Bridgeport and Prospect Roundup 10/23

Just like their parent club, Bridgeport is struggling wildly with inconsistency. There are some bright spots early though, as Justin DeBendetto is second in the AHL in goals and the team is 3-4 after 7 games. Jeremy Colliton continues his solid minor league career as he is averaging a point per game, 2 goals and 3 assists in 5 games. The struggles though are coming from surprising sources, as Kevin Poulin has posted back to back sub .800 SV% games. Meanwhile the teams veteran players, Trevor Frischmon (-5), Dylan Reese (-6) and Tim Wallace (-6) are among the worst on the team in +/- (along with Matt Donovan's -6).

Bridgeport Vs Adirondack (Philly) Oct 16 2011

Not much to say here, as Adirondack routed BP 4-1. David Ullstrom scored the lone goal unassisted. Kevin Poulin gave up 5 goals on 23 shots. If the Islanders specialty is making backup goalies look like superstars, then BP's specialty is making washed up NHL goalies look amazing as Micheal Leighton made 25 saves on 26 shots. Ty Wishart finished the game +1, while Calvin De Haan was -3.

Bridgeport Vs St Johns (Winnipeg) Oct 21 2011

Dibo traded goals early on with St Johns as the 1st ended tied 2-2 (including Jason Gregoire's first pro goal).  Dibo was assisted by Sean Backman on the first goal and De Haan/Wishart on the second goal. After Anders Nilsson (33 shots, 30 saves) gave up the go ahead goal less then a minute into the 3rd, David Ullstrom (Chris Langkow, Colliton) scored with under 3 minutes to go to force overtime. Colliton (De Haan, Aaron Ness) scored the game winner in OT for the 4-3 win. Colliton was named 1st star, Dibo named 3rd star.

Bridgeport Vs St Johns Oct 22 2011

Tough night for Kevin Poulin as he got the hook after giving up 4 goals on 15 shots. His replacement was Mikko Kosikinen who had a strong outing turning away 19 shots as BP tried to claw their way back into the game. Tyler McNeely scored his first goal of the year in the first with assists from Casey Cizikas and Wallace. Matt Donovan notched his first with 1 second left in the 2nd assisted by Colliton. Ullstrom scored the final goal assisted by Reese as BP fell 4-3

Star-divide

The Natural Born Kirills

Quiet week for Kirill Petrov as he scored 1 goal in 3 games putting him at 7 goals and 3 assists for 10 points in 13 games. He is 1 goal away from matching last years total.

Even quieter week for Kirill Kabanov who still hasn't played in a game yet for his new team, the Shawinigan Cataractes. His number is listed as 999 on the QMJHL website, which would be amusing to see. [How to pronounce Kirill Kabanov]

The CHL

The Niagra IceDogs had 2 games this week, beating Ottawa 4-1 [Video] and Plymouth 4-0. Mitchell Theoret had a goal in the first game while Ryan Strome had an assist in each game. Theoret has 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points in 11 games while Strome has 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points in 5 games.

Andrey Pedan played one game for the Guleph Storm this week notching a PPG and a +1. In 8 games he has 3 goals, 1 assist for 4 points and a +1.

John Persson played 3 games for the Red Deer Rebels and had an assist in the first two games. In 10 games he has 3 goals, 7 assists for 10 points.

In 2 games this week for the Spokane Chiefs Brenden Kitchon had 1 assist and a +2. He has 1 goal and 6 assists for 7 points in 10 games and an even +/-

The NCAA

Notre Dame had one game this week against Rensselaer winning 5-2 on the back of an Anders Lee hat trick. Robbie Russo was held off the scoresheet. In 5 games Russo has 2 assists. Anders Lee currently leads the NCAA in goals with 8 and is tied with the lead in points 11 with teammate TJ Tynan and Erik Haulu of Minnesota.[Highlights from 10/14 game vs Ohio State]

North Dakota dropped back to back games to Wisconsin, 5-3 and 5-4. While Brock Nelson was quiet in the first game, only notching a -1, he had a goal (in the final minute) and 2 assists in the 5-4 loss. In 6 games he has 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points in 6 games. Jason Clark did not play for Wisconsin.

Of note on Jason Clark, for those wondering why he's been healthy scratched. Found this on The Islanders Informer at KuklasKorner "Through email correspondence last week, Andy Baggot of the Wisconsin State Journal told me the following: "Spoke with Mike Eaves a few minutes ago. He said that while Jason is 100 percent healthy to practice, he’s roughly two weeks behind everyone else in terms of conditioning. Eaves said once Clark closes that gap he’ll be in the mix."

Denver followed up a 4-2 win over Minnesota State with a 10-2 rout of Minnesota State. Scott Mayfield was pointless in the first game and posted a goal in the second game. In 4 games Mayfield has 1 goal and 1 assist. [Get to know Scott Mayfield]

Boston U dropped their game this weekend to Holy Cross 5-4. Corey Trivino notched 2 assists and now has 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points in 4 games. [Lots of Corey Trivino/Boston U Vids]

Cody Rosen did not play this weekend. [Rosen at Prospect Camp Via 7th Woman]

SEL

Johan Sundstrom added a goal this week and now has a goal and assist in 14 games for Frolunda.

Jesse Joensuu didn't play a game this week due to injury. [Interview] [interview]

Just a little bit of news, for those who like the prospect roundup, we will from now on be making every attempt to post this update first thing Sunday morning.

Nelson

It seems to me that he is scoring very well when playing wing, and not so much when he is playing center. I will try to look up game sheets to see if they indicate where he was playing on a given night, but from what I understand, the majority of his points (I think at least 6 of the 7) have come on the wing.

Even more annoying than that is that he’s playing LW.

That explains a lot, was wondering why he was so up and down on the scoring sheets

Web-tastic...

I really look forward to these, MD…or can I call you DOC?
Mayfield is way too happy to be in the NHL. I think college is more about that than getting them ready for the day to day grind of NHL hockey. He needs to walk into the “coat” room at a kegger and see his girlfriend taking on the “special teams” unit from the football team.
That’s how you become Chris Pronger.
I think Bridgeport will start to transition shortly. It’s going to take some time for Thompson to get all of the kids on the same page. Much like Gordon’s first season when it was the blind leading the blind, and forcing a lot of round pegs into square holes. Hopefully Thompson rounds out some of the holes, while squaring off the pegs, and they meet somewhere in the middle. That defense is going to be a handful until they learn how to play DEFENSE. Without Wotto, Wishart weighs woefully (that didn’t start out that way, but I had to give it a shot). What might help is a guy like Mottau helping them learn. I think trading Ullstrom or Dibo for Pandolfo helps both clubs as well.

agree that it’ll take some time, although it is worrying that Poulin is struggling.

Hopefully he doesn’t copy the maddening WTF? part of Johnson’s game. I’ll take just about any part of Pronger’s.

DiBo must be close to being called up. Could really use a player with his abilities at the moment.

Wonder if the 10-game mark or so will be the first re-eval period

Or after the Penguins series maybe. I figure they want Gillies through the Pens game, but after that there’s a run of teams where, except for Boston, I don’t see a lot potential Gillies-level policing needs.

Poulin's problems

Are his troubles related to his knee-cap injury for last year?

I haven’t seen him play yet, wouldn’t be surprised

Off topic question

I missed most of the game last night, but eventually convinced the barback to put the game on. When he did, I saw the trail end of a play: One of our forwards (RW?) fired a wicked wrister off a rush from the high circle area. Theodore got a piece but the puck just missed trickling in the opposite post. Didnt see a replay, Was that Okposo?

Question

Are there any restrictions with call ups/demotions like there are with baseball? Or can they do what ever they want?

Stainer of mountaintops.

by Chairman Meow on Oct 23, 2011 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

There are a number of restrictions

Whether a guy has an NHL contract (some guys have AHL-only contracts and cannot get called up), whether a guy needs to go through waivers or not (which depends on age, # of GP, etc), the # of guys you can have in a game at one time, many things like that.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

by TheMetalChick on Oct 23, 2011 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Generally
  • You can have 23 healthy guys on the roster at one time
  • More experienced/older guys are more likely to require clearing waivers (formula TMC alluded to)
  • After a guy clears waivers, you have flexibility with him for 10 games or 30 games (i.e. you can make a move with him without resubmitting him to waivers)

It’s annoying complex, and those three barely scratch the surface, but those are the main points.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
