Oh hey look, it's the lovely joy of MSG+2! The Rangahs and dem Devils get the primo MSG and singular plus slots tonight. That may even be a better game.

If you missed it in the preview comments, (and not to promote it just because it quotes by borderline Dane-ophile love of Frans, but hey: It's Frans!), Kent of Flames Nation had a stat-oriented look at the Selke qualifications of Frans Nielsen.

...and 50 seconds later: 1-1

Flames get it right back. Dawes on a great drive-by deflection in front of Flood, for Flood’s first NHL minus.

Wow.

Two minutes extra for unsportsmanlike. Really? Some ref trying to make a statement after just calling him for two consecutive penalties?

Tonight's refs
  1. Kevin Pollock
  2. Chris Rooney

I think Pollock made the initial call (which was horrible), but they went to commercial, so I’ve no idea why he got the extra and from whom.

Stupid autofill

Okposo yapped at the ref

Okposo must have really hurt his feelings complaining about the call.

I saw him smiling sarcastically

But really now. And both are pretty bad, but I expected it’d be Rooney to overreact.

Nielsen giving it to Sutter

I’m not sure it’s a very good sign that Frans is one of the scrappier players on the team.

Some players on this team are at a point where they are gonna have to do their own fighting

in order to earn some space and respect. Okposo is one of those guys who’s at that point. Not to say he has to fight every night or be the teams enforcer. Just has to show he’s not afraid to drop em.

by Chickendirt on Mar 25, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Liked seeing Okposo go after Avery last night. Need a little more, but it’s a good sign. They need to “become men.”

PK gets the hard hat for period 1

Six minutes in penalties to kill off, all by Okposo. The PK unit kept it a game.

Comeau, Comeau

In a nutshell
  • Trent Hunter gets a goal from banging around the net. The Flames answer back within a minute.
  • Then the Flames spend six minutes of PP time in the first — all Okposo penalties — but the PK kills ’em
  • Nystrom scores on a net crasher for a 2-1 Flames lead in the 2nd
  • Moulson answers with a net-crasher in the first minute of the 3rd.

by David Hanssen on Mar 25, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

His second penalty was an absolute joke

Just a total misread by the ref.

Then he skated to the box with a big sarcastic smile, and they cut away to commercial. Don’t know if he kept yapping, but he hardly looked like a guy who’d lost his cool.

Lighthouse Hockey: What's wrong with lotteries? I've been in lots of lotteries.

Nystrom the Younger

Loved the intermission interview, by the way. Great stuff. Maybe it’s just me, but I figured the reason Bobby was the most subdued celebrant of the Nystrom clan was because he didn’t want to be cheering a goal against the Isles too demonstratively at the Coliseum.

Would they unretire the number if he was signed this summer?

by David Hanssen on Mar 25, 2010 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I spent the intermission thinking about it

Do the Stastny — oh wait, Colorado never kept Stastny’s number retired. They only retired Bourque’s number for a season and a quarter of work, but not for the guy who defined the franchise for a decade.

Lighthouse Hockey: What's wrong with lotteries? I've been in lots of lotteries.

by Dominik on Mar 25, 2010 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

See, that I dunno how to feel about it… I can understand why they would retire it but at the same time I can understand why they wouldn’t. After all Stastny played for Les Nordiques, not for the Avs. I don’t think the Hurricanes still honor Rick Ley, Gordie Howe or John McKenzie’s retired numbers from The Whalers.

We're doomed. Doomed!

by David Hanssen on Mar 25, 2010 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see that. But I could have handled a hiatus, at least. And I was a big Stastny fan. And I was appalled when they rushed Bourque’s number up there; that just reeked of expansion-like gimmick.

Not to mention they played that stupid song by Lifehouse every friggin commercial break that year. I loved Ray Bourque, even though he was a B, I loved the way he played and still have a ton of respect for him. But yeah, thanks ESPN.

We're doomed. Doomed!

by David Hanssen on Mar 25, 2010 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright, I know this is off topic, but after looking for the Whaler’s retired numbers I wound up looking at the 84-85 roster, and Jesus if they had just kept on to some of these guys they probably would still be in Connecticut not Raleigh:

21 year old Ron Francis
20 year old Ray Ferraro
20 year old Sylvain Turgeon
20 year old Ulf Samuelsson
19 year old Sylvain Cote

That was quite the good young core to build around, too bad the franchise was mismanaged so poorly.

We're doomed. Doomed!

There's something really stinky and smelly about the reffing in this game

Do one of these refs have monsy on this game?

Earlier one of the linesmen screened Comeau in the NZ.

Then there was the BS call on Okposo.

I gotta see this highstick replay.

by Chickendirt on Mar 25, 2010 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

Generally, these two stink of incompetence

But maybe they have some action on the game. Guess we’ll see how many more PPs the Flames get!

Not much chemistry from Tamby/JT/Comeau tonight

Not saying it’s Tambellini’s fault, but they don’t have a rhythm. Glad Gordon has stuck with it though. No point trying it if you just break it up after two shifts.

Got wrapped up in something

And totally forgot about this game – pleasantly surprised to see a “W.”

Game winning goal by Bruno? I’ll take it! Oh, and Marty was in goal! And Hunter got his 10th! And Matty Mo keeps creeping toward 30!

Crud, I really wish I had watched this one.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
