PAFnGO? Scoring Chances - Oct. 27 Islanders-Penguins
When you're trying to accumulate statistics and share them with the masses, you try and get the numbers as accurate as possible. I'll let you in on a little secret: when I record each scoring chance, I only need to record the who, when, where, and how about the shot. I don't need to record the players on the ice.
Timeonice.com, the same guys who deliver us our Corsi stats, takes care of that for me. When I'm done recording all of the scoring chances and formulate all of the tables, I always double check them just in case. Well as I was on my chexpedition, I noticed something very peculiar.
It was in the second period and after a Steve Sullivan scoring chance I noticed that the forward line on the ice was Kyle Okposo, Michael Grabner, and...P.A. Parenteau? So I went back to the tape and sure enough they were all on the ice. That was when the Islanders got called for Too Many Men on the Ice.
Usually when that call is made it's because of a bad change and a player coming off the bench plays the puck before the other player can get off the ice. In this circumstance Parenteau was just a little too overzealous to play and hopped on the ice with the FnGO line.
Frans Nielsen realized it and got back on the bench but a little too late for the refs' liking. It's great to see Grabner stare across the ice at P.A. with a look of "Dude, why are you out here?"
So for one of the rare times during a hockey season, Too Many Men on the Ice rang true and P.A. got to spend two minutes in the box thinking about his blunder.
Without further adieu, here are the scoring chance numbers for last night's game:

The Isles played a pretty even first and third periods with the Penguins, and the second period was a complete snorefest, and even though the Islanders got outchanced, there was really only one or two quality scoring chances in the whole period.
The disappointing numbers have to be from the Andrew MacDonald/Travis Hamonic pairing, getting outchanced by 7 and 6, respectively. Maybe its just me, but I'm starting to think A-Mac isn't 100% healed from his offseason surgery. There were a couple of times yesterday he did his best Mike Mottau imitation and watched a Penguin skate right around him.
Hopefully with time he'll get that step back. Its important for the Isles that he does.

What's funny is
for all our talk of secondary snoring scoring, if we get it, but the top line gets heavily outplayed (as in this game), it probably won’t matter a whole lot.
Tavares is Tavares.
Hopefully by the end of the weekend
I’ll have a table with each players total chances for the year. I wouldnt be at all surprised to see the first line lead the way with the most chances allowed.

Technically EDM is lower at 1.89 GF
NYI, NYR and MIN in a three-way tie for the next slot with 2.00. But I get your point.

Most other teams have played more games, too.

AMac
Maybe its just me, but I’m starting to think A-Mac isn’t 100% healed from his offseason surgery.
Oh I don’t think it’s just you. The maintenance days worried me (but also reassured me; he’s gotta take it carefully). But the play, too. Just bits here and there, showing how the performance spectrum in hockey is a thousand little degrees.
Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.
Not that Im Pro-Mottau in any way
If AMac is still hurting, why not give hime a couple weeks and have Mottau spell him for now. I know its going to leave us with a couple weeks of a grown man making snow angels, but Id rather have a healthy Andrew MacDonald for 65 games than an injured one for another 20 or so.

Hope it doesn't come to that, but I agree
I’ve been thinking they must be evaluating that. Essentially, grilling him hard on whether it’s truly improving or whether he does need some more time off. He really went as long as possible in camp before using it.
Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.
Makes you wonder about the extent
I mean, if the only way to “get it back” is playing, than I’d still rather have him in the lineup over anyone else. If it’s something that needs some rest, I doubt at this point it would be anything more than day to day to get over soreness.
He’s really the best option in my book. Unless he needs multiple days of rest. Given that he played through something that needed this level of surgery and recovery time though, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does need the rest and is just not taking it.

Trade Mottau to BPT
for Wishart. If MacDonald broke both his legs and lost his vision I’d rather have him out there over Mottau. Wishart, on the other hand should be able to spell him for a few games.
BTW: deHaan paired with Wishart tonight. Wishart scores… where’s CayK and a Wishart sucks CaryKu? He is now 8-1-3-4, 9PIM and 0rating playing mostly third pair minutes.
Also, Klementyev replaced by PTO Oleksy . Anybody know if Klem was injured, or a healthy scratch? Olesky, predictably, is in a fight in the game.
LighthouseHockey: We saw this coming!
@JPinVA
Klem has only played 3 games
and apparently had a real difficult time with the Lokomitv plane crash. Really, I think Olson was replaced by ATO Oleksy. I don’t remember hearing anything about a Klementyev injury.

There was an injury at the beginning
A leg or something with Klementyev.
But yeah, I wouldn’t doubt having a bunch of your friends die in a plane you could’ve been on is messing with him. I wish Kabanov or Petrov or Nabby were around down there for him.
Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.
If
de Haan-Wishart is third pair, what are the top two? Ness-Donovan and Reese-Otherguy?
Tavares is Tavares.
Wishart-Reese
or Wishart-Klementyev were getting “third pair” minutes for the most part. deHaan-Wishart shopuld have been getting first pair minutes last night, which would mean that wishart is out of chateau bow-wow.

And this
is where the three goalies is hurting us. Something needs to give with one of them, or Gillies needs to head to BP, because having another dman available would have been huge. Even just for practice purposes (basically the days McDonald sat, there must have not been a partner for Hamonic).
I guess this is mitigated now with Jurcina back, but seems like having someone around the past two weeks would have beneficial.
Tavares is Tavares.
Gillies to BPT
I have a feeling they aren’t going to do that until they are secure in the fact that they don’t need him. It would be a lot safer to pass Rickety through waivers. Not that losing Gillies would be devastating, but his role could not be filled by anybody else in the organization.
Even if that role is mostly walking around the coliseum with a suit on taking pictures with fans of THE STACHE.
Has there even been a significant fight in the first 10th of the season. Maybe Shanny-vision is changing things, and they have gone back to letting these things work themselves out.
He also might be around to work on Nino’s mushy arms…Sorry Francesca, I couldn’t resist.
LighthouseHockey: We saw this coming!
@JPinVA
I’d be surprised if anyone picked Gillies up after TEH INCIDENT that was such a league-wide outrage, but you never know.
DP to BP would be ideal, but I know it’s a pipe dream, so I didn’t bring it up. He’d be a great shootout specialist down there though. Maybe even shootout coach for Poulin.
Nino coming back will force the issue though. I don’t see Mottau going for the reasons above (7 dmen is more of a minimum than a recommendation). Short list to be demoted as of now:
Pandolfo
Gillies
Rolston
Tavares is Tavares.

I cannot possibly fathom how having four goalies in Bridgeport would in your opinion be “ideal”.
