If he is Irish, he’s probably Scots-Irish. Linguistic class is kicking in – Mac and Mc are used about the same in the Scottish clan system, Mac usually means someone high in the clan, closely related to or the head of the family. Mc is used by those lower on the totem pole, and they were the ones kicked off their land and settled in Ulster by the English during the diaspora.

Well played!

That just doesn’t get old.

Back to my original point, I just enjoyed the chance to see Frans on the point — and it’s something I would have never thought of. Don’t know about the point shot (but then Weight didn’t have one), but he has sneaky hands that can deliver a pass, and in terms of a forward on the point, we know he views defensive responsibility as his personal obligation. So we’re good there.

Didn't feel like a typical 3rd-period collapse

Not with all those penalties. But it did start to feel inevitable: Biron had to make a lot of crazy saves through traffic before they finally broke through.

And then that Bruno OT turnover…ugh.

I didn’t have the benfit of watching the game, but it “sounded” like they were playing pretty solid..especially with some of the saves Biron was making. Nice to see JT get a little bit of a second wind toward the end of the season.

by BringBackBobby on Mar 20, 2010 12:44 AM EDT reply actions

I agree. He was just brutal.. You know I would like to have Amac heathly.. I do not wish anyone to get hurt, but if Amac was healthy. Bruno should have been in the press box.

by Marcos V on Mar 20, 2010 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Welcome, Marcos

Thanks for joining.

Seems like an eternal up and down cycle with Gervais. Which game was it recently when he was +2, two points, and singlehandedly defeated the opponent’s forecheck on Okposo’s goal? (Must’ve been Philly, I think.) The inconsistency is maddening.

Lighthouse Hockey: What's wrong with lotteries? I've been in lots of lotteries.

by Dominik on Mar 20, 2010 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions

The biggest part of Brunos inconsistency is playing so much at the most vital of times.

Amac was healthy. Bruno should have been in the press box.

Marcos, I do not think Bruno would be in the press box… but IMO he would not have been the one out there in times like that if not for the injuries, trades, demotions, and inexperience of the ISles 09-10 defense.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

by TheMetalChick on Mar 20, 2010 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions

If Brutal Bruno

is on this team next year, then Garth needs to be fired. There isn’t a worse defenseman in the NHL. What does he do well? He’s not an offensive threat, not a big checker, not good with positioning, and certainly not good under pressure. He’s an AHL player.

Fiya Minaya.

by BringBackBobby on Mar 20, 2010 3:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Gervais is certainly not the worst defenseman in the NHL. Did some of you even notice what great games he has had lately? The kid is just never going to be a top minutes, out there in the toughest situations kind of player. He is only used in those kinds of situations right now because the Isles have very few options.

IMO it is unfair for a player to be asked to do more than they are used to/capable of and then blame them when they dont excel. If Bruno was getting Bruno-appropriate ice time and situations, he would not be the flavor of the month scapegoat for the Isles shitty defensive situation.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

by TheMetalChick on Mar 20, 2010 3:27 AM EDT up reply actions

There isn’t a worse defenseman in the NHL.

Oh my, there are plenty.

TMC has a point — when he’s asked to play above his paygrade, he can do it in spurts before problems arise.

Honestly, the OT turnover was a huge mistake, but it’s also one 95% of the league has done at one time or another. This game is a constant process of understanding what you’re capable of, then having the confidence to try more, then getting pushed back when you’ve done too much. Bruno’s journey is one that hundreds of lower-pairing defensemen have traveled before him.
