Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

Via Strang, Fornabaio and the Isles official site. Unfortunately I think this is a sign that Frans might be more injured then they initially let on, otherwise why would you recall a defensive forward from Bridgeport?

[Update: Also, Isles say Rick DiPietro is headed back to L.I. early to have his groin injury evaluated.]

why not ullstrom?

do they not think hes ready?

by Zhora on Jan 7, 2011 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Well if it’s a short term Frans-induced injury replacement, Colliton will probably just be filling in on the 4th line. The only way they recall Ullstrom is if he’d be playing more than 4th line minutes. Let him get 20 minutes a game in the AHL than 10-12 in the NHL.

gotcha, i wanted to see ullstrom too.

pretty simple...

Colliton was borderline NHL center when they decided to get Gordon lackey Photo-Nate. So he already has a relationship with the organization beyond his short tenure this year.
Jeremy wins draws, kills penalties and is RH… If Bailey takes the 2A center positon then Colliton either give that line a natural RW, or be used as a second center/RW for any critical defensive zone draws where your RW options are left-handers… mostly the fourth line, or filling in for Sim/Joensuu. You most likely won’t see Jeremy and Trevor in any pictures together where ice is involved.

as I was just saying on the earlier morning thread....

and at Sound Tigers Report 3

Colliton is really the best choice – he certainly has the most experience, and plays a solid two way game – he is the most NHL ready, and that is saying something about our depth at forward at present

Rakhshani looks fatigued and Ullstrom really hasn’t shown enough

By the way

Bignham sounded like he shares your assessment on Rakh lately. Fornabaio had him saying he looks slow/tired.

I’m worried about Rakh because he cooled off almost the second that Bailey got called up.

I hope i'm overreacting ...

and flat out wrong, but I think Nielsen might be another guy who is simply is going to get hurt often and miss stretches of games every year. The shame is if he bulks up to be get more durable he might well sacrifice the quickness and speed and litheness that make him such an asset.

by dose on Jan 7, 2011 2:53 PM EST reply actions

It's hockey...

you hope for 65 games out of these guys, and when they reach 75 you go crazy about how duable they are. Especially the smaller guys who spend most of thier careers avoiding career ending hits.

But I would like to ask this. Does anybody lse think that over the long haul the Coliseum ice is a contributing fator to the amount and duration of Islander injuries?

Good question. I expect a veteran that plays on the ice would know the difference. Have to search for articles on it to get a grasp. Could be a possibility.

by OzzyFan on Jan 7, 2011 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

I would be surprised if it was a true factor.

They play at many different rinks and even when they are home they are spending lots of time at Iceworks. I’d assume it’s possible for some injuries to occur from soft ice but I wouldn’t think it would be a top reason.

You mean to tell me shooting the puck from 70 feet out doesn't earn us extra goals?

by Anarcurt on Jan 7, 2011 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder about the ice from time to time

Injuries are really so hard to get a read on. There have been fewer groin injuries this year, haven’t there?

And every once in a while I look into the injury list to detect any patterns, but their triage list is all over the place and goes back to even Steve Stirling. A Kvasha groin here, a Snow double-knee sprain there.

Like your 65-game standard, injuries just happen. And I swear they happen more to the teams I root for. (Seriously, I believe 74 games is the average NHL player season.)

Lighthouse Hockey: And you shall know us by the fraying of our hips.

by Dominik on Jan 7, 2011 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

I certainly don't know ...

enough to answer that, but I do know that just about since the beginning of the franchise the Coliseum ice has been notoriously bad. I remember reading complaints about it all the way back, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it’s a factor, if not a cause, of a bunch of injuries.
I also recall the Garden was known for horrible ice for years. I believe it was the defenseman Dale Rolfe who tore up his ankle when his skate got stuck in a rut. I think it pretty much wrecked what was left of his career. But I don’t seem to hear about the problem there anymore. Was the problem fixed at the Garden and not at the Coliseum?

by dose on Jan 8, 2011 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

NVMC ice was revamped this past offseason. They put in new machinery to make the ice colder… and showed that off by having hockey in July. The Islanders injuries do not even point to being bad ice related. If this theory is going to be dragged out, where are the examples? You cant just say because theres supposedly bad ice and theres injuries, that demonstrates causality. It doesnt.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

i didn't know ...

they ‘revamped’ the ice. i was really just echoing a possibility speculated on by others and based on my own obvious lack of up-to-date knowledge on the subject.
but i don’t necessarily see why you have to yell at me like that.

by dose on Jan 8, 2011 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Im not sure why you feel yelled at, dose.

There is absolutely nothing in my post yelling at anybody. You brought up this idea and I said if theres merit to it, where are the examples? Im just talking about what you brought up is all.

by TheMetalChick on Jan 8, 2011 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

Could be

But I don’t think groin injuries relate to small frames, so I wouldn’t put this in his “small Frans” injury file. He strikes me as such a good skater that he’s good at avoiding contact, unless it’s Mike Mottau coming like an elbow missile and using a teammate as a screen.

And now from the department of redundancy department...

Rick Dipietro was sent home to be reevaluated… and get some rest. Looks like the organizaton is okay with the two rookies sharing the load for the remainder of the road trip. Can’t see why not, at least if one falters the other can come in without their benefactor getting all pissy.

by Zhora on Jan 7, 2011 5:22 PM EST reply actions

I don't read anything more into his going back early.

DP more than likely wasn’t going to play against either Colorado or Chicago so what’s the sense in him being on the road. This will give him some extra time with the trainers to be ready potentially for when the Canucks roll into town.

it's probably the smart move

But given the poor guy’s history, it’s going to lead to a lot of “uh-oh” moments… and Internet jokes. Honestly, the first thing I thought of when I heard RDP was heading home early? Bloom County, when Steve Dallas goes for a checkup and the doctor tells him, “Check again – are you SURE you’re still breathing?”

Did RDP Get Too Musclebound?

Around the mid-2000s, RDP seemed to really bulk up and get ripped more than you’d really like in a goaltender considering the need for flexibility and lots of very short, hard moves on skates. I’ve always wondered whether his hip and knee injuries were caused by him bulking up too much to the point where his tendons couldn’t support the muscles around them.

by rmblifn on Jan 8, 2011 2:19 AM EST up reply actions

Interesting. Maybe too low of body fat doesn't give him enough cushion for falls and some stretches and stuff?

Or he is in the dangerously low body fat percentage category where you get hurt easily and don’t heal quick? Just putting out ideas.

I remember his stint back in 05-06 with Ted Nolan and he wasn’t half bad. Definitely not Nielsen but not terrible either.

If it did, the Islanders and Blues would have 40 Cups between them. (I always managed concurrent seasons, they’d meet in the finals, and I’d “coach” the home team for two periods and the away team for the other.)

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
