Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

And to think about 2 weeks ago people thought the Isles were going to be the first ones to fire their coach. I wonder how this affects any possible trades for Bobby Ryan.

Was about to post this too

Haha, didn’t take Bruce long to find a job. I think the same may be said about Randy Carlyle

Holy cow!

And after a 4-1 win, no less.

Man, you have to be a sick puppy to be an NHL coach.

Yeah I watched the game

One of the better performances of the season for the Ducks, but their recent play has been poor.

Interesting

Of course I get that you don’t change your mind after one game, but that has to suck for the coach. “Finally we get what I’ve been asking for. This feels ni— wait, what’s that? Bob wants to see me? Now?”

Decision was already made

Apparently. Just need to sign contracts, etc. Still needed him to coach tonight. At any rate I feel like Anaheim are one of the few teams that may be able to fit into Boudreau’s style.

I'm not saying that the Ducks aren't a good fit for Boudreau

but it seems like a pretty low class move to dump the only coach that’s ever won you a cup, right after you give him a contract extension, based on only 1/4th of a season.

You wouldn't believe how good the Corsi is for my NHL 12 Be A Pro player.

I agree

…but that is often how it works in the NHL. I don’t know why, but coaches don’t have much leeway. Doesn’t make me think very highly of NHL GMs in general. Just hire the right coach in the first place and you wouldn’t need a new one every couple seasons!

I'd rather have the contract extension before I was fired, at least he continues to get paid.

I have no problem giving an extension even if you are unsure whether to keep a coach or not. Maybe only a year beyond the current season, but I hate the idea of a lame duck (no pun intended) coach going into the season and giving the players and automatic out. I think you show a coach respect by giving him the insurance of a contract extension and then allowing him to go out there and do his job without the spectre of being unemployed over his head. BB and PM both had the same 1/4 of a season and got tagged as well so apparently that is enough to know if the coach is going to turn it around or not. Even the best coaches have expiration dates.

by Hockey1919 on Dec 1, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

That was quick

In respect to Bruce Boudreau, this might be a record for NHL head coaches, being fired on a Monday morning and being hired on a different team by Wednesday night. I suspect Randy Carlyle will land somewhere else sooner rather than later, but I don’t think it will be a matter of days.

This may also end a lot of the Bobby Ryan trade rumors.

Seriously, let’s say capuano decided to step down tomorrow, would Carlyle be a good fit for this club? I effectively know nothing about him or his coaching style.

It's nothing personal, Cappy. Just business.

Please Garth. Pick up the phone and call Randy Carlisle.

Not surprised

I think a lot of people share the sentiment that Boudreau is an immensely talented coach. He’ll have a good chance to prove it landing in Anaheim.

And yea, I’d imagine those Bobby Ryan rumors are probably dead now…

not necessarily

The GM may have a lot of irons in the fire, and I don’t see Boudreau’s hiring stopping a deal that helps Anaheim.

For now, a trade is off of the table

RealKyper: #Ducks GM Bob Murray has assured Bobby Ryan he is off #NHL trading market today. Also told Ryan’s desire to be moved is no longer an issue.

It was no mystery that Bobby Ryan and Carlyle weren’t on best terms. Sounds like things escalated and Ryan asked for a trade. With Carlyle gone, they have no reason to trade him.

Does this ever happen?

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of a coach being hired by one team during the same season that he’s fired by another team (after just one week, no less!).

Official choice of Lighthouse Dog #1.

by Fabtraption on Dec 1, 2011 6:55 AM EST reply actions

I think it's the right move

I was actually surprised they renewed his contract in the first place. He won a Stanley Cup, but with Burke as a GM and the right players for his system. The Cup-winning Ducks are no more. Everybody except Seelänne, Perry, Getzlaf and Parros left. Carlyle’s system just doesn’t fit the actual Anaheim roster anymore. For God’s sake, the Ducks missed the playoffs in 2010 with 10 Olympians on their roster!
Carlyle also has the bad habit of picking his men and working them into the ground. No wonder key players are a shell of themselves every spring.
I also don’t like what he was doing with Sbisa. I’m so used to see Sbisa nailed to his third, that I forgot he was drafted as an offensive defenceman. He wasn’t even allowed to cross the offensive blueline with the puck. The last time he did that, Carlyle hammered him as soon as he got off the ice. He tried to transform Sbisa into another Carlyle (he was once a successful gritty stay-at-home defenceman), what he is not.
Like former Duck Aaron Ward said: “he sucked the life and fun out of the game”.

Yea

I’m interested to see if Boudreau has learned enough to balance some defense in, but that top line for ANA is going to go bonkers, and they’re all going to start having a lot of fun.

I don't think Cap is going anywhere at this point

If the Isles were truly upset with Cap, etc, they would’ve made their play already. Could be wrong of course, but I think they’ll let Cap ride out the year at this point.

Isles rule, rangers suck... that's just how it is.

by Timtropolis on Dec 1, 2011 7:38 AM EST reply actions

though the Islanders as we know

are truly an unorthodox team, when it comes to about anything regarding hockey. So who knows.

Carlisle definitely is a good coach, proving with the right pieces he could win a cup and did so in a non traditional market. That has to be worth an extra point as well. The thing with Anaheim this year and since the cup year, is that they have nothing behind their first two lines, really you could say its just Teemu (at the tail end) on that second line. No good role players like Vancouver or Boston, no great defensive 3rd line. He also has managed to make the playoffs the past several years.

Crazy week for coaches. Then you have guys like Babcock and Ruff, who sit back and laugh.

by ghalbart on Dec 1, 2011 8:00 AM EST up reply actions

Basically some really good coaches being fired

after long stints of success just because their teams stop listening and tune them out.

Since that’s really the typical life of a professional coach, it really makes you admire the success/longevity of Lindy Ruff don’t it?

Also

just noticed who was promoted to be Boudreau’s assistant-Brad Lauer! Ex-Isles all up in all these coaching changes.

One thing to think about

Carlyle was a good NHL defenseman for a long time – Norris winner and All-Star. I’m willing to wager that he would be a great benefit to any team with young defensemen, who were looking to not give up 31 shots a game.

Just sayin’ is all.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
