Took them long enough

I don’t think they should toll it though. As much as the situation sucks and punishing the guy would be nice there is no reason to keep this circus going in to the offseason.

You mean to tell me shooting the puck from 70 feet out doesn't earn us extra goals?

Agreed

No need to extend it, but stand firm now.

Wonder if I can cancel my #20 Nabokov jersey order?

#20 jersey? LOL

Dom, for the life of me I can’t recall anyone of any signicicance that wore #20 for the Isles. Can anyone recall a great/good player that wore #20?

YES the Webber & I was WRONG: Ray Ferraro!!!!

Here are a couple of more no big names:
Sean Bergenhiem, Ray Ferraro, Richard Grenier, Dale Henry, Matts Halin, Wayne Merrick, Bob Nystrom ( he does not count he only wore #20 in 1973), Doug Rombough, Yvon Voutour, Richard Zednik, Steve Webb.

Probably shouldn't toll it

But….wouild be cool if they could hold onto him next year….get everyone back….be a 4th seed next season and then trade him to the Devils or whoever is at the bottom of thr standings

I'm sure Meehan doesn't like looking bad

Probably figured that Nabokov wanted to get his foot back in the door, play some games in the NHL before UFA starts and the market is saturated. Who remembers how good Nabokov used to be? You take a look at his KHL stats and they look bad, are you going to gamble for him or overpay a Vokun or Anderson?

I think Meehan is just doing as instructed by the Knob.

I can’t imagine a big name like Meehan making such an amatuer mistake. He probably advised Nabokov what the situation is and the Knob probably ignored it in favor of his fantasy of going to the Wings to do them what he did to the Sharks.

I’d be okay with letting this saga fizzle out at the end of this season. While Nabby is a dick, I hate giving the Canadian media more circus fodder even though the Isles did nothing wrong here (except try to improve their team). Meehan’s not going to screw the Isles through Bailey, Hamonic, Martin or RSH. He’s a professional, and if he expects other teams to take him seriously as an agent, he’ll leave the Nabby drama with that client. If this contract is tolled, Nabokov would do wonders by fixing his attitude, play some games and hope to get traded to a contender. Stupid choker goalie.

Bad goalie. BAD GOALIE!

I’m sure we hurt his feelings. Although sitting out at the age of 35 is not exactly the best strategy. Would Nabi lose more money getting shelled in the Isles net or sitting out for the remainder of the season? From sitting out it almost seems like he is scared that he would be exposed for not being the reputable goalie that he believes that he is currently. I’m curious to see what he gets in his next contract and who will be foolish enough to overpay if anyone will do that at this point.

For all we know they asked JT and he declined. Skinner might be a good choice. McKenzie brought up his name earlier and it makes sense. Malkin only went official (as a no go) this afternoon so we might not hear of his replacement until tomorrow.

by OzzyFan on Jan 25, 2011 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

My two cents

I think they should hold him to his contract next year (never heard the term “tolling” before… sounds odd), and hopefully the League will make an example of this and allow the Islanders to trade him without putting him on waivers next year. That would force him to place nice and do what all other hockey players must do: Play well in order to get ice time (either here or with another team via trade).

While I understand people concerned about the media circus and taking pot shots at the Isles, let’s face it: the circus will continue regardless, and they’ll probably find a way to abuse us even if we put him back on waivers (“wow, the Isles sure do put up a fight, don’t they? Snicker Snicker!”). The media will jump on the Islander bandwagon like my 400-pound co-worker on a T-bone steak, once the Isles start winning.

In the end, I just think it’s better for the Isles to show they mean business.

2011 is our year! Now if only seasons didn't span over two years.

I can't see how suspending/tolling Evie will make us look very good.....

….seems as though I’m the lone dissenting voice here (or perhaps not) but I don’t think it serves the Islanders’ long-term interests well at ALL to either suspend or toll Nabokov; the CBA and league rules will punish him accordingly – otherwise, this team looks as petulant and/or vindictive as Nabby for not reporting…..

by ogam5 on Jan 25, 2011 6:53 PM EST reply actions

Those are the league rules

They can’t make him report. Other teams may sour on him for this, but I doubt it. The NHL may actually want us to make this stand to avoid having good teams bring in ringers at the deadline.

Depends on the effect of tolling.

If his contract is tolled next season and he no longer needs to pass through waivers to be traded, then the Islanders have a great bargaining chip. However, it isn’t clear what the ruling would be. At 17K above the league minimum there are plenty of teams that would take a chance on Nabokov. Detroit immediately comes to mind and would have to part with a mid-level draft pick at a minimum.

Sarcasm is my permanent font.

by Hockey1919 on Jan 26, 2011 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

A public defender would be nice

It’s really disgusting to see how media and fans alike pile on our team (and us by the way, you should see what they’re saying about people from Long Island) for doing absolutely nothing wrong. There needs to be a voice out there that offers at least an ounce of support to our franchise. A few years back, it seemed that EJ Hradek was trying to help us out, but we know that ESPN will never allow for positive Islander commentary….that’s just not good business.

To see the over-reactions of fans and media to this pretty cut-and-dry situation is really upsetting.

I feel bad for you guys

This is a good business decision, and people are shitting all over you because they think you should just roll over and not try to improve because you’re not doing great.

Do people not understand the waiver rules, or forgot the fact that his agent said he’d play for anyone? Or do they assume teams will just let him go through because he’s old and wants one last shot at the cup? Well sorry folks, that’s not how things work. I hate people, they’re the worst

Its a funny argument, you suck so don't get good players.

Does anybody realize what they are saying? The islanders aren’t any good, so why do they need good players? Detroit fans are a little bit arrogant as well.

Why did they need Yzerman, when they were the Dead Things for so many years, they made the Leafs look productive. The Olympia was dump and not even Gordie Howe wanted to stick around. 30 years later and they have the same number of Cups as the Islanders over the same time span. With the Detroit economy tanking they can’t even sell out all of their playoff games so how bad is it going to be if they take a dip in the standings. They shouldn’t be so f’ing arrogant as if it could never happen to them. Even Scott Bowman jumped ship and I could say that haven’t won dick since he left.

So it’s up to us at LHH, and more generally across the SB platform. And considering the quality of stories and comment threads we see regularly, I’d say we’re up to it. Long live the citizen press!

The three teams that couldn’t realistically block the move and he also improved his cred with Pittsburgh, Dallas, Boston and Washington, the teams that didn’t need the Wings getting any better than they already are.

Can you imagine if you are one of top teams in the league and your biggest competitior is allowed to add a first string goaltender for little more than left over coal? I’d be pretty pissed if I were every team, but Detroit if Garth didn’t do this.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
