No Volek?!?!

Kind of a key guy in that whole run.

Also, no Tom Fitzgerald, scorer of two shorties on a single PK against the Pens.

Tavares is Tavares.

And Green had a pretty good run when he got bounced up a line

To be fair

The organization pissed off a lot of ex-players over the years

No volek though?

I can sort of understand Healy and Green, but there’s guys who are missing that makes no sense.

Season Ticket Holder Meetup

As per the e-mail from the team, there will be a meetup with some members of the 92-93 team.

“This Saturday, October 29th we will be celebrating our 1992–93 Conference Finals team with a pre-game ceremony, just before our 7:00 p.m. game vs. the San Jose Sharks. Prior to the game, as part of the pre-game festivities, we have secured members of the 1992-93 team for an exclusive subscriber meet and greet. Several players, including Pierre Turgeon, Pat Flatley, and Darius Kasparaitis, will be signing autographs in the Expo Hall at Nassau Coliseum from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A complimentary 1992-93 team collage will be available at this event. In addition, the team store will be open starting at noon for your convenience to purchase additional memorabilia to be signed. For this event please enter through the main box office entrance. Due to pre-game scheduling, this event will end promptly at 5:30 p.m.”

If anyone is attending the game and would like me to try and get extra people in, we can plan a place to meet for this. Should I create a new fan shot for this?

Usually Dom posts the game previews early, you can always make it the first comment, or talk to Dom about mentioning it in the preview.

Sure, post a FanShot

Offering any meetup friendliness you’re game for. I’ll try to remember to link to it in the preview as well.

I wonder

looking at it again, if the players in the picture are going to actually be there. Doubtful, but it could make sense.

Also, from an interview with Kasparitis about 93:

The Islanders will honor the 1992-93 Patrick Division Champions on Saturday, Oct. 29 when the Isles faceoff against the San Jose Sharks at 7 p.m.

Why are they trying to revive this? They weren’t the Patrick Division champions. Just seems stupid to go down that road again.

huh?

They were Patrick Division champs, there’s even banners for teams that were Patrick division champs and the Islanders had one for the 93 team that disappeared.

The old playoffs before Bettman were based on the division. So it was 1 Vs 4 and 2 vs 3 based on division seeding, and then the winners of those two matchups would face off in the next round for the division championship. At the time the Conference Championships were actually matchups of the division champions.

Pretty sure

the other banners are for winning the Patrick Division in the regular season. The NHL didn’t award banners for winning the divisional playoffs.

That’s why they had to give it away take that one down. It wasn’t legit.

I was under the impression teams did both

If not, there were a lot of surplus/illegit banners around the league.

Yup, Im sure there have been plenty of both.

The '93 banner always stuck out from the rest

It said “Patrick Playoff Champions.” It was the only banner that celebrated winning a PLAYOFF division. If they had done it before ‘93, they sure didn’t raise a banner for it.

That being said, I loved the banner and wished it had remained in the rafters.

I personally think its bad luck to remove a banner completely. I mean, the team has not done anything since. Three personal trophies, yes- and winning contests at the ASG, things like that- but the TEAM itself has not done anything since the very moment that banner represents. I think even if they just had it back in the building it would be a good thing for the organization.

I think

as far as the Isles go, it’s regular season. For example, 87-88 they won the regular season, but not the playoffs-there is a banner. Conversely, 79-80 they won the playoffs, not the regular season-no banner.

I don’t know what lesser teams do, but the Isles seem to do playoffs only.

No Kinger?

Derek King was not one of my faves but he was a solid scorer there for the isles in the early 90’s.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
