Islanders Bits: 'He's Johnny Tavares, you know?'

You call it jazz hands, I call it my Zorro pose.

Last night John Tavares leaped healthy scratch Blake Comeau and retired ex-Isles Kenny Jonsson, and Bryan Smolinski for a 46th-place tie on the Islanders all-time goal list with 58.

The Enigma Oleg Kvasha is next in his sights, and two-time 30-goal scorer Matt Moulson is only five goals ahead.

That and other news in our Sunday links...

Tons of coverage of the win over the Rangers:

Happy victory-savoring Sunday. Come back later for prospect talk.

I’ll ruin the secret a little bit, we can write posts and then schedule them to run at any time. For example I actually did the prospect post following the Islanders game last night for once, instead of waiting to do it this morning. It’s scheduled to go, but I couldn’t sleep last night anyway and I’m still up now. Most likely I’ll be awake when it runs, wondering why I can’t sleep.

pretty sure we all agreed

That it was most likely one of those “Scratch Comeau and hope it gives him a kick in the ass” moments. People forget that Grabner and Parenteau had some early scratches last season too.

yeah, this

Although I don’t think thoughts about Comeau’s situation initiated this. They mainly wanted to have Gillies in and Comeau then was the logical choice to take out. Martin, Pandolfo, Rolston and of course the others all play in less replaceable roles or have just contributed more. Comeau really hasn’t contributed at all thus far, he’s no factor on the PP, not a key one on the PK and has struggled on RW at EV. But I guess he’ll be back in against Tampa and if it goes ok also against Florida.

when was the last time?

When was the last time the Islanders had more power play chances than the Rangers, excluding chances after the game became a foregone conclusion? When was the last time we got 4 more chances than the other team at all? This is all good stuff – it means the islanders are not being considered the league’s trash by the referees. Maybe the Islanders start getting favorable calls. Or maybe it just means the Rangers stopped getting very favorable treatment, at least for one night.

I'm not so sure ...

the choice to sit Comeau as opposed to anyone else in order to dress Gilles is so innocuous. I’m not guessing it means any imminent, but if he was the ‘logical’ choice on this roster to sit, I think it says a lot about a couple of things.
Matt Martin is slowly but surely becoming an important cog in this machine. He has no goals and obviously isn’t gonna be a scoring machine, but he doesn’t have to in order to fill a key role and really help this team. If I am correct, the coach put Martin out there immediately after each Islander goal. I think that also says a lot.

by dose on Oct 16, 2011 9:32 AM EDT reply actions

Martin Has Really Improved

His skating has gotten better, he knows where to go on the ice and what to do when he gets there. And some of those shots he’s taking will eventually start to go in. I thought he and Bailey played well together both cycling the puck and in the defensive zone.

Martin will never be the offensive player Comeau is capable of being. But Comeau remains, after four years, a very undisciplined player in terms of playing within a system. I really don’t think he’s long for this team.

look, it’s one thing to look bad and for it to be obvious. Sure we expect offense from Bailey’s line, but the reality is that not giving up goals is just as good as scoring goals.

Errr, I think Snow sees things how they are.

It makes sense to give him this year to figure things out – next year nothing’s guaranteed (and having another year on his deal at a cheap rate makes it easy to trade him even if he does have two more RFA years afterwards)

Bailey's line is not getting any offensesivel zone starts, while leading team in defensive zone starts

i am seeing improvement in Bailey…I’m seeing improvement in Martin too, but it is worth noting, Martin’s line isn’t getting defensive zone starts, and unlike his line mates, Martin isn’t used on the PK

by CanadianIsleslifer on Oct 16, 2011 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Martin: SH TOI/gm 41secs.

I know what you mean though. He’s definitely not relied on for defense yet, which isn’t a bad thing at this point in his career given his potential/age/development.

I’m not going to knock Bailey, but if he doesn’t pick up his O this year, there is a problem. “Mediocre” “3rd line” “checking centers” that play against 3rd line competition and put up 25-30pts a year are a somewhat common commodity. That said, his QofComp looks to have gone up so far, let’s see if cappy keeps it that way or not(or if this is because of stats skewing the beginning of the season). Comeau on the other hand, looks perfectly fine imo on the 3rd line, especially if he is given better quality linemates(ala Rolston) to play with.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

BPT Highlight P/M

This one was quite interesting.
+ David Ullstrom breaks thea seal with a really nice goal…
+ Poulin too many snow angels in the highlights, but some nice saves for a guy coming off knee surgery.
- 4 goals, mostly with the deHaan or Donovan on the ice… and this is why they’re there.
+ Ness is the fourth SO option, and makes a nice dangle. I’d have never thoguht that the best D in BPT would be the small and nearly invisible kid out of the Minn program.
- Ty Wishart scores his first and everybody acts like he just farted…. something is going on there. He is most likely the most NHL ready D in the nest, and he is getting no love at all.

Strange thing about Wishart though

is it looks like he’s on the 3rd pairing there…I would really have no idea what level of competition he is going up against in the AHL. That D looks pretty weak and porous though. They can’t just be leaving people alone or merely stick checking them when they are in the crease.

Wishart

he has a nice shot and this is promising for the Cappy game of the get the puck on net (which the COZOman is in last place on – 1 shot in 3 games = epic fail)

Wishart is relatively young and one suspects they are waiting for him to show a consistent game and more than anything else a consistent urgency that his game has lacked to date

there’s no way they placed him on the 5-6 pairing because he’s been impressive in that context, a few offensive highlights not withstanding

someone with talent and potential who doesn’t have the consistent desire & drive needs to learn that somehow – so the current approach makes sense – no reason to question anything this organization is doing these days – clicking on all cylinders

Wishart celebration

I thought he was just trying to seek out DiBo for work well done screening in front of the net, so the first two were ancillary to the celebration. If you notice on the next goal involving Wishart, where DiBo (I think) does get the credit for the tip, he makes a b-line out to Wishart for putting on the tippable shot.

This Whining About the Penalties Last Night is Utter Nonsense

Every one one of those penalties was legit, including Callahan making absolutely no attempt whatsoever to avoid running over Nabokov, and Boyle staying down on his knees in the corner for what seemed like forever making repeated attempts to cover the puck with his hands despite being told by the official to knock it off.

In the third period, Prust even skated by Nabokov right after a whistle and elbowed Nabokov’s head, but being late in the game the official only gave him a lecture.

I can see them complaing about Callahan's penalty and I can see the refs calling it

They have no chance of convincing me that Boyle didn’t desereve his penalty though. that was pretty flagrant.

I think they’re upset because in the past we usually woudln’t get the calls from the refs, and maybe they see the thing turning a bit now, and are worried JT might get the respect from the refs other superstars get.

the only penalty in question

was Boyle’s – and he WAS delaying the game with his antics

Callahan bulldozed right into Nabby – no Islander touched him

no way they don’t call that

stupid Ranger announcers were like ‘how could they call that, would could Callahan have done?’

how about NOT bulldoze straight into the keeper – take a slight angle so you don’t plow right into him

pretty valid point

Every one one of those penalties was legit, including Callahan making absolutely no attempt whatsoever to avoid running over Nabokov

I disagreed with Butchie there too. It has always been my assumption that unless a guy is PUSHED into the goaltender he makes the choice to end up between the pipes. PENALTY… no questions asked.
Butchie says, “where is callahan supposed to go?”
I say… he makes that descision two strides before you start wondering, “where is callahan supposed to go”. I might have given AMAC a trip, but if that’s not a trip, then Callahan has to go for the duece. When you go HARD TO THE NET, you actually need to go hard to the left of the left post, or the right of the right post… not between them.

The Callahan interference

I love how if a player decides, for whatever reason, to skate full steam into the boards with the puck and give himself a concussion, he’s an idiot. But if he does the same into the goalie while trying to score the defense — including Goring’s last night — is “What was he supposed to do?!”

Here’s what you’re supposed to do: Know how to skate like an expert, or else don’t try what you cannot finish, or else accept the penalty consequences when you screw up. And be grateful no one takes your head off for putting their goalie at risk. It’s that simple.

You don’t get a pass. That’s how goalies get knocked out.

It's funny to read the debates on Blueshirt Banter about the penalties.

You have a few guys that are staunchly saying they are all “real” nhl called penalties in today’s game and you have a few guys that refuse to believe anything other then that the refs were one-sided that night. It’s really hilarious but great to know that there are some level headed ranger fans out there like George. lol

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Oct 17, 2011 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Do you really expect anything else? While the Boyle call was technically correct, it’s not like he was the first guy to fall on a puck repeatedly trying to slow play down. It’s understandable that there’s a level of disbelief that it was actually called.

As it is, I don’t think anyone believes it was one-sided (ok, maybe a few do), but that there were some calls that were a bit soft. The Rangers have gone through it for 3 games now, so there’s some increased frustration. Fact is they’re a lot of lazy penalties that are probably the result of playing on the bigger ice in Europe, which developed crappy habits and work patterns that have carried over.

I’ve seen plenty of LHH guys argue that the refs are out to get you. I think it’s in the 10 commandments of fandom: Thou must blame the officials when all else fails.

Oh yeah, I agree. It's just funny to read it as an outsider. I rarely read other postgame blogs from other teams.

I think the problem for you guys isn’t penalties(which is part of it), it’s mostly forward lines gelling and your injuries killing your blue line. Staal is a big loss, and now Sauer only piles on. That’s really rough to live with, especially for a team starting “slow” like you guys.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

by OzzyFan on Oct 17, 2011 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh I get it, obviously I read alot of post game reactions around SBN because it’s entertaining.

I don’t know if the forwards need to gel, the top 9 is basically intact except for swapping Prospal for Richards. They should be used to be other by now. The penalties take a dual toll. It obviously takes you out of offensive situations, and it screws up your ES lines while you try to get back to establishing a rhythm. For example, Callahan and Dubinsky killing penalties together screws up Anisimov at ES, where he’s ready and his linemates aren’t.

Staal’s a massive loss. The brightside is that it has ‘forced’ them to play Erixon, who I think everyone knew was ready for at least 3rd pair minutes, but they wanted to bring him in slow. If/when Staal/Sauer return, they’ll probably be stronger on D because of it. The thing is, how big a hole do they have to climb out of then.

They’re still a plus at 5v5 play so far, and have lost to three playoff-caliber teams. The air-raid sirens can go off if they lose to Winnipeg and Edmonton.

That’s what happened to the Isles last year with Amac and Hamonic. Amac was slated back to Bridgeport for some reason (I guess because we picked up Eaton, Mottau and Jurcina and Gervais and Hillen were theoretically ahead of them on the depth chart?!?!?! Amac may have been hurt in the early stages too, I cant remember). Isles are a far better team for it.

George, you not that unusual, typical band wagon fan

no offense intended…when Isles are at the top again, you’ll be cheering for them…but on that note, not to cheer for your own local club (even if you keep your loyality to your first team) is a dangerous way to go. If too many ppl think like that, it really doesn’t make a lot of sense to let them have their own NHL club in their community. If Oilers fans reacted the same way, Alberta would have been down to one team a long time ago.

yep that's life

and it is a big indicator of whether or not a city should have a second team/or, if its residents even want another team. Not criticizing your choices, bandwagon fans make up a major portion of all sports fans…following Isles while they were on top, cheering for Oilers when they were, come on now, if that team sucked you’d probably never have followed them…and the Rangers in 94? For me, I personally love to follow the teams that build…that to me is what a real team is, not just the players on the ice. I think a sport is in huge trouble when teams can just buy a championship, and not to dis your team, but they literally bought that 94 cup. That is one major reason for a salary cap. A sport can’t survive if the 5 or 6 richest are allowed to buy their way there, pricing the rest of the league out of the market. Every fan needs to believe their team has a fair shot to win. I get that it is talking into the wind when it is your own team doing the buying…this is why I went from a die hard baseball fan to one who hasn’t even watched a game in 2 or 3 years…Teams like the Yankees have ruined baseball and made it boring. Like watching communist Soviet Hockey where the best players were always on Red Army…of course they always won in Russian league. I’m not a New Yorker, but I do get the Rangers are the older team thing, like the Leafs here…but I don’t support the Leafs b/c frankly, anyone with that team’s revenues can buy their players. Nothing exciting about that. Yet, outside of the Cliff Fletcher years, the Leafs have sucked since 1967…and other than 1994, the Rangers have been a bad to moderate team for 60 plus years…I guess if the Rangers had actually built a team and had the success of the Isles or Red Wings I would get it…hope I didn’t offend you, I just don’t get it…but you must like the Isles on some level, even if their not your favourite team b/c you do follow them a lot, on here at least. Cheers

No offense taken.

I was between 2-6 years old when the Isles won their cups, which is before my hockey exposure really started. You’ll note the Isles stuff I posted was after the cup years when I was first picking up the sport. That’s what I was exposed to. It’s fine if you want to believe I jumped teams, I don’t begrudge that opinion. You’ll also note I said I picked up the Rangers for good in 1991 (Messier trade), not 94. Sure, had the Bruins won at the time instead of the Oilers, I can’t say I wouldn’t have picked them up instead (b/c of Neely), and would’ve stayed with them as Neely was never traded.

I am on here a lot these days, but it’s almost always when I start seeing Rangers conversations that I feel could use the other perspective. Obviously, the thread after a Rangers game keeps me around, as have the conversations that have followed. I stay because you guys, beyond the seething Rangers hate, are actually one of the better sites for discussion.

Maybe it’s a NY thing.

I can honestly say I was a Ranger fan before I was an Islander fan.

But in my defense, the Islanders didn’t exist yet. SO I did switch allegiance as well, but I was also still a child, so opinions and taste can change.

However, what I do hold against you is that as you matured and formed an adult opinion, you chose the Rangers! Just kidding of course since I have blood relatives that are Ranger fans ( I just don’t talk to them about hockey).

As for money buying championships – see Leafs, Toronto Maple. I have more of a problem with a team that makes a lot of money selling fans high priced tickets and then low balling the team payroll.

by Hockey1919 on Oct 18, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

that makes sense george

i got into the islanders at the end of their rebuild as a young kid, and then the started winning…that team dominated the game in every aspect…the love affair is still there…up here, you see a lot of ppl support yankees (mostly outside of toronto area, or non-jays fans to begin with), but you don’t see anything even remotely close with the rangers. I would even hazard a guess, outside of a team’s own market, the leading sales in team merchandise and ticket revenue from out of town teams, you would see US teams like the Flyers, Wings, even the Hawks and Bruins (before the won the cup this summer) right up at the top. the rangers, albeit an original 6 team, probably not…what i remember them best for is rather foolishly taking other team’s contractual mistakes…you overpay someone, no problem, the rangers will always take them…this is one way i think the salary cap actually improved the rangers, can’t afford to do that anymore…they did have some good goalies, like johnny vanB, richter, leetch wasn’t my kinda guy, too soft…rons gresner and duguay who could skate like the wind…barry beck was a physical d…just never really were ever able to draft and put a top level contender together other than buying old oilers for that one and only cup in 94…without a doubt, the top team in the NewYork area since the 1975-93 Islanders, excluding the rangers 94 cup, it been all devils…clearly top team in NewYork area, but ever sooo boring to watch.

I didn't see what Boyle did

but it sounds like he covered (huddled over the puck to protect it) which is smart and you usually get away with it. BUT, I’ve always hated playing against guys who do that in the game and feel like there should be more calls for delay or something when it happens.

The problem is, once a guy is down like that, about the only thing you can do to get the puck is cross check him or hit him to get him away. You can’t use your skates or stick out of fear of getting a penalty or hurting the guy severely (well, I guess you could, but it seems shitty).

And a guy as big as Boyle is going to be hard to move anyway even if you do push or cross check him.

And yes, it is nice so far that we appear to be getting some calls. Is anyone doing anything that tracks the penalty rates of the teams that played in Europe once they get back to playing on NHL surfaces? That could be interesting to see if it’s across the board or just a couple of the teams. The Europe thing has been going on for a couple of years now right?

I nominate you.

Actually, I’m not sure how many teams actually played preseason games against the European teams on those trips. Unless I’m mistaken, the other three this year that went over there didn’t do so.

(That was an amen to your point, btw)

The other penalty, Boyle’s delay: He was clearly warned. The refs gave him a leash, “Hey, you’re taking advantage of these players’ human empathy and resistance to spearing your eyeball out because you insist on keeping the puck on the ice, near your face, with your hand. The gig is up. Play hockey or take a penalty/lose an eye — whichever comes first.”

the ref must have said all of that verbatim

because it did take 17 seconds for the ref to blow the whistle.

Afterwards, Boyle was yapping because he wanted to take a chance with the eye.

by Isles2011 on Oct 16, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

What is the technical wording on the "delay of game" penalty?

He was called for “delay of game,” right? Hardly ever see it called, but it seems when you are down on all fours, you have to make an effort to move the puck, right? Whereas, if a player is upright, he can pin the puck along the boards as long as he wants, right? Or as long as he moves it a little? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it called when a player was upright.

It does seem there is inconsistency with these types of calls.

What was he trying to gain by playing patty cake with the puck. If he moves the puck to a teammate it’s a hand pass anyway.

by IslesinAZ on Oct 16, 2011 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Not in the d-zone, you are allowed to hand pass in your defensive zone.

And he was trying to eat PK time up. Obviously he was “delaying the game” though one way or another and deserved the penalty.

by OzzyFan on Oct 17, 2011 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

It reminds me of when Roloson got a delay of game for stopping the puck when the ref told him to play it.

If the ref tells you to play the puck, you cannot ignore him and cover it or shuffle it around back and forth with your hands, you will get a penalty mainly for ignoring them.

Most penalties are quite intuitive, too

It’s like when they claimed the NHL made up a separate rule mid-series for Sean Avery. No, no they didn’t. They clarified and warned. You can call it unsportsmanlike conduct, you can call it high-sticking (there is no reason for you to have your stick up in someone’s face. Ever.), you can call it interference, or you can call it just plain being a sideshow (okay I made that one up).

There is no explicit rule against taking a crap on someone at center ice, but I’m pretty sure that’s covered, too.

That Potvin Sucks Chant Has Really Gotten Tiresome

It was constant last night. In the building, on the concourse, in the parking lot, from mental deficients who don’t even know who Denis Potvin is. These people are like young children who just learned a curse word and have to keep repeating it. The bleatings of sheep.

IMHO, it is high time we as Islanders pick a former Ranger (Leetch? Messier? Graves?) and even the score. That’s stupid, it’s childish, I know. But these people need a response to show just how stupid THEY are.

The bigger problem for me

Is that there are far, far too many Rags fans at NVMC for these games. We shouldn’t be hearing any pro-Rags or anti-Hall of Fame defensemen chants in our barn. I understand that their team is on the road for a long while to start the season, but this invasion is nothing new. It’s embarrassing – I had to explain to a non-hockey watching NBA fan yesterday why all you saw on TV were Rags jerseys.

With that said, I have no excuse for being one of the many Islanders fans who made no effort to get to this game. This team, if healthy, is a legitimate playoff team. It’s time to to start filling the building again!

Awesome speech, my fellow fan...

but I can’t join you on this, and here is why:

1 – you are blatantly copying them, and thus validating their silly chant
2 – you would be showing them, in essence, that it gets to you, and then it’s back to the whole validation thingy

If we instead take their clearly audible whistles, and make it into something positive, like “Potvin’s Cups!”, or “Four Straight Cups!”, then we are in my eyes taking it over, making it our own, and drowning out their own patented hate-cry with our glorious celebration of historic success, all the while showing no hint of being affected by their ballbreaking. What say you?

Somewhat true, but once again missing a side.
Like any championship team, the Rangers picked up a lot of bandwagon fans and lapsed fans when they won their last Stanley Cup. What I think we’re seeing at the Coliseum now are the children of those people, who have been inundated with stories from that spring and believe that 1994 was last year and that the Rangers are just one or two Oilers away from another Cup. Instead of the reality which is that 1994 was 16 years, several missed playoffs and a ten tons of wasted money ago.

This is definitely true….but a lot of it is also that for many younger people on the Island, especially kids, it is EASIER to get to MSG than the Coliseum. So they become Rangers fans, not Isles fans. Location Location Location.

a lot of my friends that are Rangers fans

didn’t do it because of location, in fact they might have even seen more games at the Coliseum. They basically are Ranger fans because they are the New York City team.

I don’t know that the Milbury years helped us either, it’s tough to convince my more casual sports fan friends to get into it. I’ve taken a few to games before, I’m going to try to get them more into it again this year.

Its very very easy to get to both Met and Yankee games from Westchester. The Coliseum is not the bad

either. Its only 35 mins from southern Westchester. Citi Field is only 20 minutes from southern westchester. Yankee stadium is easier to get to without a car because there’s a Metro North stop there. Citi Field means taking Metro North to Grand Central and then the #7 subway, a much longer trip. By car there’s very little difference.

My problem with Ranger fans who live on LI is:

Everyone in the area benefits from the presence of a professional sports team/large arena where you can get premium sporting, music, and entertainment events. That is just the tangible benefit of having the Islanders here, which doesn’t go into what it does for the local economy or charitable organizations. When people who live locally choose not to support that then it hurts the community at large. When you support a team like the Rangers you’re putting money into New York City, away from where you choose to live. Especially in what is considered a small market, it goes beyond supporting a particular team, but is about having pride in your community.

by ArsenalLI on Oct 16, 2011 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

That sounds awesome on paper.

What you’re effectively implying though is that the reason the Coliseum doesn’t sell out is because there are too many Rangers fans on Long Island not supporting the team. There are well more than ~18k Islanders fans that should be able to help fill that arena nightly, yet don’t.

That’s not even mentioning that the support of a local arena expands well beyond hockey fandom, as we just saw with the whole Coliseum vote thing. Plus of course, as I already noted, supporting the Rangers doesn’t mean that I don’t/won’t go to the Coliseum and put money into that area, and I’m quite sure I’m not alone in that regard.

To me, this argument is like getting angry at people from Long Island that commute into the city for the nightlife on weekends instead of hitting a local bar.

The larger the fanbase the better for the Islanders

I’ll use Arsenal as an example because apparently you’re a supporter as well. They recently raised ticket prices this year in order to continue competing with the Man United’s of the world (since we can’t keep up with their commercial revenue, due to our leveraging deals to get the Emirates built.) This however, would not have been possible without having a waiting list for season tickets of about 40,000 people. Sure do the Isles have enough of a fan base we should be able to sell out the Coliseum on a nightly basis? Yes, maybe in a great economic climate we do, but even with that I’m not sure we have a large enough one to have premium ticket prices, or sell out when things aren’t great. The Rangers can pretty much sell out even when you guys sucks. Any time you have a fan pick the Rangers over the Isles that’s less in both commercial and ticket sales for the franchise. Particularly in a “small market” like the Isles you need to have the local community behind the team. While you may still spend money at the Coliseum, it’s not as much as you would be spending if you were an Isles fan.

You can argue that maybe there isn’t a large enough market for the Isles with the Rangers in town (which I think we both realize isn’t true) but my point is that anytime you have a Ranger fan from LI that takes away from potential revenue which goes back into the local community. This does tie into the arena issue in that some of us would like to see LI turn into a place once again where people are proud to live instead of LI just being a place that’s somewhat near NYC. I’m not saying all Ranger fans are like this but it seems to be a trend I’ve found.

P.S. I also don’t agree with the NYC bar comparison because there isn’t the same nightlife on LI, whereas hockey is essentially the same product.

It's more to do with location though, in the selling of seats.

“Tons” of casual fans every year go to see the rangers as a borderline playoff team or worse because it’s right in NYC, it’s easy to walk to, easy to subway to, and is heavier populated. Tons of casual isles fans don’t got to NVMC to see the isles because we are in a “somewhat” eastern part of Long Island, have no mass transportation to get to it, and it is less populated/mile (also, somewhat game start time is a hassle because of location). Not to mention, NYC has millions of people all around while “most” of the people that go to the coliseum to watch games are either within a half hour of it or west of it.

All this “should” change though if the isles move/build somewhere on LI that has mass transit and is closer to the city. Moving to Suffolk is gonna hurt attendance even more unless we are repeat cup contenders. Moving to Brooklyn or Queens near/with a train station right next to it, Brooklyn is better, solves that problem. That’s my 2 cents.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

I’ve never seen any installment of the Star Wars franchise, so I only vaguely know what you’re implying.

Yeah, I was never a true Isles fan. Going back to that LaFontaine game, I remember not really caring who won, it was more about shunning bedtime at 9 years old. I’m still an immense sucker for multiple overtime games, and have gone to work comatose because the Canucks or Sharks played a 3OT home game.

If there was any team I was truly a fan of back then, it was the Oilers. Much like Dom has his affinity for the Blues, the Oilers are still my second team.

This is what will always pull me in

Ha, I need a sign on my door keeping track of how many hours of lost or diminished productivity have been the result of multiple OT games. I can’t stay away. I have memories of watching them with my dad. The LaFontaine Easter Epic was the first significant one after I’d told my parents I don’t demand much, but I demand to no longer be sent to bed before a playoff OT game is over.

lol, such awesome demands from a kid.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

Doubtful
also that for many younger people on the Island, especially kids, it is EASIER to get to MSG than the Coliseum. So they become Rangers fans, not Isles fans.

Pretty sure everyone’s loyalties are in place long before they’re allowed to take the train to MSG by themselves for a game.

Tavares is Tavares.

The Islanders are the NHL's all time leader in Potvins

That’s the only reason I can think of for trading Bryan Berard for that stiff Felix.

Awesome Night

Even my local paper acknowledged the dominance of JT in their game recap, which is a big step(for my local paper, they know nothing about hockey). It was nice to hear the “Let’s go Islanders” chants ring through out the building. All of the excitement even blurred part of the memory of the horrid powerplay. Hopefully that will be patched before they are on the road.

What the Pens playing 9 games while us, NYR and NJD only play 4 and PHI 5?

Is that to our advantage or there? The more games they play without Crosby the better? Are they being set up for a long rest midway through the season or burning themselves out early?

by 54_Fighting on Oct 16, 2011 2:10 PM EDT reply actions

NYR is thanks to Europe (early start, week off after coming back)

But so much is matching arena availability with team requests with what works for the traveling team. The Blues have a bizarre California, then Philadelphia, then Calgary sequence.

You can look at the schedules in a lot of different ways, but by a few of them the Isles have a better schedule this year: Fewer back-to-backs and more where the opponent is on the second of back-to-backs.

I like Isles having less games in October

More time to practice and rest the muscles, which aren’t quite used to this much intensity this time of year. But with JT this hot, I kinda wish they played this coming Tuesday.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Oct 16, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it's ok now, but not so much fun later

Down the stretch the Isles’ schedule looks extremely busy and rather road-heavy. In March and in April combined they’ll play 19 games in 38 days (4 times back-to-back nights, 4 times 3 games in 4 nights). And 13 of the final 21 games are away (despite 4 of the final 6 being at home).

That Ullstrom goal was good in BPT highlights

Shrugged off a check and finished nicely.

If Isles need a little more physicality in the bottom-6, Ullstrom should be towards the top of the list for call-ups.

Anybody else surprised that TSN's column reported it as the Rags beating themselves, rather than the Isles beating the Rags?

Yeah, me neither.

The Sporting News: Sure there’s softer, cheaper brands of toilet paper, but we give you pictures and something to read while you do your business!

It’s almost like the total shutdown and mauling they gave the Lightning means nothing to these idiots.

Uh, TSN? The Bolts have a much more lethal offense…and we slugged ’em 5-1.

Our BACK UP goalie, who hasn’t played a meaningful game in ages beat the Rags.

Put the pieces together. I know logic and reason are concepts that are discouraged over the hip, the trendy and the flavor of the week teams with really nice shiny new arenas and a few playoff appearances over the last few years at TSN, but try to remember that you work for a business that covers sports teams that you might not like, BUT OTHER PEOPLE DO!

I’m calling for a total boycott of TSN linkage until those jerks give us some respect!

Let's also remember this ain't last season's team.

We’ve Inigo between the pipes, Tavares going Krakatoa and a year older and light years more mature than most kids his age, a well constructed team that hasn’t been plagued by….that word…

I believe.

(not saying you guys don’t, just stating my position right up front; I think this team is going to shake the league this year)

It should be our motto as Isles fans this year: “Believe!”

I just know that if they end up 5-4-0 by next week, people will be talking about the wheels falling off and same old and stuff. Just a long season guaranteed to have some ups and downs.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
