Bits: Combine, prospects, free agents? June must be near.
If you're in the U.S., you're due for a holiday weekend. But we'll still have stuff up each day as the Stanley Cup final finally gets underway tomorrow. Later today: Some 2008 draft talk, as some decisions are due.
- Around here: Discussion of the Travis Hamonic signing and ceiling here ... another fantastic tear-jerker Cup commercial from the NHL (that still ignores the Isles, but at least recognizes McNulty Guerin and the Devils) ... oh, about those history commercials.
- The NHL's scouting combine blog is pretty useful, with great stuff from Brandon Gormley and Kiril Kabanov (look under the May 26 entries); are you buying what Kabanov is selling? Meanwhile, the Pronger anecdote is funny; his first physical with the Blues was a disaster that caused Mike Keenan to erupt.
- Sticking with the draft, here's the WHL's profile of Nino Niederreiter. And Fanhouse's own top 35.
- Free agent dreaming: Dean Lombardi sounds worried about losing Alex Frolov to a big offer from the KHL ... Manny Malhotra expects a raise but really wants to stay in San Jose ... Anton Volchenkov sounds as good as gone from Ottawa. So: Who do you want? Who are you willing to overpay?
- Where were you on May 24, 1980? [Point Blank] I was too young to know what my father was about to get me into; my hazy memories begin in 1982-ish, but mostly '83. It was tough when I internalized Cup finals appearances don't happen every year ... or every decade.
- If you missed them: Jyri Niemi's local Saskatoon story on his trade and contract. ... and the Islanders official site's great series continued with Micheal Haley on his first NHL game ... and buzz about where Hamonic will start his career.
- A great read: Phil Esposito on his team, the Lightning, and what they need. (Goaltending, for one.)
- Fatherhood has made John Madden soft.

So
We need the salary anyway to reach floor. I think we need to spend 15 million to reach floor. Lets say it’s a streit like 5 year 5.3 million when it ends Okposo, Tavares, Bailey, Harmonic, De Haan, and this year 1 round pick will still not be UFA’s and that’s when we need to worry about too much salary
I will be curious to see where FA prices go, but the guy is 28? and is a shut down defenseman in the prime of his career. gotta make a run at him, Isles need one and are just too small on the blueline to last in the crucible that is the playoffs…yeah I know we gotta get there first, but I like our odds next yr.
Yeah, I think the Isles are in a position where if they need to pay a little extra (and even more than their existing #1) to get a guy like that to come over, they do it. The time to is now, really, as in a few years there will be a lot of money tied up in Okposo, JT and who knows who else on their second contract.

He is exactly what we need right now
plus it pretty much frees us up to pick between Nino and Connolly at number 5.
Volchenkov
Yes even if the price goes to $5 million. But it’s probably a moot point. All this Volchenkov to Washigton talk has been floating around for a while now and where there is smoke there is probably Volchenkov in a Capitals jersey. As for Kabanov, yeah I am buying what he is selling to a certain degree. We are obviously not privy to what has gone on behind the scenes but I think it is safe to assume he has been jerked around a little bit by his home country for his decision to play in Moncton. Some of the stuff that has happened to him has probably accelerated the maturation process. If he stays on the board for an extended period of time he is definitely worth a gamble.

Kabanov is either really determined to stick in North America (and stick it to his Russian program), or really well-versed in what North Americans want to hear. I can’t wait to learn where he gets picked; someone will be taking an exciting gamble.
I should add I’m not counting on A-Train wanting to play here — but if it can be done, it’s certainly done by offering him more than anyone else can. (Can the Caps squeeze $5 million in?)

The expected $2 million bump in the salary cap certainly helps.
