When bored airborne Islanders take to Twitter...

For those of you who don't follow the Islanders tweets, I thought you might get a kick out of a really funny Twitter exchange that happened amongst Matt Moulson, Michael Grabner, Kyle Okposo and Matt Martin on today's plane ride to Buffalo.  Matt Moulson started it all off with an innocuous food comment that Michael Grabner skated down the ice with:

Matt Moulson: "On the plane to beautiful Buffalo. Picked up some for the ride."

Michael Grabner: "On the plane to buffalo.  [Kyle Osposo] stuffing his face with some chipotle..great entertainment..   [With his next tweet, Grabner showed a picture of Okposo chowing down a big bowl of Chipotle.]

Matt Moulson: "Ten seconds after that photo was taken, [Kyle Okposo] ate the camera... OKPOSO HUNGRY! OKPOSO SMASH"

Kyle Okposo: "It's not my fault [Michael Grabner] refuses to eat anything... "

Matt Martin: "I thought [Michael Grabner] has been looking a little skinny lately too, but it must be tough to eat with no hands haha " [An obvious reference to Grabner's numerous unsuccessful breakaway attempts on Saturday.]

Michael Grabner: "You can start talking about scoring goals when you can't count your goals on one hand bud.. "

Michael Grabner: "Heard [Matt Moulson] and [Kyle Okposo] are having a dress up party in their hotel room.. Mouls gona be a princess and oky a lil mermaid.. " [Evidently, the tweet digs continue even after the plane has landed.]

it's worth it

Moulson and Grabner are constantly ripping on each other, great now that the other guys are getting in on it.

You wouldn't believe how good the Corsi is for my NHL 12 Be A Pro player.

I subscribe to Michael Grabner's posts on Facebook

It’s the same things there that Grabner also posts on Twitter. I check Facebook far more often than Twitter.

For those who want a quick and dirty version

Here’s a link that lumps together tweets made by various members of the Islanders and Sound Tigers…

Also, it appears that the Twitter dialogue between Moulson and Grabner won some sort of award back in June.

Not a big deal...

but this probably should have been a fan shot…
and tweets are fun when you’re winning. When your season is over in November you probably need to start having shit taken away… There are 8 or 9 people that paid good money for their season tickets… and these bozo’s are playing grab ass in public.

Time for some bigger names to start getting their mail sent to the press box. I know this is unpopular, but I’ve said it a few times now… Captain smiley face and the happy garbage collector might want to show they care more than kindergarten kids who just set their first dollhouse on fire.

I almost wrote this … twice, but I’m trying to be less negative. I’m not saying these guys should be moping around, but publicly joking about this stuff is pretty annoying. And yet we fault Roloson (or whomever) for the country club comment…

I still think Weight came here because of the country club atmosphere-high pay, lowno pressure. Probably why he stayed.

Don't make me bring out the Silky.

I agree...

…I dnt mind the guys on the team having some fun. But when your losing, like we are (shutout 6 times), I believe preparation for the next game should be the focus.

You always hear from the great players (no matter the sport) that its all in the preparation.

by BattFist on Nov 29, 2011 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

every time I add Weight to the equation...

my mood gets heavier.
I don’t mind the guys going out together, laughing, being buds… that’s awesome. But when you’re the worst team in the NHL keep the PDA’s to a minimum… WE (the guys who follow this crap like it actually meant something) know that these are just young men having fun… but it’s their responsibility to MAKE IT FUN for all of us… and the shit that’s going on on the ice is NOT FUN.
So… This is why my two targets are shifting from the devil droppings to the happy wanderers… Moulson, grabner and Okposo. they have a pretty good idea of what that locker room can be like in good times… without there being GOOD TIMES. Last year is over… if you want to be the Tweet-king… win some games… sell out the Coli on tuesday nights… BE MEN for 3 hours a night!

I am somewhere in this range

The banter makes me somewhat uncomfortable given the team’s record, but then I remind myself it’s a new era, I’m an old fart, and social media changes everything.

Essentially: Would I want these kids not to rib each other on the plane just because they’re losing? (No. That would get awfully depressing awfully quick.) So I think it’s more on adapting to social media reality rather than kids smiling through the losing. They certainly did their share of depressing losing tweets last year.

Come on

How can you expect the guys to win if they are somber and depressed? Let them have some fun and it might show up on the ice. Anyway, I think this kind of banter tends to follow wins.

I don't mind what I don't see...

You don’t have a public party when grandma’s lying in the box… well.. unless everybody hates grandma.

Sure but

that’s the point – it is a game and they should be having fun, and especially after a win.

this probably should have been a fan shot…

My apologies. I’m new here so I’m still learning what material is deserving of a Fanshot and what material is deserving of a Fanpost. I considered posting this as a Fanshot but don’t all Fanshots start with a hyperlink? I didn’t know how to accomplish that with my list of tweets. I definitely need to be educated on this.

If I told you I have a Mike Mottau jersey, will you still respect me in the morning?

Welcome...

and it’s not really a big deal. I was in a post MNF depression and I needed to find something to complain about besides the Giants’ lack of a defensive coordinator who has the ability to prepare his team consistently… but I digress.
I’m not absolutely sure on the “rule of thumb”, but the fan-shot v fan-post, but the fan post are usually for more thought out posts. If it’s solely a link to an outside source for discussion it’s definitely a “shot”… this is basically a rehash of tweets, which Keith usually does quite well in the context of the daily front page responses.
Again.. not a biggie… and I most certainly am not the one to lecture on where to put what when… but I have stayed in a Holiday Inn express.

Actually, since it is a fairly long exchange

I think FanPost was the way to go. FanShots are for brief thoughts, links, videos, and I’m not sure how you’d capture all this there.

We try not to have too many purely frivolous FanPosts (I wouldn’t want all of their Twitter trips transcribed), but this was worth doing IMO.

I see your point

It’s like the ‘country club’ comment from last years slide. You don’t want the players to be comfortable with losing. But they had a good last game (these players in particular). They feel like they are getting their groove back. I’m not going to fault them for having some fun.

Great catch. Unintentional but nonetheless great dialogue. :)

My favorite tweet of the exchange

Matt Martin gets the win.

Yes...

he’s the grittiest, and the wittiest… It would be nice if he took one of their jobs… and they wouldn’t even have to change the monogram on the towels… if you know what I mean.

You know what I noticed though?

They haven’t been “chirping” at each other on twitter lately like they were doing during the second half of the season.

Does this mean maybe they haven’t been as “loose” and playful and goofy? I don’t know. But I do know that I did realize that yesterday when I saw those tweets.

Kind of a chicken/egg thing… if you want to be loose, WIN… if you want to WIN, be loose!

I like it

Good to see that these guys can still be a bit loose and have a little fun while sitting on a plane. I’d be more worried if they were acting like they were at a funeral.

As long as they get it done on the ice, they could be sacrificing goats to Baal on their own time for all I care.
