Around SBN: Where Do The Lakers Go From Here?

This has been rumored before -- and the NYI is the one entry at Icethetics that they don't have much detail/speculation on -- but it does sound like the Isles might be one of the teams getting a new 3rd.

Icethetics rips the old orange one; I wasn't a big fan but I know a lot of people are. Any thoughts, guesses, wishes?

I liked the Orange 3rd

I don’t so much mind any “3rd” as long as our first two aren’t an effing disgrace. I also think the Rangers anniversary (85th) is a real sharp Jersey. Especially with the shoulder patches. It looks real “throwback”. And from here I’m gonna stop before I start sounding like an interior designer or fashionista.

rec'd for panache

And if the Isles wear those, the Ice Girls have to come out in glasses and schoolgirl outifts. We’ll call it Poindexter Night.

Wouldn't mind the orange. Would be interested if we had a cool/non-fishticks-guy new logo. St.Patricks day green jerseys would be a cool 3rd jersey option imo.

The Isles future looks brighter then most would think with these young core guys in place:
Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, Nielsen, Niederreiter, Grabner, MacDonald, Hamonic, and DeHaan.

....haven't we been here before?

Per Allison Chin at Islanders Merchandising, they are under a VERY strict gag order; I tried sounding her out when recommending an A-Mac T-shirt (surprisingly, I was the FIRST to do so – said they’re waiting ‘til season’s end to make any further product decisions, which in a way sounded a bit OMINOUS, but probably just given the grim backdrop of this season’s questions about possible relocating…..)

My feelings about any 3rd are as follows: with the particular fashion sensibilities of these fans, the new entry should somehow incorporate basic design elements common to the original/current uniforms, retain distinct continuity. And Chris at Aesthetics is somewhat right: the diagonal tapered striping on the oranges were a bit suggestive of, um, male bragging (followed the angle of the ‘Y’, so not COMPLETELY out of existing context…..but overall, I liked them very much even if I haven’t worn mine in a while now…..one thing I thought nice was the chance to feel what it’s like to have shoulder yoking (but of course, that led to the pseudo-yoked pajamas/motocross jerseys/clown outfits/pick your pejorative!) So maybe that’s one element which could be retained….

Very mixed emotions about the possibility of a BLACK alternate; now that we’ve switched back to the original royal blue/burnt orange (with its inherent contrast issues, as I’ve said in the past) that shade of blue will stand out well on a black field, as will the orange – but is it REALLY necessary? Seems also a bit OUTDATED if the Mets and Knicks alternates are some sort of benchmark – and the royal blue subsequently presented as PURPLE/FORUM BLUE in certain lighting due to how the eye naturally combines colors. Also conflicted about the introduction of any new primary logo crest, even a lighthouse as much as I loved the late Nineties variation, but if it’s done with integrity, that COULD change – as a secondary/shoulder emblem, absolutely, also utilizing the 4 Cup stripe motif now brilliantly (inspiring a V-8 moment in me – DUH; why didn’t I think of that???? SO ridiculously simple and obvious) incorporated into the primary logo…..

No, as I’ve hinted at previously, the new 3rd should be a variation of the so-called Dynasty-era design, to placate a large number of fans who are heavily invested in it (never liked the reversed white-on-top-of orange hem and forearm striping motif even though it IS consistent with the original pant design and new socks) but keeping the wider orange swaths while compensating as necessary, making the overall scheme just BIGGER, as has happened with the classics we’re wearing…..

And finally, a mid-season review of the home/blue logo on white, minus the familiar blue outer ring: I just don’t know; some nights I’m OK with it and, others, just seems WRONG, especially with the newly widened royal blue swaths – again, because I’ve always skewed towards a preference for larger-sized manifestations of this logo from a visibility, as opposed to practicality, consideration – the resolve as related to contrast issues isn’t the greatest but, hey, they’re OUR colors and it’s OUR logo…..

Even before LHH, I always liked the Lighthouse patch. Wouldn’t mind seeing it incorporated into the Isles map of Long Island.

For all that’s good and holy though, No Black, No Circle Crest logo.

I wouldn't mind

a jersey along the lines of the Lightning’s “Bolts” jerseys,

Maybe solid blue with “Isles” across the jersey in orange

Like Dom, NOT a fan of standalone wordmarks.....

…..on second thought, wordmarks, PERIOD (see: Dallas and Vancouver). In this case, it wouldn’t be much better than a lot of the non-uniform RBK apparel…..as I said, if Terry can come up with a REALLY impressive lighthouse primary logo for the 3rd, that might be very nice….

Just to warn you now

What if it’s the NYI Guardian?

You mean to tell me shooting the puck from 70 feet out doesn't earn us extra goals?

by Anarcurt on Jan 18, 2011 1:40 PM EST reply actions

shouldnt we

see what it actually is before we deem him un-jersey worthy?

 - even if we are already 99.9% sure he’s un-jersey worthy

NYI Hockey! We'll get that winless month yet!

he's a Guardian

He’s AUTOMATICALLY unjersey worthy.

Though rumor has it that the Isles’ Guardian is the brother-in-law of the Kings’ Guardian.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
