A look Back at Close Games

The Islanders have had 38 1 goal games this year, and won 16 of them. I decided to make a list of all them, and included two goal games in which the Islanders lost the game in the 3rd (or it involved an empty netter against the Isles.) Since I was going through the box scores of every game anyway, I also compiled a list of who assisted on everyone's goals.

I think the 16-22 record in one goal games is just a result of a young team that is just having a problem scoring. Lets say we where 22-16 winning 4 games we lost in regulation and 2 we won in overtime/shootout that would give us 10 more points and put us in about 8th in the playoffs. I think that one more year of exprerience and maybe a veteran scoring winger and/or Seguin, Hall or Nino will put us over the hump and right on the cusp on making the playoffs, or at least I hope.

Also we are one Tampa bay point a way and maybe 2 Toronto wins from the number 2 spot. What does it say about Tampa that they get 2 straight top 2 picks and are looking at another one with the 3rd pick right now. They have tons of scorers, a couple of good defensmen and they still are a bad team. Hard to believe this team won just before the lockout.

I think it's mostly to do with inexperience/lack of talent, too

As for Tampa Bay: It’s incredible, but I blame Feaster for putting them in a cap fix first by piling up three huge contracts without securing a goalie, and then worse blame falls on the Koules/Barrie ownership sideshow that mismanaged so much. They’ve essentially wasted three years of St. Louis and Lecavalier’s prime. But with Stamkos, Hedman and another top-six (?) pick, they should have all the pieces to rebound. Not sure Tocchet is the right guide there though.

Holy cow, WebBard

That’s a lot of work!

On the whole, it’s a really wide spread of scenarios — coming back to tie but lose in OT/SO, coming back just to make it look “close,” pulling ahead in tie games, etc. We probably get caught up in blown third period leads because those are the worst scenarios, when in reality as a weaker club the Islanders just play a lot of close games — sometimes ending up on top, more often ending up on the bottom.

Thanks, It was annoying me to no end that it was impossible to get all the right information together. Everywhere lists OT losts as OTLs, but Shootout Wins and OT Wins are both listed just as wins. Plus after looking up the stats of how the Islanders were doing going into the 3rd I was wondering what the reality of the situation was.

Also, most promising was going through the goals – assists. If you charted them its obvious that different people got hot at different times. If everyone gets going on the same time this can be a dangerous team.

Come on Isles! 11-0-0 or 10-0-1 I'm not picky! Playoffs!

The NHL’s site has come a long way, but man there are still so many categories and searches I’d like to be able to grab without digging game-by-game.

I HATE that.

wonder what our shootout record is with #15 in/out of the lineup?

“Schremp Signs”

That’s just cruel. Web headline writing is an art that tends toward the misleading “click here!” style.

I know if they had said “Shremp Signing” I would not have reacted the way I did when I saw it.
Like I said over on CBs blog, the only explanation I can think of is that whoever writes for the website (perhaps the ever-elusive author of “Islanders Authorized”?) must have gotten a good laugh thinking of how fans wuld react when they saw it.

Interestingly we’re 6-2 at home in Shootouts and 1-4 when away.

Although Schremp is tied for 10th with 5 SO Goals, Nielsen is tied for 3rd in the league with 6 SO Goals. They are a nice little combo.

Great Fanpost WebBard

Now, for your next trick, figure out where the Isles would be if the post-ringers that plagued them for a few weeks had all been goals instead :)

But seeing something like this really gives me a lot of hope for next season, draft be damned – there’s good stuff to work with on this team.

I seriously wanted to study this- post hits per game- but there is simply nowhere from which one can compile the data.
