Feathers, not dots: Second City Hockey
Looking at the schedule, we always knew this day would be crazy, but damn: A trade, some rumors, and the small little matter of a game involving a whole lot of returning Olympians.
For those of you arriving without following hockey news all day, there actually wasn't a whole lot of movement outside of the Andy Sutton trade. You may hear of rumors about Dwayne Roloson to Philadelphia that got a lot of traction. I wouldn't say there's no smoke there, but the strongest-sounding rumors -- that a deal was all but sealed -- appear to be unfounded, as refuted by multiple MSM sources including: Bob McKenzie, beat guys for the Flyers Anthony SanFilippo and Tim Panaccio, and Katie Strang and Arthur Staple at Newsday.
As to the voracity of the original rumors? Well, Garth Snow and company have reason to misdirect, and staffers have motive to play; I'm not too worried about trade details until they're signed off by the NHL anyway. It's fun trying to figure what's what this time of year.
Almost lost in this shuffle? Rick DiPietro was placed on IR, retroactive to before the Olympic break. Dustin Kohn comes back up to replace Sutton, leaving the islanders at a 22-man roster heading into tomorrow's deadline.

That is correct Garth. The fact that you are young in addition to undersized and lacking the skill that approximately 26 teams have more of means that you can’t win hockey games. However, I never count them out because we have seen what Gordon’s “system” (man I hate saying that) can bring.

The only “anchor” they have is the Briere contract, but that would be crazy. He’s still useful and the Flyers don’t seem like the type who worry about the cap several years down the line. And the loss of offense vs. the upgrade in goal wouldn’t seem to match.

If you’re referring to Chicago, yes they’ll have to make some cuts. Getting rid of Huet’s $5.6m would make that easy. Ohh, and that’s right: Barker’s removal helped.

If I recall, the complaint was that most of those were piled up in the non-competitive sweep of Montreal, and not the 7-gamer with the Hurricanes.

That would make sense, but from what I watched of the BOS/CAR series you could call out plenty of BOS players for not showing up. They really only played good games in 5 and 6 I thought.

I think that’s the deal with almost any series loss. Call out anyone and say “he doesn’t show up in X moment.” Well, when your team is outscored and outplayed, everybody generally looks like shit, don’t they.
The feigned certainty in hockey analysis is way overblown, in my view. I’d sooner trust observation of a guy’s decision-making and mechanics than the proverbial sweeping statement about how he performs in games where the other team knows it needs to stop him to win. But I’m a fan of ambiguity.

…of course the flip-side to this is for your very top players, you really do need them to be able to perform even under the toughest focused checking. At least, if you want me to pay you premium dollar on your second contract, you better show me that at least.

Definitely agree with that as well. But the best players can’t do it alone. Ovechkin was the leading scorer in the Caps/Pens playoff series last year, and we all know how that turned out.

I agree with that. I’d add that so many of the “objective” stats we look at are the product of a bunch of interrelated factors. Goalies are the easy example, are their numbers because the D in front of them is good/bad? Or is it because of the goalie? It’s a mix of both.

Oh yeah. I love the objective stats, but I still look at them as kind of a loose guide, see if there’s a trend. So many variables in this game. Figuring out what’s going on for sure is like interpreting the motives of a crazy girlfriend.

One of the most frustrating things....
One of the most frustrating things about being an Islander fan is the lack of a radio station in the NYC area. I check the Am, and then the FM dial up and down, but could not hear the Islanders. Would you believe I heard the Toronto-Carolina game though?
I know the Isles have a radio station, and I’ve heard it while sitting in the Coliseum parking lot. Is that the extent of its strength?
Appearance is everything. And if they can’t get a decent radio station, God elp this team.

That’s amazing. That’s actually why I stopped listing the station in the game previews. So many stations constantly switching, and from all accounts the signal is wholly unreliable.

I disagree I think Biron is a better fit for the team than Rollie...
Rollie needs to play every day with DP in and out that will never happen. Biron is a great back up and a good 1b, perfect fit for his talent.
I could see Biron re-signing next year if Roloson is gone. DP’s an unknown and Biron has probably learned a lesson about his market value.

They did, but...
The Olympians actually looked good. Really the game changed when Niemi allowed a couple stinkers, and then Huet joined the party.

I was just thinking, its amazing how bad/ playoff untested the West’s goalies are…
San Jose – Nabokov – Choker
Chicago – Huet and Nimi – Just No
Vancouver – Luongo – Choker
Phoenix – Bryzgalov – untested
LA – Quick – untested
Colorado – Anderson – Untested
Nashville – Rinne – Untested
Detroit – Osgood or Howard – Not pretty
And that’s the current 1-8 seed. I really think Luongo might do it this year and get them to the Finals.
