Does Kabanov make the team this season?

Interesting tidbit from Botta's latest;

Invaluable Islanders development coach Eric Cairns has taken Kabanov under his enormous wing. After spending some time with Emerson Etem in Los Angeles, Kabanov is now living with the former Islanders defenseman. “Right near the beach,” said the 17-year-old Russian. “It’s very nice. Eric Cairns is a lot older than me, but he’s become one of my closest friends.”

HMMMM!!!

I wonder if there is more to this. I'm not up on all this kids personal issues but it is interesting that he is being taken in by Cairns. Not so much as "under the wing" but perhaps "under the watchfull eye" as well. Given that this kid is a very valuable assett taken in the third I wonder if the organization decides to reduce their risk and keep em up here?

If that's the case perhaps he cuts his teeth on the third line this season?

there are a few variables about just saying if he makes the team or not, because he could be very well be fighting nino, petrov, or both to make the team, not counting martin or joe and sue as well…

we do know that no one is making or eliminating themselves from the big club this week, so it may be premature to really get deep into the debate, for now, i’m enjoying that he’s got a new job translating for Petrov

Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango ?

I do think there is going to be at least two forward spots open for prospects this year...

baring a signing. They are going to come from, Nino, MM, JJ, Petrov, or anyone else that shows they can play for the big club. I think its going to be all about performance, not age, or experience.

by Judgegavel on Jul 7, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Still my bets are...

Nino, and JJ (most talent, and most ready). Petrov is the wild card, KK probably needs to look like Ovechkin to make it.

Cairns' biggest project yet

Don’t know if he’ll make the team or not, but I have to say as soon as I heard they picked KK I thought, “This is a project for Cairns.”

It sounds like Cairns has a great rapport with the prospects he works with. Seen a lot of quotes of kids speaking highly of him. This will be his toughest one, I’m sure, but here’s hoping…

Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.

What interests me about this is

given what Snow did with Okposo, getting him here, I wonder if the same kinda thing applies here. When you have a high valued assett with career threatening question marks, best to manage it yourself than entrust it to another.

I’d imagine some of that thinking has gone into prying Petrov from the KHL.

by Chickendirt on Jul 7, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I buy that

On both counts. In truth, I like that approach: If you have any doubts about your assets, bring ’em under your own roof (and show them that life as an Islander property can be good, in the process).

I very much doubt it...

but its certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Although, he also says he’s still in touch with Moncton, and will go back to juniors if he doesn’t make the team, I think they would have considered taking him if they were worried where he would go, with no place for him back at Moncton (KHL, stop playing all together, who knows). And if Moncton was releasing him would he have been allowed to go to the AHL?

by Judgegavel on Jul 7, 2010 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t believe that he is eligible for the AHL this season. I would like to see the rules on that changed.

Bergie replacement on the wing?

by NYIsles629 on Jul 7, 2010 1:03 PM EDT reply actions

I think thats actually going to be JJ

although its fairly open competition, its just JJ is probably the best defensive/checking line prospect of the bunch.

by Judgegavel on Jul 7, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

No Bergie and no Park

That means our third line is getting an overhaul.

Kabanov Neilsen and Marting would be an odd combo. Unless they throw him on the second line.

by Chickendirt on Jul 7, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

He doesn't make it as a third liner...

thats not his game, only way he makes it, just like Nino, is if he’s on the first two.

by Judgegavel on Jul 7, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't doubt it's not his game

But if you were going to rush a prospect, and traditionally when kids are broken in, it’s generally advisable to stick em on the third line for awhile.

pigs may fly...

even Kirill said that he sees himself back in Moncton although he’d go along with the Isles’ wishes. As I have said elsewhere, if he makes the team out of camp, I am playing the lottery and I am going to win.

The one caveat here is Moncton. There have been noises about them not wanting him back. If that continues to be the case, what will become of him? I suspect that Garth and Co are working that angle behind the scenes as we speak.

by BCISLEMAN on Jul 7, 2010 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

but he just told reporters today that they would take him back…

Who? Kabanov?

He may be hoping for that…and in fact he is from his comments in LA. That doesn’t mean it will happen. Garth and Co will have to nail this down this summer. They do not want a scenario where Kirill has no place to play in NA and has to go back to Russia with his tail between his legs.

by BCISLEMAN on Jul 7, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, botta has it right in the article

Kabanov, having no trouble speaking for himself, said he hears regularly from Moncton head coach (and former NYI assistant) Danny Flynn, and the Wildcats welcome him if Kabanov does not make the Islanders in 2010-11.

just the same due diligence

Garth has to make sure that is the case.

by BCISLEMAN on Jul 7, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

As with everything with this kid, I’m gonna hold judgment until I see it from Moncton’s mouth. I’m sure Snow will be in touch with them too, though.

Kabanov is about 6’2/6’3, 175 lbs. From a “size” perspective, I can’t see how you’d throw a kid like that straight into the NHL – especially after some 20-odd games of major junior the previous year. I mean, I saw clips of him at the combine a couple of months ago, and his legs looked like chopsticks. On skill, I’m sure he’s got the goods – or is close to having the goods, anyway – but can he handle the physical grind of it all? I’m not sure. If he hits the gym and really adds some bulk over this next year – and tears it up on the ice with Moncton, of course – I think he’ll exponentially improve his chances of sticking w/the Islanders in 2011-12.

Also – all his drama/burned bridges aside – it’s the QMJHL or bust for him. He can play in the AHL on a short-term basis between now and 2012 (through ATO/PTOs, I think – say, if his junior team is eliminated early from the playoffs, he can join Bridgeport on a “tryout” basis and get into a few games w/them), but since he was drafted into the NHL while playing in the QMJHL, he’s not eligible to play a full AHL season until 2012-13. If he were drafted while playing overseas, he’d be AHL-eligible as soon as he crossed the pond. (see: Nicklas Bergfors, etc.)

Sounds like a prudent, wise plan. Isn’t he also still working through a wrist injury?

by Dominik on Jul 7, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I remember reading how much that bothered him towards the end of Moncton’s season. Hopefully he’s all healed up by now – or close to 100%, anyway.

assuming bridges are rebuilt

(this is kinda like WW II—the USAAF destroys a bridge, the Germans rebuild it) he will probably be in Moncton for at least a year.

by BCISLEMAN on Jul 7, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Can we bring in a German engineer to rebuild this one?

Ah!

Thanks. He looked familiar, but I couldn’t place it. I have Yogi Loew (their soccer coach) on the mind.
