I think Reasoner will sit the next one

As for the goaltending :(
I would take a chance with Nilsson. Seriously… he can’t do any worse than DiPietro yesterday.

I'm pretty sure Nilsson is going to get starts

4 games this week and an injury-prone DP? He definitely will get 1 or 2 starts.

Unless they screw around

and bring up Poulin instead. Which I could see since he has NHL experience. I’m surprised they would call up the leading goal scorer before a game today…unless they REALLY want to get him into the lineup and want him practicing REALLY bad. Also, they should send Nilsson back down so Poulin isn’t playing his 3rd game in 3 days.

Unless

there is something regarding the severity of his injury, Montoya may very well only miss the PIT game. Would make sense to do this if it’s only a tweak.

Interesting

I’m looking forward to seeing Ullstrom. The big Swede may bring some fight with him. I think goalies stay how they were last night with DP-Nillsson. Unfortunate that Al is going on the IR right after Nabby did…

I think BC gets scratched though, this is the lineup I hope we see:

Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
Grabner-Nielsen-PA
Ullstrom-Bailey-Nino
Martin-Reasoner-Pandolfo

by edavidmorris on Nov 20, 2011 12:36 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I posted this in the other thread, but just so everyone is aware

Ullstrom hasn’t played center since 10/16…I wouldn’t look for him to be playing that position. He has been LW since then. The underwhelming LWs are Rolston and Comeau

MM/JT/Grabs
Ullstrom/FN/PAP
Martin/Bailey/Nino
Comeau/Reasoner/Okposo

Done..no more Devils…keep Pandolfo to scare Comeau and KO.

A week late

I would also bring up Haley, Wishart, and if ready DiBo, Ness and deHaan
My wife and I are big Isle fans (go to games and watch all the others), but last night was the first time I can remeber shutting the TV off in the 3rd period. I have no desire to watch Rolston, Eaton, Mattou, Pandolfo, Reasoner. And am not a big fan of DiPi. He comes across as selfish when he tries to do to much with the puck (wants the glory rather than do what is smart for the team). 90% of the time it comes back to bite him. I appreciate his effort to come back from injury, but he makes too many bad decisions for an NHL goalie.

I can watch the Isles lose games if the kids are playing and I’m watching them develop. I can’t watch them lose with a bunch of slow over-the-hill veterans.

Last night was the first time i left a game before the end in years

But last night I was very, very tempted. The only thing that kept me there was to watch Anders Nilsson.

When I saw that kid in the Blue-White scrimmage down at ice level, he looked BIG. But, man, that kid even looks monstrous from the 300s.

FINALLY!!!

At least there is something to get excited about again. It won’t fix much because their deeper problems are on defense…
But what it will do, if they play ot that way, is give them four lines with legitimate pffensive pressure and scoring ability. Here’s how I THINK it should be:
Moulson-Tavares-Parentau… yes… together again.

Grabner-Nielsen-Nino… United nations Line. Grabner and Nielsen need to go back to the PK and be kept off the PP. Nino should get some PP time on the second unit. Nino on the RW shold bring what Comeau does to the LW… with better net presence.

Ullsrom-Reasoner-Okposo… OUR GANG… If Okposo comes back hungry he’ll have a LW that can finish, and reasoner is a smart playmaker that will help them get through the nuetral zone.

comeau-Bailey-Martin… MBC line should spark MBC (March Blake Comeau)

by OzzyFan on Nov 20, 2011 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

Headache, Heartburn and Heartbroken

Those are the words that I use to describe the season so far.

Snow added some old time vets to get the kids some stability and tossed Konopka overboard because of his influence on the locker room. I will take Z over the NJ Devils contingent any day of the week. Rolston has nothing to offer but an occasional big shot. He is an absolute defensive liability who doesn’t hit. Pandolfo is better than expected but I would prefer to see the grit and fight of Haley.

Defensively….Mottau is awful. I feel for him because he has lost vision in one of his eyes after last seasons accident and it is absolutely impacting his play.

Eaton is mediocre and Jurcina needs a partner who can play.

Most of us saw the season through the lens of our players being half full. Today we have found that we have a team of less filling or half empty. I say bring in the hungry boys and get rid of the tired players.

by TheMagus on Nov 20, 2011 1:00 PM EST reply actions

What is it with Goalies

on this team. Why cant we just have a starter and back up. How we go from a gang of them to barely enough to field a team is just not right.
Capuano’s after game conference was great, seeing him fired up. You could have inserted most fans and had the same sentiment. Does seem like he wants changes he is not allowed by Snow.. Still need some defense help, but maybe we can start to exorcist the Devils from the line-up and gradually bring in some Bridge d-man.

I know Christmas is over a month away

but hey Santa, bring me these lines, just for tomorrow, and I’ll be good for the rest of the year:

Moulson-Tavares-Grabner
Okposo-Nielsen-Parenteau
Comeau-Ullstrom-Niederreiter
Martin-Reasoner-Pandolfo

Just for one night let the checking line be a checking line again. Keep Comeau and Nino together between a center with some young legs, bc together they have been showing some physicality and offensive push, and for the love of Christmas, scratch Old Man Rolston!

Sorry Josh Bailey, for the night, you’re collateral damage.

We're all Islanders...except maybe the guys who are rumored to get traded.

by Chris McNally on Nov 20, 2011 1:21 PM EST reply actions

Hes here as a forward

Unless you got a call from Jack Capuano, to say hes here as strictly a lw is pretty presumptuous. He hasnt played center in a month. Its not like he hasnt played in 2 years.

When Bailey was here last year, was he here as a center? Bc I couldve sworn he got played on the wing for a stretch.

When Blake Comeau was here last year was he here as a wing, bc I couldve sworn for two games he played center…thats right, center.

I’m not saying its going to happen, but to assume theres no way a natural center isnt playing center bc hes played 10 games at wing is kind of silly.

Plus if you look at the Sound Tiger roster, they are center heavy. With Ullstrom-Cizikas-Colliton-Frischmon they have 4 Top 9 (for Bridgeport) centers. So are you going to play one on your checking line or are you going to move one to a wing? Is he going to play on the wing with the Islanders? Maybe. But 10 games at LW in some guys career after hundreds at center doesn’t all of the sudden make him only a LW.

We're all Islanders...except maybe the guys who are rumored to get traded.

swap Martin and Comeau, Martin has played well and deserves more TOI. If Comeau wants to continue to play like a 4th liner than thats where he should be

by Killbox76 on Nov 20, 2011 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Im in the minority

that seems to think if Martin gets too much ice time, hes going to lose some of his effectiveness. And I think that minority involves the coaching staff. Its undeniable that he’s been one of our best forwards and with healthy scratches and unproductive forwards, Martin still hasn;t found himself promoted off the 4th line.

Some guys, especially physical, energy guys, are best when they get 10 minutes a game. Its like a reserve in baseball whos hitting .300 off the bench but when he finally gets a starting gig he hits .220. Or an effective third down back in football who finally gets 20 carries a game and can;t average more than 2 yards a carry.

I think Martins role is on the 4th line, and hes damn good in his role. I dont know how much he would bring with an increased role.

We're all Islanders...except maybe the guys who are rumored to get traded.

by Keith Quinn on Nov 20, 2011 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

i understand your point....but

Martin leads the team in hits, he skates hard every shift. He’s not taking stupid penaltys. Playing responsible defensively. Hes second on the team in shots on goal with limited ice time, and he’s only a -1. With the poor play of the rest of the team, I think he has earned the right for more ice time. I myself would love to see a Martin, Ullsrom, Nino line in tomorrows game.

by Killbox76 on Nov 20, 2011 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

I don't disagree...

But I think he’d have to change his style of play to take a regular shift with comeau and bailey. You won’t see him forechecking by going from one side of the rink to the other just to lay two guys out, but what you’ll see more of is what you saw on the Pandolfo goal the other night… where bailey trails and he causes a train wreck in front of the net.
In my PERFECT WORLD there is no “fourth line”… each line should have a bit of THE CAPTAIN in ’em!

That leaves one forward spot available for; Comeau; Rolston and Pandolfo.

Question

I’m not sure if they’re all worded like this , but I don’t think so. I noticed it said Ullstrom was recalled on loan from Bridgeport. Does that mean his time here is limited barring a permanent recall? Does it just mean that they don’t expect Montoya to be on IR for a long time so its only a temporary recall.

I should probably know this, but I’m confused by the loan concept.

Since the 2008 rebuild began, how many draft picks have made it to the show?

I’d say JT and Hamonic are obviously there…Bailey is an NHL 4th liner with potential for improvment, Martin is close to being a solid NHL 4th liner but not quite there…Dibo and Nino have had some time, so too has Klementyve, Poulin and now Ullstrom and Neilsson. It is at least a little more exciting seeing some of the rebuild kids get called up, so long as their not called up before their ready. Ullstrom has been on fire scoring lately in the AHL, and he at least can bring some physicality.

We need more of this!

How about as soon as Nabby and Montoya come back trade Nabby for what we can get and stop waiting and waiting for some perfect offer, we need the roster spot so we can bring up someone else from Bridgeport. I would like to see Haley. He could help put an end to goalies being run and JT being cross checked four times in a row. Garth has done a good job rebuilding the Prospect pool but he screwed up when he did not sign Konopka, sent Haley and Gillies down to give roster spots to the walking dead (too many to list) those guys at least played with passion and could kick ass, so the few skilled guys we have did not have to worry about being pushed around. Also why not sign Brian Mccabe give him 4.5 mil (prorated) for the rest of the year so we can send DP down to the AHL and waive mottau. McCabe has to be an improvement over Mottau and then we could bring up Poulin in place of DP. We can also waive Pandolfo and give some else a chance. That would be a real shake up.

You are right (with a but)

Grabner’s emergence really helped swell the Islander’s offensive numbers (and get them some wins). And Konopka was both fairly and unfairly targetted by the officials which kept the Isles short handed so he had to go. But I think you may undervalue what these guys brought.

Sports are basically an outlet for our innate drive for aggression and competition, and hockey is peppered with terms like “battle”, “kill”, and “hit”. Playing a hockey game with full emotion is like going into a battle with your teammates. When you see that one or two guys pushing back against the enemy. Winning the physical battle, it does something to your own psyche and motivation. Even off the ice with silly things like Konopka saying he was going to take his Mario poster down from his bedroom wall, it gives your team a boost. That type of thing has been largely missing from this group, and may be why these young kids are having a hard time competing.

Dont get me wrong, i did love Konopka

my comment was

replacing three player that at least were tough with guys that are sleep walking. I think Garth Screwed up by stripping the team of almost all toughness. My comment was not that Konopka is the second coming.

by Smoothcatdaddy on Nov 20, 2011 5:17 PM EST reply actions

Well Rolston has been sleepwalking yes

But Reasoner has simply been misused by Capuano, hes a 4th line defensive/PK specialist, not a 3rd line center with offensive upside. And Pandolfo at least is a decent Penalty killer, probably better than zeke and definitely a better player than gillies.

true

so waive Rolston and bring someone up. We can always bring Rolston back up if the callup does not work out. I was just throwing out some ideas to shake things up. I would rather waive Pandolfo.

I think it's all about Ullstrom

Plus they’re hoping Nilsson gets a start to really capture U.S. attention.

Here's your pre-game

The Penguins Crosby Crosby Crosby but winning without Crosby Crosby Crosby.

And then there are the Islanders.

All eyes on Crosby

I hope the Isles will not be ridiculed like Saturday night with all these eyes watching.

DaveLozo: Fill in the blank: Sidney Crosby’s first game back will draw a total of _______ viewers. (More than Bruins-Canucks Game 7, I think)

DaveLozo: Bruins-Canucks Game 7 did 18 million viewers between here and Canada, if memory serves.

CINDY CROSBY STRIPPING OFF HER SKIRT TOMORROW & SUITING UP FOR PENGUINS!

i really hope haley is recalled. if i remember correctly, the last time these 2 teams met, orpik was taking cheap shots at jt the entire game.be great if haley would punish/deter him. at this point i am loathe to have martin play bodyguard when he is clearly one of the only forwards working hard every shift.bring up micheal to send a message to both benches.

If I'm Snow I make a public comment "hoping the officiating is fair" and damn the fine...

because you KNOW that the league will be out to protect its Poster Child and there WILL be a garbage penalty/penalties called if an Islander gets within 3 feet of Crosby’s air space.

I suggest a FIPC for tomorrows game.

by ArsenalLI on Nov 20, 2011 7:25 PM EST reply actions

Can we start placing players where they belong?

Comeau should be scratched – or at best 4th Line + PK
Rolston should be scratched – or at best 4th Line + PP
Reasoner belongs on Line 4 – put him there and keep him there
Pandolfo is okay as a 4th line RW

implies

Moulson-Tavares-Nino (why not give that a try)
FNGO (why not try that again)
Ullstrom-Bailey-Parenteau (maybe this will wake up JB)
Martin-Reasoner-Pandolfo (has been effective as a 4th line – keep it intact)

scratch Rolston, Comeau – please
scratch Eaton & Mottau as well, and call up Ness – please
call up Poulin and start him – please

"We can't get pushed around," Haley said. "What commentators say about us, that's their job. My job is to try and limit as many people who want to take liberties with our guys as possible."

by BobbyNystromOwnsYou on Nov 20, 2011 9:09 PM EST reply actions

Matt Martin does that job Alone

Secondary hitting comes from Blake Comeau (when he feels like it) and Nino (our rookie) . It seems that our skill players don’t hit. Maybe it will click for them when they get ran over by poster boy Crosby.

I watched the game with a friend. I caught myself explaining to him “yeah he had him lined up for the check, but that guys not a hitter.” I felt the shame that a die hard fan feels when he realizes the players lack the drive you need to bruise and get bruised.

How do you fix that?

by asantono on Nov 21, 2011 2:22 AM EST up reply actions

I'm at the point where, despite the very real possibility of him scoring,

it may be time to consider making Moulson a healthy scratch to send an unmistakable message; he gets away with a lot that others might not because his tendency to score is so high – but he was almost as indifferent and frustrating to watch off the puck as Coma Saturday night…..

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
