Bridgeport/Islanders Prospect Roundup, Dec 11th

Brock Nelson, Player of the week for the 2nd week in a row. Now if we had any pics of Trivino, he'd be up here. But we don't. We also have very few good picks of Nelson.

It's a tough stretch of games for Bridgeport, as they dropped both games this week and have lost 5 of their last 6 (although 2 of those were OTLs). The only good news is that both goalies are looking better, and Scott Howes had 2 points in last nights game to continue his point per game average. BP is still above .500 on the year, and is still within 2 points of a playoff spot.

Sunday December 4th Vs Hershey (Capitals)

Trevor Frischmon scored two goals in this game and was named 2nd star of the night. Unfortunately sandwiched between those goals were 3 goals by Hershey including 2 by Keith Aucoin. Aaron Ness, Tim Wallace and Steven Olesky had the assists. Kevin Poulin had 29 saves on 32 shots. BP also went 0/8 on the PP and one of Aucoin's goals was an unassisted shortie. Highlights

Saturday December 10th Vs Portland (Coyotes)

The Sound Tigers came out strong with 2 goals in the first by Howes (Calvin De Haan, Rhett Rakhshani) and Colliton (Howes, Ty Wishart). Unfortunately Curtis McElhinney worked the same magic on BP that he does against the Islanders, holding them scoreless the rest of the way. Portland scored the next 4 goals (including an empty netter) to get the win. Howes was named second star of the night. Anders Nilsson had 25 saves on 28 shots. Highlights. Interesting video of them covering the ice after a game.

Star-divide

Natural Born Kirills

Kirill Petrov added an assist this week and is now at 10 goals, 7 assists for 17 points in 30 games. PP Goal

Kirill Kabanov had a good game and a bad game this week. In his first game he had no points and was a -2. In his second game he had 2 goals and was named 2nd star of the night. In 17 games he has 12 g, 10 a for 22 points.

CHL

After a quiet two games (an assist and -1) Ryan Strome exploded with 1 goal and 3 assists on the way to a 5-3 win over Mississauga and first star of the night honors. He is now at Camp for Team Canada. Teammate Mitchell Therot had a goal in 4 games this week.

3 games and 3 more losses for the Red Deer Rebels. John Persson racked up 3 assists and a -3 in those games.

In 2 games this week Brenden Kitchton had 2 assists and was a +2 and was named 2nd star of the night on Friday night. Kichton is now off to Camp for Team Canada.

Andrey Pedan had a goal and 3 assists in 3 games this week and finished a total of -1. He was also named 2nd star of the night in the game last Sunday.

Hit the Books*: NCAA

*Diving 101 is popular

Notre Dame and Anders Lee both bounced out of their streaks last night. Notre Dame ended a 4 game losing streak, while Lee ended his pointless streak with an assist.

Brock Nelson was again named WCHA Player of the Week which begs the question of why the 19 year old Brock wasn't invited to Team USA camp [edit: Never mind, he turned 20 in October.]. Quiet weekend for Brock as Nebraska-Omaha held them to 2 goals in 2 games while splitting the weekend. Brock was on the Ice for the lone UND goal on Saturday that won the game.

Corey Trivino continues to push hard to be noticed by any Pro team. On Thursday he notched the game winning goal against UNH and on Saturday followed that up with a 2 goal performance and 1st star of the night honors. The former 2nd round pick is on pace to score as many goals this year as he had through his previous 3 years.

Jason Clark played both games for Wisconsin but had no points.

Scott Mayfield had no points in 2 games for Denver, and was a -1.

Cody Rosen Did Not Play this weekend

Finnish Loans & Trust

Mikko Koskinen's stats came down to earth a tad as in 8 games he's got a 1.25 GAA and .949 SV% and is 6-1-1

Jesse Joensuu added an assist this week and now has 9 goals and 9 assists in 20 games. Joensuu seems to be connecting with another lost Islanders prospect, Jason Krog.

good job

with the roundup but a could we be spoiled and get season totals for all the players? there’s always only totals for the natural born killers and noone else. (petrov has been on 10 goals forever, what the hell happen?)

I’ve been trying to change it up from week to week, because just writing the season totals over and over was starting to drive me nuts. Next week I’ll post everyones season total

the Bridgeport prospects are easy enough to find

The Sound Tigers website will have everything you need on them.

We may be in the box, but you get the penalty.

is born 1991 thus not eligible for WJC.

Not even from back when he was drafted?
Sheesh- SB Nations array of photos are probably the worst and most limiting aspect of their sports coverage.

Believe it or not, their photo license agreements didn’t begin until well after Trivino was drafted. (So we have a bunch from the 09, 10 and 11 drafts but not then.) SBN has agreements with Getty and AP, so the photo usage has to stay on the up and up.

Not those

I don’t think anybody does. But if they brought back the proir dark blue sweaters, then I would die happy. Those are by far my favorite Islander sweaters of all time.

The action pics of Nelson are even worse, there’s a few good Team USA ones, but he seems to be falling over or just has an odd look on his face.

Most of those pics

are from when he got injured during the WJC, so yeah they’re going to be of him falling down or on the ice.

I thought Mayfield was supposed to be something of a 2 way defensmen?

Or had some offensive upside? He doesnt really seem to be getting any points

I think of him more as a big strong tough defenseman than one who is going to be on offense.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

by TheMetalChick on Dec 11, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I know hes supposed to be a big defense first guy

But around when he was drafted there was some positive mention of his skating and his puck moving abilities. Id be more than happy with a solid defensive d man in the pipeline as we dont have many of those i was just wondering if he simply wasnt being used in offensive situations or if he just hasnt found that part of his game

"Mario Lemiuex… I used to respect you."- Turgeon1992

by Zhora on Dec 11, 2011 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

that's true

Mayfield is projected to become anywhere from a 1st to 3rd pairing D, depending on whether the offense comes. He is huge, mean, hits, will fight, can skate and pass…but i agree with you, he doesn’t seem to be getting the points…

I hope the Isles sign Lee, maybe even Nelson in the off-season and get them both to the AHL.

2008 Draft:

In NHL with Isles
Bailey, Hamonic, Ullstrom and Martin are/will have NHL careers of 400 plus games…

In AHL with Isles’ farm team
Ness, Donovan, Poulin, Dibo

Still Isles’ property
Trivino (NCAA), Petrov (KHL),

No longer Isles property
Neimi(Rags’ system) , Toews (Hawks’ system-Isles did a good deed, sent him to big bro’s team), Spurgeon (Dallas NHL)

by CanadianIsleslifer on Dec 11, 2011 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Spurgeon

Is with the Wild, not Dallas. He sees significant PP time and is often in the top 4 paired with Marco Scandella. basically he’s a younger MA Bergeron at this point.

Toews

is so off the depth chart at Chicago that he’s on the ECHL team.

Brian Day is in the Penguins system, Blake Kessel is in Philly’s system.

I know Duncan Keith was a mid 2nd rounder too

There just aren’t as many sure thing D-Men as forwards. They take longer to develop typically so more will slip through the cracks to the second round.

Freshman Year at DU

You don’t know what kind of ice time he’s getting, who his D partner is, or what role he’s been asked to play….in many schools freshmen play lesser roles (like Nelson did last year at NoDak and Trivino did for a majority of his time at BU) while they grow into their roles. Let’s not rush to judgment on him yet – college is a different animal for development.

Kind of a cult hero among Sabres fans

The League was not amused… in fact, the official draft registers no longer have Taro Tsujimoto listed, or at most have “pick forfeited” or something.

I think 7th round picks are worthless, and Snow saw something he liked in the kid. It’s not his fault he’s stuck behind Karpowhich who is just playing out of his mind.

I remember a story that had something from Garth in it that Rosen reminded him of himself since he was originally a backup at Maine. Of course backup on a powerhouse is a little different than on Clarkson.

Hey now...

Let’s not bash on my Golden Knights. We were a pretty darn good team when I was there. Then they built the team a beautiful state of the art arena and moved them out of the old barn Walker arena. And they have sucked ever since. Sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for.

Lee too.

But damn Nelson is showing something.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Dec 11, 2011 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

Everybody has slumps

Lets not forget that this is only Lee’s sophmore season i believe and Petrovs second season where hes getting real ice time. JT is our best offensive player at any level and he just went 13 games without a goal lol

by Zhora on Dec 11, 2011 5:16 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I understand, but some players can't get away with being streaky because they aren't a high-end enough talent like JT.

Streakiness is one of the reason’s Comeau is gone, and could be a reason why petrov/lee become nothing more then 3rd liners, just saying.

From everything I've seen and heard

Petrov is a solid NHL player. It’s just tough writing updates for him because the English KHL site is very bad, so I can’t find game summaries.

I hear you. You do a great job on this and I appreciate it.

I just am so confused on Petrov. I’ve heard everything from top 6 offensive skills to defensive incompetence to evident streakiness etc, etc. I have no idea what to expect, but his size and numbers seem interesting.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
