He has to realize, and I think he is realizing, hockey is a team sport. Because you are supposed to play defensively doesn’t mean you are not going to create anything offensively. It’s the other way. He’s been playing better defensively and he’s been getting more chances. The more he realizes that, the more successful he’s going to be.
Patrik Elias on Ilya Kovalchuk's progress. On the one hand, if Ilya discovers his own zone it's bad news for Atlantic rivals. On the other, it's still stunning the guy has made it this far without learning how hockey works.

Who was going to hold him accountable in Atlanta?
I am sure that it has been a process in NJ. Makes what the Isles are doing with Kirill that much more impressive.
They certainly tried in Atlanta
But with all the turmoil there and his established star power, it was a losing battle.

That's awesome. Elias pulls no punches!
The Isles future looks brighter then most would think with these young core guys in place:
Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, Nielsen, Niederreiter, Grabner, Moulson, MacDonald, Hamonic, and DeHaan.
has to be a guy of Elias' stature
One of the few guys on that team with the accomplishment and skill to call out Kovi.

Atlanta with Kovy remains me of the old L.A. Kings. The object was never to put a winning team on the ice but a few “rock-star” players like Dionne to attract hollywood actors, etc. Kovy should have learned these things when he was a kid with Atlanta.
