Bits: Isles draft party reaction, that Cody Rosen pick, market opens tomorrow
The free agent feeding frenzy is less than (er, I mean close to) 24 hours away. Here's some of the news and views to chew on in the meantime:
- Puzzled by the Islanders' 7th-round pick of goalie Cody Rosen? So was Cody Rosen, who didn't believe it was really Garth Snow on the line. (This other story also gets quotes from Rosen, including Snow explaining 7ths are reaches for diamonds in the rough. But that second link has been wonky this a.m.)
- An ESPN look at Tyler Seguin is very heavy on quotes from John Tavares and Scott Gordon about the delicate process of jumping straight from the draft into the NHL. Good read for those quotes alone.
- Ladies and gentlemen, we have a trade...: Nashville gets the upset Kostitsyn for Dustin Boyd, free agent goalie Dan Ellis, and futures. Bob McKenzie is dubious about Ellis joining the Church of Carey Price environment. Habs Eyes on the Prize says it might work.
- NHL.com has a roundup of free agent possibilities for the Atlantic Division (and every other division), though it's pretty much as uncertain as anyone else's. Here is their list of the top defensemen available (I wouldn't touch PCS Willie Mitchell with a 10-foot pole, sadly).
- Meanwhile, Pierre LeBrun shares what's on his crackberry. Lots of agent smoke out there.
- A little local angle on the Tony DeHart pick, from the Oshawa Generals supply line.
- Recent IPB posts: The interview with Bobby Nystrom on Eric's free agent outlook; Botta's NYI free agency primer
- In honor of two early 2000s 1st-round picks being let go this week (Smith-bait Robert Nilsson is being waived in Edmonton), Dee reflects on the uncertainty of such picks. Everyone knew Nilsson would be cut, but Lowetide relishes the kick-in-the-ass statement anyway.
- Isles official stuff: Mingle with the prospects at the July 9 Mets game; The Reverend Brock Nelson was on NHL Live.
Finally, several fans have emailed me over the last few days, some to say thanks (thanks back!) and some to elaborate on the Draft Party reaction (Newsday said fans were disappointed with the Nino pick; others disagree.) A little more on that, and some video of the reaction:
Billy told me it was more surprise than disappointment, related to do with the possibilities that opened up once Columbus reached for Johansen:
"We were thinking 'Holy crap! Fowler, Gormley AND Connolly are available. Do we take Connolly for scoring? Or Fowler for defense? Or take Gormley as the safe pick?' Then we took Nino and it was like 'No way?!?!' Mind you we didn't say that in a bad way, just shocked. Out of the four people rumored for them to take, we didn't take one."
"Dragonfly" who runs Yes Islanders!, reports the same, and has some great video of the reaction: "You'll notice some people making noise and being excited, but many people were sitting in their seats with little response, positive or negative. I was surprised by the pick, and apparently so were the majority of fans in attendance."
By the way, his full draft video [below] is great -- a survey of tons of Isles fans at the Party guessing/hoping who the Isles would pick beforehand. Reminds me how fun it is to be a fan:
Just thought that was fun. If you see any interesting free agent stories (or anything else), as always post 'em in comments or FanShots. And remember: Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of some free agent's life.

technically, it’s over 24 hours away dom, noon on the 1st, not midnight ;-)
Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango ?
-sorry, that pic just screams Boh/Rhap to me
But midnight would be so much better. “Hello is this Willie Mitchell? Hi this is Glen Sather calling with a long term deal you can’t refuse…were you sleeping, drinking or is that the result of your condition?”
I might actually get to see the prospects camp this year. I'll actually be in Long Island for a change.

haha, no way slats stays awake past midnight, he’d have the Mess make that call…

Erm, uh, I knew that and yet I completely miscounted anyway.

it’s ok, 07/01/2010, 12:01a.m. is all about LeBron anyway, and all the headlines and sportscenter bottom lines will tell you all about where he went and why, and forget all about hockey again

That dawned on me this a.m.
I was starting to hear a bunch of LeBron talk — my life approach includes tuning out all NBA news if at all possible — and I thought, “Wait, is the NBA’s silly season date the same as the NHL’s?” That sort of rings a bell.

Perhaps you were doing your countdown to Murray’s reduced proposal. I fully suspect that she will put that plan out either tomorrow or the day after. Either way it will be right around the time the Isles announce some big free agent signing. Murray’s Murphy’s Law.

Speaking of nicknames, she needs an official one around here.

You are treading on dangerous ground with that one. I’ll stick with Murray’s Law.

you wouldn't like her when she's angry
Heck, I don’t care for her much right now.

hopeful
is how a friend who attended the draft party described it to me. i wonder if the non-tender of bergie means 2 things. 1. this opens a spot for nino on the roster at forward, since they anyways probably want him around streit.2. being that for purposes the salary floor is the isles Cap(!) ,and they are so mouch under the floor this could only mean that they are making a serious run at the top tier F.A.s,such as kovi and volchenkov. by cutting a mill here and there they can sign one without jeapordizing their status as lowest payroll. any thoughts?
by Lakewood Islander on Jun 30, 2010 10:53 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
I was thinking something similar but I don’t think they are looking at the top guys so much as they are looking at a number of mid range guys. With the thought that they will go out to fill spaces for a backup goalie, 2 D-men, and somewhere between 2-4 forwards (depending on their plans for the youngsters.)
Right before the draft Garth said that he did not believe that any of the prospects past the first 2 picks were NHL ready at that time. If he sticks by that assessment then he will probably leave Nino in the minors, Hamonic in BP and DeHaan in minors. If that is the case he is likely to sign more FA’s and they will probably be mid range targets. Even if they are mid-range that will probably be a significant upgrade from what we currently have. Odds are that they will be taller/bigger as well. :)

modano
i would much rather have signed him instead of weight. maybe we still have room for him anyways for 12 minutes a night? weights a great pp qb,but too fragile at this point. if we are carrying other known injury risks like martinek(understatement) then we cant afford any more.especially with other players recovering like jt,comeau and shremp
by Lakewood Islander on Jun 30, 2010 10:57 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
As fragile as Weight is at this point in his career I believe he exemplifies leadership. Modano on the other hand has had some diva like attitude problems in the past. In terms of ability you may be right because of Weights fragile condition. However with kids this young I think I would keep my money on Weight.

Have you seen Modano lately?
No way I’d take him over Weight. There is a huge difference in that Weight is aware of his limitations right now and fine with a reduced role.
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
modanos game is more similar to jts than weight,i want him to tutor him. weight never was the goal scorer for jt to emulate. modano is old enough to realize he isnt the future and is barely the present
by Lakewood Islander on Jun 30, 2010 2:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
But Modano’s game was far more speed-dependent than Weight’s was. Weight still buys time with his stickhandling, which is something JT can/should do.
Regardless, though it’s not my preferred option, at least Weight serves a role on the PP point and on low-line LW. Modano doesn’t even fit there.
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
Weight is there as an emeritus mentor
he has the chemistry with those guys. I see no good reason to bring somebody else in. If I did, it would be Saku. Awesome leadership.
No.
Doug knows his spot on this (or for that matter, any other) team. He knows he is a player/coach type. Modano thinks he is still a top 6 forward.
Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

watch that coli part with no sound, and tell me it’s not a little funny… streamers with no real fan frenzy that is… and in such a small area too
Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango ?
-sorry, that pic just screams Boh/Rhap to me
THAT is why I think the streamers-and-horn thing is probably over the top. You’re just asking for awkwardness when people don’t get the 18-year-old they are so totally sure is absolutely the future savior king of the world.
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
even if Nino or Hamonic make the team out of camp
You have to figure that they’re going to be learning on the job, not exactly ready for top-pair responsibility for at least the first three months of the year. It would be an accomplishment just being able to play credibly without expecting them to be Calder material out of the gate.
I won’t speak for anyone else, but sometimes I just get tooooooo hopeful, and suddenly Hamonic is Potvin Jr, Nino is the second coming of Gillies, Bailey grows a beard and turns into John Tonelli, etc etc. and we win the Cup by Thanksgiving. Whoaaaaa, boy, whoa.
IF all our wildest dreams come true we could see Moulson potting 40, JT making a Stamkos-leap, Okposo adding 30, Schremp-Bails-Nino turning into a matchup-headache second line, Frans with Comeau and Martin/Joensuu as a premium Devils-style shutdown line, a blend of puck-movers and crease-cleaners on D, and a healthy, fully-recovered RDP playing his best hockey behind them. If even one or two of those happened this season would be a success.
More likely, Moulson gets 30 again, JT reaches 30, Schremp’s full year matches the pace of his half-year, our D is credible but not magnificent, our rookies have growing pains or stay in juniors. They could still make the playoffs that way, but they may not.
Of course, that “what if” stuff is what makes July 1 so addictive, isn’t it? :)
Of course I'm an expert, I've seen Slap Shot eleven times!
Realistic Expectations
ONE. They improve their goal differential from -42 to 10-20… that’s a lot to ask, but the roster should improve THAT much with experience and new blood.
TWO. Meaningful games until the end… and being in the playoff conversation every day of the season.
THREE. Individuals. Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, Schremp and Comeau ALL improve their counting numbers. If Moulson becomes a consistant 20 scorer and contributes, I’m a happy camper.
FOUR. Figure out the PP and PK.
FIVE. Improve attendance!
SIX. DP decision.
But what does all this mean to Jeff Tambellini?
i dont even want to put expectations on JT yet til the boot comes off… but i see nothing wrong with your realistic expectations
so i havent done the whole roster space thing, but we have how many spots to fill? and 13 mil to get there? (keep in mind we were below the actual cap floor last year on loop hole rookie bonus stuff i think)

And this year is the priciest Yashin year of all
A whopping $4.755 million.

but is it just CW’s $ or cap hit $?
Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango ?

Pretty sure it's both
I forget how it’s figured at the moment, but after this year (which would have been the last year of his actual deal), the number goes down to $2.2 per for the final four years.

sometimes I just get tooooooo hopeful, and suddenly Hamonic is Potvin Jr, Nino is the second coming of Gillies, Bailey grows a beard and turns into John Tonelli, etc etc. and we win the Cup by Thanksgiving. Whoaaaaa, boy, whoa.
Sounds good to me. Book it!
Seriously, yes this is why July 1 is fantastic. Often a letdown, too, but still fantastic.
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
You need someone serious on the second line anyway
and if players like Nino, Kabanov, Nelson, Lee, and Petrov all develop as expected, in five years, we could have four potent scoring lines. Prior to this year, we didn’t have one.
Nigel Dawes, anyone?
The Flames reportedly put him on waivers. He is cheap, a LW, and has washed the Rangers stench off him by doing penance with two western teams first.
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
no thanks
he’s even smaller than bergie isn’t he?

A veritable lollipop kid. But a smart player. JP’s lament is well-taken though.
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
my BP just went up 20 points...
Cut Bergy for Dawes… oh yeah… that would sit well with me all year. Either they fill that roster spot with top six material, or from within. The only possible exceptions would be Nystrom, or somebody that had double digit goal potential, with size and the ability to chew up PK minutes.
But what does all this mean to Jeff Tambellini?
I still don’t understand the Rosen pick. I don’t see it as a big deal – I just don’t get it. There are 50 backup college hockey goalies … Why Rosen? No one has said anything that makes any sense. Garth Snow says “he reminds me of myself” … so? Like I said, there’s 50 backups. Why him?
I have friends at Clarkson – all I’ve heard from them is that Rosen’s dad has a lot of money. Maybe he bribed Snow. Who knows.
it’s in the linked articles, long story short, garth heard about the kid, his story was similar to garth’s story as a young player, and he threw him a bone to gnaw on

… just as a favor to Tommy Lasorda.
Kid was Mike Piazza.

From the second Rosen link
As fate would have it, Rosen was picked while this year’s Vees starter, Joel Vienneau, who was ranked by the Central Scouting Bureau, was not.
“Fate” is one word for it.
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
yeah ...
… I read all that, and that’s what I mean – it still makes no sense …. why throw him a bone vs. the other 50 guys that are the same thing????
for whatever reason, he heard about him and it resonated, to him, the other 50 aren’t the same… but really, should we be paying so much attention to this pick or this guy when we wont look to actually sign him til he’s done with college?
Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango ?

Why not? I wouldnt be able to force myself to care about who the Isles picked in the 7th round even if I tried lol.

Finally read the article about John Tavares and Scott Gordon with Seguin’s name in the headline. Good read if you realize it really has nothing to do with Boston.
Isn't that great?
I should have clarified: “Don’t worry. It’s not really about Boston or Seguin at all.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Now accepting applications for 2015.
Leaf fans are funny
looking at a Kaberle here-there—everywhere trade thread the other day. Guys pretty much sold that forget Savard, we are gonna get Ryan with Kaberle. One guy chimes in that he doesn’t want Savard because in five years Tavares and Seguin will be Leafs. I guess that’s the Leaf five year plan.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
I love Toronto fans. Poor DGB, he has to compete with the actual serious ravings of other Leafs fans.
Even if you could guarantee that JT and Seguin would sign with Toronto in five years, what do you do until then? Marc Savard is a fairly good player to have around while you’re waiting for the unicorn-riding leprechaun to vault the rainbow and start handing out free young scoring forwards.
