Weight is out for the season

Via Katie Strang

As much as I like Weight, I think now would be the perfect time to step down as captain and hand the reins over to Kyle Okposo. If nothing else it will give Isles fans something to cheer for. Maybe a desire to see how the new "C" adjusts to his role will put some more butts in the seats at NVMC now that the playoffs are effectively out of the picture.

Another one bites the dust

Interesting. For his chances to continue his career, he probably needed to this now to get started on rehab. For his sake, I hope this wasn’t the end.

I’m not in a rush to name Okposo captain. I understand he’s likely the heir apparent, but at 21 I’d prefer not to add it to his plate already this season.

Like I said on the other thread, I think the timing of this surgery dictates that the Isles might bring him back if he is up for it physically. Recovery from surgery like this takes about six months, so the timing here would mean that he could be all ready to go for camp.

If Doug is up for it physically I would have ZERO problem iwht him coming back. He has already shown that he is perfectly happy taking a lesser role and helping the young kids develop on a struggling team. How many admired, champion, cup-winning vets would not only be content but be vocal and proud of being in that very situation?

Like Dom, I am in no rush to make Kyle Captain, either. It will happen in time. Let the kid figure out how to score goals first before you put the whole team on his 21yo shoulders.

If Doug is up for it physically I would have ZERO problem with him coming back.

Particularly if he were “fixed” and better than this year. He still has the stickhandling and the presence, and he’s had no complaint with a reduced role. But it’s going to be really interesting, since his rehab will likely finish when teams already have pretty full rosters. Could be a training camp tryout scenario.

Even this year he didnt do as bad as it seems (when he actually played.) He still was a point every other game player- for a 39yo guy playing fewer minutes on lower lines there is nothing wrong with that.

I think if he is good enough to play, he plays here. I noticed that all the Isles yung kids who were asked said that they want him to come back. I also noticed that a number of them said that Doug took them under his wing. Doug has some big wings to make each of these kids feel that special. :)

Maybe I'm optimistic

But rather than crumbling under the added pressure, I feel like added responsibility might catalyze KO and give him that extra nudge toward being the player we know he can be.

Who should be captain now: Streit, Streit, Streit, Streit, Streit, Streit, Streit, Streit, Streit.

Seriously, Streit should be captain. He is the best defender, is responsible, plays like a leader and would be nice to everyone (being Swiss and all…).

Okposo will be one of the future potential captains – but he isn’t a lock over all the other players and its not worth declaring that he is now.

From the outside, I’m in favor of that. For the traditional route, Streit’s position and Okposo’s position in their careers seem to make that succession ideal.

But I keep getting the sense the org. feels differently. Just with the rumblings and the occasions Gordon and Snow praise KO’s growth “in the room,” I can’t help thinking they see him as another young captain to be signed and "C"d soon and for the long term.

I hope not, I honestly think that to ‘C’ Okposo so soon may harm his development – and what do you do if Bailey or some draftee plays with more leadership than Okposo in the future? Streit – then Okposo makes more sense. I just hope the organisation takes the captaincy question seriously and not as a marketing opportunity…

On that note, the summer before the murmur was “Bailey is a future captain.” I just don’t see the need to force these things. Richards and Crosby in Pennsylvania have each had their lumps learning on the job — it seems like these decisions have been rooted in a cap-era desire to lock young stars up and ordain them their Yzerman.

the summer before the murmur was "Bailey is a future captain."

So true. I dont exclude it, either… Josh is a great kid.

Thats what happens when your team drafts with character as a very high priority. It really is remarkable how many prospects and players the Isles have in their organization who are Captains and demonstrate that kind of character.

+1

This is exactly my view of the Isles future.

I like Pappa Dougie

but he shouldn’t necessarily be GIVEN a spot. A captain who hasn’t really earned a roster spot isn’t going to command a lot of respect. Even the ones on the team who are close to him will know at some level that his roster slot is an emeritus deal….and that would necessarily diminsh his effectiveness as captain.

Agreed, BC. I just think that, IF Doug rehabs well enough to still play hockey, he can earn a spot on this team. Its not like we are expecting him to be on the top line.

fair enough

they should probably give him a tryout contract and, if all goes well, a one year deal.
