The Trib Sexist for Lampooning Pronger?
Some people just WANT to be offended.

I honestly didn't get the spoof in the first place
They photoshopped him in a skirt, next to some unflattering stats? Not only does that not really compute (what, “Pronger had a bad game = Pronger is a girl”?), but it is kind of sexist for an MSM media outlet. I didn’t see it as a big deal, just kind of stupid.

I had a slightly different take
I wrote this comment for Salon:
Some People Just Want To Be Offended
This has nothing to do with women and everything to do with Chris Pronger. He is always taking cheap shots himself and whining constantly to the refs at the slightest infraction committed against him and his teammates. So the Trib was mocking him as needing the protection of the referees in the same way that SOME women still act like they need a man’s protection.
Apart from that, women’s sports have become a much bigger deal. But no women have made it in the NHL and none are likely to do so. The men’s game is faster, men hit harder, and are bigger and stronger. Any protest from a feminist perspective simply trivializes feminism.
I can see all that (honestly, without seeing beyond the screenshot of the page, I wasn’t sure why they put him in a skirt, next to PIM and +/- stats. Whining doesn’t really cut it for me.).
But it’s still an odd juxtaposition that doesn’t even relate to the difference between male and female sports in my book. Want to say someone whines? Baby imagery. Want to say he’s dirty? There’s an app for that. A woman/skirt? Doesn’t that usually just mean they’re “weaker” or shy from getting their hands dirty?
I can’t believe I’ve even thought about it this much.

What about
Manon Rheaume, admittedly it wasn’t a regular season game, but she played better than some men I’ve seen…

a goaltender in a pre-season game?
Let me see a woman play on a third line in a forechecking role. I mean that was just an Espo publicity stunt.
I have no doubt,
that there are some out there that could do it. In general, I believe that generalizations suck. I will agree that most women could not play a third line fore-checking role, but I will also believe that most men couldn’t handle it either… God knows I couldn’t.

are there even any women playing in junior hockey?
I just do not see it ever happening. When there are no women playing at any level in men’s leagues, generalizations are quite fair. That’s why women’s hockey exists after all.
let's TAP this up
