That was a victory
for Milbury in his first arbitration case as GM, because
it was exactly what Milbury offered before Salo asked for
arbitration. At the hearing, however, Milbury offered a
two-way $550,000 deal with a $100,000 minor-league salary.
Salo requested $1.1 million. He earned $300,000 last year.

Milbury’s hard-line stance sends a message to the club’s
other restricted free agents: Travis Green, Bryan
Smolinski, Scott Lachance and Ken Belanger.

Milbury, however, said it had nothing to do with club
ownership reverting to John Pickett after John Spano’s
July 23 arrest on federal fraud charges. “When we have
leverage,” he said, “we must use it because when we don’t
have leverage, it is used incredibly harshly against us.”

In June, Milbury said of Salo, “He was a good player for
us down the stretch. He was pretty solid. I’d say of all
the players out there, he made the biggest leap forward.”

But in his brief on Monday, Milbury:

-Described Salo, who was 20-27-9 with a 2.82 goals-against
average, as “one of the worst-conditioned athletes on the
Islanders” and said his conditioning led to goals in the
final six minutes of 18 games.

-Predicted Salo would not play as many games this season
as last (58).

-Said Salo’s “mental approach also is suspect,” leading to
him allowing many early and soft goals.

-Argued first-round 1997 draft pick Roberto Luongo or
“steady, promising” Eric Fichaud could emerge as the
starter this year, so “there is a substantial risk Salo
ultimately will be returned to Utah [of the IHL].”

-Asserted Salo’s “inconsistent, troubling performance”
last season was the reason Milbury signed journeyman Wade
Flaherty as insurance.

Salo refused comment on Milbury’s presentation. His agent,
Rich Winter, said, “We’re very disappointed, but we’re
glad it’s over. We’re going to try to work together to
repair the damage done.”

Milbury said, “My brief was strong, but my verbal
testimony was not. In the end, I think the arbitrator came
up with a fair number . . . Obviously, you’re not going to
stand there and say everything that’s great about Tommy -
because that’s what they’re doing. We presented the flip
side. But it’s important Tommy hears loud and clear how
important we feel he is. He’s a good, young goaltender. I
hope he establishes himself as a No.1.”

Somewhere on my blog I have a long interview he gave to Stan Fischler after Wang had owned the team for a bit, and how he was going to build the team around youth and use Wangs money to make sure the younger players actually stuck around now. He also said the Devils way of doing things, not the Rangers way, was what he was looking to follow.

Its funny how everybody has wanted Rolston out of the lineup

me being at the top of the list, but now I feel guilty bc its due to a concussion. I realize back in the day there were concussions and they were overlooked or handled improperly, but over the past couple seasons it just seems like its a concussion epidemic and I can;t figure out for the life of me why there seems to be so many more than in the past.

concussions...

Back in august I sustained a minor concussion from a mountain biking accident. I fell off my bike on a down hill and went head first into a tree, cracked the helmet in 5 different places. Basically, i couldn’t run, jog, bike, sleep well, watch tv, study, etc for close to a month. The reason we are seeing more of them is because doctors are starting to understand how detrimental concussions can be to a person. Also, it really does come down to the pads and how people are hitting eachother, pads are too think and people are throwing dangerous checks

Re: pads, I think a big part is more the speed of the game sans obstruction. There’s just so many more opportunities for unprepared sudden contact.

But also we’ve seen some crazy fluke ones which doctors have diagnosed. Giroux getting kneed by a teammate. McDonald falling forward and headbutting an Oiler’s skate (last year). Pucks hitting heads. Crazy stuff.

yeah, a lot of that

Those are just the sorts of things that, in prior years, would be shrugged off as “part of the game” and “got my bell rung a little bit.” Pre-lockout, Nino would have been back on the bench next period. Think about Paul Kariya in the 2003 Finals – hell, if that happened now the Ducks might not have had him for the start of their training camp, much less have him scoring a goal five minutes later… and Scott Stevens would have gotten five games from the Shanaban.

sounds like Eaton and Amac are traveling with the team, so Mottau may be the odd man out anyway. So could be four activations from IR (including Nabokov and Nino) with Rolston going on.

Forgot Staios may be going on as well

so depending on that, it looks like a couple of more moves might be made. My guess it that they still want those guys developing right, and if call-ups are necessary, they’re more likely to be the guys like Haley, Dibo (guys with some more experience) for the time being…or they could just randomly audition guys.

Either way though, it looks like whoever comes up would be auditioning for the healthy scratch which is NG for developing players. I would like to see some more CdH though.

Honestly it is the right move

As much as Mottau sucks (and he really sucks) we need to be careful to develop our prospects the right way, especially the defensemen who generally need more time to get ready.

I’d want someone like Wishart up who it’s time to see if he’ll sink or swim more than CDH who is a 1st year professional.

One Blackhawk parent who did not want to be named says that while the victim is a “punk,” Milbury’s son is “a dirty player and a bigger punk, and not that good of a hockey player.”

That was a great article

Anybody else surprised to hear that Milbury’s son sounds as if he’s as big an asshole as his father?

Every time I rip Milbury to shreds

I think about how the guy has a family. But then, well, you know…where is the apple and where is the tree?

Amazes me

how a 60 year old man grabs a kid by the face, screams at him, lifts him up and tosses him and then has the ability to use his legs enough to walk away from it.

I’m admittedly a hothead, but seriously, if I witnessed that as a parent or as a friend of a parent, I would be swinging objects a him…probably heavy ones.

My husband often worries about my reactions to a coach

Our youngest’s football coach is a complete and utter asshole. Breaking clipboards, yelling across the field at opposing coaches and (my personal most hated) running the score up all while keeping 1st string in the entire game.

Unfortunately, I have been known to let this coach know exactly what I think of him, and my son suffered by not playing much this season and I truly am trying hard to talk him out of playing a second season with this guy.

My thought is he isn’t learning anything about fair play and he certainly is not being able to utilize anything he is learning at pactice in a game by sitting.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, NOTHING surprises me with behaviors of egotistical youth coaches.

i don't have any kids

But I went to see my niece play volleyball a lot this year. She’s 12. My sister yells and screams at the ref, the coach, one time when they didn’T play my niece as much as she wanted, she started yelling she was going to cheer for the other team. I no longer go see my niece pl

My point is, I agree. The only reason to play sports at a young age is to learn how to play by the rules and learn how to win and lose the right way. People like this people ruin that.

Oh some of the parents are unreal too

without a doubt!
I try very very hard NOT to be one of those parents that screams and yells and trust me, with 4 of our 5 kids that play sports year round, my tongue has been bitten off more than once. Mainly because I do not want my kids to think that is acceptable.

If I don’t want my kids to act like fools, I certainly don’t want them playing for someone that is an even bigger fool!
When you live in a small town like we do, you hope that your kids learn from all the experiences in youth sports and they give back and help coach. Our 17 year old son helps coach our little league challenger division and one of our 14 year old daughters helps with pitching lessons for all the 12U and 9U softball teams.

You know what's disappointing on NHL network....

no mention of this Milbury incident. C’mon, let’s get some public mockery going on!

Cookies?

So Nino’s skating w/out non-contact jersey. Discuss who travels on #isles road trip, and your cookie recipes. http://sbn.to/t3V1BE

I can’t share recipes because I don’t use cups, but I have pics.

Those are last year’s cookies. I’m starting my Christmas baking tomorrow.

Wow!

They look delicious!

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

They look like you bought them at a chic little cookie shop bakery. :)
I cant imagine the effort that goes into making them all so neat and cute!

Yes it is rewarding

I always prefer making things for people and Christmas it is always either cookies or chocolates for the teachers and then I crochet too, so someone always gets something I’ve made for them. This year I made Christmas stockings for my house and 2 of my friends families.

And on that note, time to start rolling out my sugar cookie dough! LOL I’ve already made Cookies and Cream Bark, Nutella Truffles, Peanut Butter Smore Cookies and Chocolate Crinkle Cookies with Caramel and Mint Kisses.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
