Kelly H. and the HNiC were looking at a video of Billy S. slashing Lindy Ruff in the eye. Found it on You Tube. It was in a 1980 playoff game at the Coliseum with the Isles on the PK and leading 3-2. His point of reference was a slash by Anderson on Marleau. The relevant part starts about the 1:15 point.

Interesting, I’d always heard about this incident but that video is the only one I’ve seen, and it’s hard to tell how it happened.
Why exactly were the HNIC crew talking about it? Has there been controversy about Marleau and Anderson?
Also: I love hearing Dan Kelly’s voice, what an outstanding announcer, R.I.P.

Look at the HNiC broadcast
I posted the link at the end of the fanshot. At about the 1:15 mark, Kelly H. shows video of Anderson catching Marleau in the face with his stick as Marleau skates by. Kelly then shows the Smith-Ruff footage. The video shows Ruff in front of Smith’s crease, jousting with Smith as was usual with opposing forwards. As the action moves away from the crease, Ruff skates away and, as he does, Smith’s stick comes up and catches Ruff around the eye. Ruff than turns around and tackles Smith.
Ah, I thought that link was to the same YouTube video. I’ll change it to an active hyperlink.
I know the visuals of the Smith-Ruff incident — they’re right there — but the image quality is poor, so it was never clear to me how bad the initial encounter was (i.e. their normal jousting vs. a deliberate stick to the face).

He definitely sticked him deliberately
Whether he intended to catch him in the face…with Billy anything is possible. That was part of his charm as it were. Kelly speculates that he did not intend to hit him in the face. It was lightning quick though: if you blinked, you missed it. Not hard to see how the refs missed it.
