Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

A rough 2009-10 in Bridgeport (21 games) and the signings of Trevor Gillies and Zenon Konopka paves the way for Rechlicz's departure. Best of luck to The Wrecker.

I thought he was already gone

I think he’s easily one of the worst enforcers the Isles have had in the last 20 years.

At least Fritz can hold a job in the AHL, I wouldn’t be surprised if Reich ends up in the ECHL or USHL next year.

did he ever really get a fair chance to succeed?

Yes he did. But instead of seizing the opportunity to learn from an experienced heavyweight in Gillies and to develop his game he managed to piss off Capuano, play wrecklessly, take bad penalty after bad penalty and buried himself on the depth chart. Rechlicz had 128 PIMs in 21 games. That’s 6.10 PIMs a game, lower than Gillies 7.04 (169 in 24 AHL games). BUT Rechlicz has only 10 fights, so 78 of his PIMs in 21 games were for non-fighting related penalties that’s 3.7 PIMs a game not related to fighting. So basically putting Rechlicz on the ice was the equivalent of giving up two power plays a game.

Yeah. I wish the guy well and hope he figures it out in his next stop. Maybe a different voice other than Gordo and Capuano may be able to get to him.

Comment worthy?

Was that really worthy of a full comment? :P

No, like WebBard said, that’s why it’s just a fanshot, of two sentences, in July, when news is slow. Figured anyone who cares can write their obits here and then we’ll move it back to the right side for proper burial.

It actually interests me that he was on an entry-level deal (as opposed to a minor league vet you can sign to one-year deals), so getting rid of him and the final year of his contract requires this process. It was a failed experiment.

Well, its not for a buyout

I thought it might be, but it turns out it cant be.
Here in post number 4 the details were explained:

Can’t be a buyout.
The buyout window closed on June 30th. That was designed to ensure all players being bought out were available on July 1st for free agency. However, clubs do have 3 limited buyouts they can exercise outside of the buyout window, HOWEVER, they carry significant regulations. The NY Islanders only have 1 arbitration hearing. Matt Moulson. Therefore they cannot buyout anyone during this season outside of the June 15th-30th window.
My guess would be that he is being waived either to see if anyone would claim him to clear an SPC. Joel only has 23 NHL games played, his last in April. Thats well below the 60 required for him to have to clear waivers to move. Therefore I would think he is waiver exempt because he is only 23 and has only been signed for 2 seasons. He would have to play 60 NHL games or remain on a pro roster for quite a while to do so. Also he would have to earn over 95k in the AHL for waivers to pop up. I doubt he does as his NHL deal is 525k.
Basically Snow is probably just giving him a chance to get picked up by someone else but he can’t buy him out.

A-ha

I completely forgot that the buyout window was over. I knew there was another one, I didn’t realize it was so restricted. Huh.

What are the different types of waivers

he got an unconditional waiver, I know some guys get waived and then get reassigned to Bridgeport if they are not picked up. Is this called something else. If I understadn right, unconditional means he will not be reassigned, he is out of the orginization.

by Rickfansince76 on Jul 14, 2010 7:44 AM EDT reply actions

13.21: When a Club desires to terminate a Player’s SPC for any reason, such action may not be taken unt il Uncondit ional Waivers have been requested and cleared in conformity with this Article.

There are regular (for purposes of demoting/reassigning), re-entry (for calling back up at the risk of being claimed), and unconditional waivers. As best I can tell, all unconditional implies is that you’re telling the league, “Free to a good home” versus “we want to keep but reassign him, so if you claim him we’ll remember this day.”

Unconditional is what you have to do to buy out a player, but if TMC’s source is correct, that may not be an option here after the first buyout window. I know technically you cannot reassign an NHL player to the ECHL (only the AHL), so maybe this is a step to allowing that (I’d have to check, but I can’t find it in the legalese).

Is that the next step? If you clear buyout waivers, you go down to the AHL? I thought Bridgeport were the ones who waived him? I kind of figured this meant they were cutting all ties with him. Sorry, I’m confused.

by billymac23 on Jul 16, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

It is kinda confusing-

But nobody took him and he is still under contract, so what other explanation can there possibly be?
Maybe BPT will send him down, but he is still part of the organization until he is bought out, traded, picked up off waivers, or his contract expires.

Its Official

Rechlicz had his contract terminated by the organization, making him a UFA. Note the wording, that it was terminated and not bought out.

All NHL contracts are guaranteed, so Im pretty sure the only way to terminate an NHL contract IS to buy it out.
I dont know the particulars, but I do know Joel isnt going to not get paid.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
