Minor Swap: Greg Moore to Blue Jackets (Syracuse) for D Dylan Reese, Radja

Michael Fornabaio described this aptly in his initial post, I think: "For defensive depth." Center Greg Moore goes to Columbus (where he is assigned to AHL Syracuse) while defenseman Dylan Reese heads this way. I suppose you can read this re-allocation of forward to D as a sign that maybe, just perchance, a defenseman is headed out the Islanders' organizational door. We'll see; Bridgeport already had a lot of D (and unless I'm mistaken, Dustin Kohn hasn't played there during the Olympic break).

Reese is already 25, listed at 6'1", 201 lbs., and collects his share of assists in the AHL. He was also a {gulp} Rangers draft pick, 7th round (209 overall) back in 2003. Moore was Bridgeport's fifth-leading scorer this year by points, but is also a minus-15. Meanwhile, as Fornabaio noted of Reese: "On a very-minus Crunch team, he was plus-12."

UPDATE: Fornabaio reports that center Mike Radja is the other piece coming from Syracuse in the deal.

Kohn hasn’t played since the break. He was assigned to Bridgport so he could practice with the team but the Brass didn’t want him playing in games in case they needed him in case Hillen’s recovery not coming along as expected or someone was traded. As I said in the last thread, this seemingly minor move isn’t so minor upon further review. I believe this is a precursor to Sutton getting traded for a young forward/pick (Fleischmann or Fehr from Wash?)

I’m not convinced this relates to Sutton; it could just be an AHL shuffle. Bridgeport already has so many defensemen, and they’ve basically played over a month without Kohn’s services. It’s interesting that they’ve had trouble scoring, and out goes Moore. Opportunity opens, I guess.

On the back end, the Canucks may be kicking tires on either of Florida Panther pair Dennis Seidenberg (28-years-old), Carolina’s Aaron Ward (37) and the Islanders Andy Sutton (34) – all are in the final years of their current contracts. But are those players an upgrade on what the Canucks already have in terms of defensive depth?

From Jeff Paterson on the Canucks’ website. He’s suggesting they might part with Corey Schneider, their stud keeper prospect for defensive help. If that’s what they’re offering, Big Andy isn’t going to the Pacific Northwest.

thanks for pointing out that quote, btw. i skimmed through that earlier and didn’t pay close attention to that.
we do have some depth on defense, but it doesn’t help when Bieksa and Mitchell are both injured. Bieksa is already back practicing with the team, but Mitchell is really far behind (we were expecting him to be coming back about now), so we need a little help on D to make a push for and into the playoffs.
Corey Schneider is a great prospect, but with Luongo signing a 12-year contract, Corey’s now trade bait. We also have Mathieu Schneider hanging around in Manitoba waiting to be traded (he doesn’t want to be a Canuck anymore), and we have a few forwards as well (*cough Bernier, Wellwood, Manitoba players *cough)…..

Can we have Kesler if we ask nice? (Puts down the acid blotter).

I’ll take your 12 year contract and raise you 15! While I think Scheinder will be a good starting keeper somewhere, the Isles invested too much in not only DiPi but Koskinen, Nilsson, Poulin and Ridderwall as well. It would have to be picks and/or a young forward in return. Do you think the Canucks would part with Jannik Hansen?

Ha, maybe. Get Peter Regin and Hansen and the Isles can have the Great Dane line (Bad Joke).

Something tells me that Sutton will go to Washington

He’d be a massive upgrade for them over Erskine. I say this is where Snow gets his late first rounder. Makes the most sense.

Chips starting to fall

Grebeshkov was traded from Edmonton to Nashville today, for a 2nd rd pick (per TSN).

Chicago and STL swapped prospects (including Hannu Toivonen).

And Bobby Hughes has gone all the way from Utah to the CHL’s Wichita Thunder. ….

All in the last two days. Jeezy Chreezy, I think they were afraid they’d be slow to the draw if they didn’t all hop on the trade table at once to kick it off. Should be an exciting build up to the deadline.

Juha Toivonen and Mike Mole are stashed down there too, this is like the Isles super scrub league!

Anaheim is clearing salary, trading Evgeni Artyukhin to Atlanta for a depth defenseman and a conditional pick. Ducks clear roughly $1 Mil on the cap by moving Artyukhin.

Sportsnet buried a Chris Chelios sighting in their trade report of the ANA-ATL deal. Quietly reported that Chelios finally signed a deal with the Thrashers, nobody has been able to confirm at the point of this post however.

Mike Radja

comes in from Syracuse as part of the Reese-Moore trade. This per Fornabaio. This might not impact the big club ever, but can’t complain about a two for one that adds some ability to Bport. Well played…well played.

What did you think of Moore when you saw him?

You know, I still don’t know completely. He’s a bit of an in-betweener if it’s fair to call him that Dom. He could play more to his fairly decent size (6’1 230ish), but he still has the ability to playmake on the wing or at center. In my opinion (and obviously I’m not scout), he’ll never be an NHL guy, because he’s made better by the players around him. With that said, if you give him guys that can finish a play, he can be a great facilitator without the attention. I guess he’s just one of those guys that has peaked already.

Thanks for that. Yeah, I never thought much about him from his profile (not having seen him, except in NHL exhibition) — just sounded like a guy whose ceiling is the AHL.

Moore did formally play for Hartford Wolfpack (AHL) but spent about 6 games or so with the Rangers. Out of those 6 he was 2 on his +/. I’ve seen him play several times, Definate AHL’r. (Sorry Greg.)
