Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Not really news, in that it's been talked about all summer, including most recently in this FanPost. His shoulder surgery was in March; no doubt info will come on that status.

Meanwhile, if you haven't planted your flag on the Lighthouse Hockey user map, go do that. (Or don't, if you're the hermit type. Your choice; fine, be that way.)

Finally,

lol. I’m wondering about his status too. Looks like we got a 4th line spot filled! lol

Although he isn’t very important, his play and recovery from his injury have somewhat of an impact on our powerplay and team as a whole.

Well supposedly he was hurting all year long last year. I almost forgot in his first season on the Island he managed nearly 40 points in 50 games. If he can manage 40 points in 80 games I’d be happy.

Me, too

I’m really curious what he could do with a healthy shoulder. It visibly limited him last year, yet you could still see a contrast in the way, for example, PK forwards would approach him (tentatively) at the point versus how they’d approach Jack Hillen.

I think Hillen will earn that respect over time, but Weight still seems to command it now.

One more year of getting to watch Doug. Very nice.

Yu have to understand, watching Doug is a huge consolation- since my favorite piece of eye candy was bought out. There arent too many guys in the NHL that I can appreciate hotness-wise who wont soon enough make me sound like that cougar spammer. :- /

Interestingly, I kind of am. I wouldnt say Gillies is a great looking guy, but theres something one can truly appreciate in regard to a guy who makes bold facial hair choices. This whole concept however does bring me back to Witt… he totally pulled that stache off, I dont care what anyone else says.

Even I can admit it...

…he’s a handsome dude. Actually had this same conversation with Mrs. Lighthouse when he was dealt to St. Louis ten — gulp — ten years ago.

He really and truly is. Now mind you, a player can be butt ugly and be my favorite player on the team- its happened many times- but if a guy is great looking and I am NOT practically old enough to be his mommy or at least his frickin aunt or something, well then I just cant help but notice.

Weight and C

I refuse to say anything negative about Doug Weight. I’m not sure where he fits in other than in a player/coach role to fill in for injured players and incomplete coaching. I will, however say that I’d prefer a CAPTAIN that is on the ice for 70+ games, and plays an important role in those 70+ games… **COUGH**STREIT**COUGH""
That being said (God, I hate when I say that), Good luck Doug, may your season be healthy, productive and another one without incident in your guest house.

PS: Does millionaire John Tavares graduate into his own “BIG HOUSE” this year, and if so does Nino get a shot at Casa Capitan?

I think part of him ending his season early last year was to make sure he was 100% for this season.

btw I’ve never heard Streit interviewed, does he speak English?

I believe somebody (maybe Botta) wrote that he speaks English, German and French fluently.

You don't have to even speak English to get citizenship,

they have the test written in many different languages and a number of government papers in multiple languages.

It’s a good thing when Dougie goes up to Blake or Schremp during a lull in practice and explains “player-to-player” the concept that Gordon was just screaming about. Here’s an example:

Gordon: [yelling] HEY ROB! YOU BETTER START HITTING OR YOU CAN BE SURE YOU’LL BE SITTING LIKE FIRST HALF LAST YEAR!

Weight: “Hey Shrempie, the reason he keeps reminding you to make that first hit on the fore-check is because it takes that guy out of the play momentarily so the guy with the puck has fewer options.”

The younger guys benefit from this. I’m happy to have him back and I think he will bring that kind of leadership to the team regardless of whether he’s wearing the ‘C.’ A healthy Weight means more production, too.

by Hakker on Aug 31, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed...

but until somebody is hurt, I don’t see him getting any significant ice time… unless he’s one of the musical chairs LWs with Nino, Joensuu, Martin, Gillies, Sim and Hilbert.

My cup is 3/4 empty, How 'bout yours?

by JPinVA on Aug 31, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Of Course, Nino, Joensuu, Martin, Hilbert would have to make the team. And Gillies is not going to be a full time player, but more for those teams that use a lot of hitting.

Thus the “MUSICAL CHAIRS” reference… Moulson is the only “lock” at LW and Martin will be given every opportunity to play his way off the team. If Martin is a FT NHL player that opens up the second and fourth line roles the captain. The second will probably be filled for nine games by Nino, and at least 20 by Joensuu. The fourth will most likely be for Sim, Gillies and Weight depending on the challenges presented by injury and opponent.

Maybe just one shift a period plus power plays.

by Hakker on Aug 31, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

If JW does what we all expect Weight’s PP time will be limited as well. one or two shifts on the fourth line and the second unit left point position doesn’t exactly scream out CAPTAIN.. but I’m sure he’s a great captain off the ice as well.

If Weight misses significant action again

…maybe this is the year for Streit to assert his voice over the room as well, and stake a claim to the next “C”?

I don’t know. Who knows what goes on in the room and on the bench, or whether the team is dead set on having a younger captain next.

I'd like Streit as a captain,

but he’d be a somewhat weird choice. He’s not a very vocal guy, but he plays the game very hard and is great at his position. Kind of like what I see Tavares becoming in a year or 2. KO probably deserves the spot because of his age, play, and spot on the team. OR, I’ll throw a fireball(ie:curveball) in here and say if Wiz plays a physical, shot blocking, 35pts+, 2-way top 2 defense spot, stands up for his teamates without second thought in numerous situations this season and signs a 2-3yr+ extension he’d in my mind be the lead candidate for the spot next year. He just is giving off this vibe to me that he’s captain potential as long as his offense and +/-(2-way) numbers follow his no quit, intense, loyal, and hardnosed play.

Nuggets from Strang's Tweets
Doug Weight said shoulder feels best it has in years and he’s in peak physical condition thanks to an aggressive rehab this offseason

She also says he’s talking about making a mark in training camp and repaying the org for showing faith in him. I’m sure more of that is in the Newsday blog but, yeah, well, you know…

AND THE ROSTER COMES OUT:

STARTING SECOND LINE CENTER: DOUG WEIGHT
I would lol so much if he stole the 2nd line center spot from schremp out of camp. If he really was struggling that much last season because of his shoulder, then maybe he does have another 50-60pt+ season in him. Either way from hearing this, if he’s given 3rd line minutes I’d expect a 40pt season from him, 4th line minutes I’m expecting ~30pt season from him. An insider raises the bar like that and the people’s expectations rise with it.

Go isles or Go home.

I really figure Weight will mostly be a wing and faceoff man, honestly. Pegging his minutes, I figure it will be 3rd/4th-line level except with more PP time and intermittent shifts with the more offensive guys.

I think it’s Schremp’s to lose, and if he does lose it the next in line is Bailey, then Frans… I don’t think, unless he shows AMAZING chemistry with any combination of wings, Doug Weight will get double digit minutes this year.. consistently. I’m all for a meritocracy, but that would be a slap in the face of the future of the franchise.
Which is why I’m not crazy about signing him. If he sucks, no big deal. If he’s great, wahoo… but if he shows just a little more than those other three guys to win a key role on the team… uh oh!

And more from Weight

Full Q&A at nhl.com:

I tore my labrum completely. But I didn’t know if I was going to have another chance to play. In hindsight, I played horribly. I really couldn’t perform. I had a lot of things on my mind that I never thought of on the ice before — what position I was to not get hit. I kind of thrive on contact to make plays. I’m not the biggest or the fastest, so it was tough. Looking back, I wish I had done the surgery in November.
