I linked these in the game recap, but if you missed them, here are three interesting and complementary takes on the likely next development in the Lighthouse Project saga (after Charles Wang's pre-emptive mini-strike on air last night): Hockey Independent, plus Islanders Point Blank, and Let There be Light(house).

Update: Sure enough, Kate Murray plans a press conference Monday a.m., announcing scaled-down zoning plans.

Nick is the greatest...but

Nick,
I may have said this before… but it’s still true. Your efforts, and the efforts of many fans, and Long Islanders have been tremendous. But I have to remain on the other side of this issue.
1. Maybe a sports arena that means 17000 very temporary residents and NO ACCESS TO MASS TRANSIT is not in the final picture.
2. A refurbished NVMC may not be the answer for the Islanders as a self sustaining entity. Look at the Caps, they went where the people were and could get to. Try to get cap tickets now that they have a contender. the Isles could fill a 25K seat venue with mass transit and a contender.
3. I just feel bad for the people of LI who could really use the jobs.
4. I’d hate to pay $2M for a condo and have the heat go out in February. I mean given the way the coliseum ice has been handled… “I don’t care if the county says it’s my problem, it’s their problem… but I can get you a room at the Marriot for $299 a night. the heat works over there, and there is some room in the new section I built for intoxicated Islander fans who can’t drive home from the games.”
5. If Tampa can find a new owner, so can the Islanders. The Islanders are in a GREAT hockey market and have an opportunity to move into the biggest city in the world. Wang may look like a savior to some, but I can’t help but think he’s a roadblock. [for the Islanders AND for developing that parcel of land in Nassau County] I’m probably wrong as usual, but that’s been my position for three years, and I’m gonna stick to it until somebody proves me wrong.

Wang or no Wang

this team’s future home will be alongside another blue and orange sporting franchise…where there is plenty of access to mass transit.

The Islanders are in a GREAT hockey market

Only when and if the Islanders move towards the city will they be in a “great” hockey market. Currently the Islanders are 3rd of the 3 teams in the NY area. If anything, the Isles are a small team market, being carried on TV by a company who’s focus is not on the Islanders, but the true “big Market” team, the Rags…
Speaking of TV, the three major networks don’t cover the Isles with any one reporter, they just report the score and make smart remarks at how bad they are. I cannot say anything about Long Island’s channel 12 as it isn’t carried in Queens.
I am one of the few people that suggest the team move next to Citi Field. Wang & Co. may have to buy the land or pay rent on it. After Wang & Co. build their dream hockey paradise, they will only pay taxes to the city, state & fed. With the County of Nassau, Town of Hempstead and Village of Uniondale dragging their collective feet on a deal that was proposed many years ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if the team moved. Along with the SMG deal. (how did i forget that!) To parody a famous Tom Hanks movie, “Run Wang Run” Leave the NVMC to its occasional concerts and fabulous home shows. LOL

actually Queens has offered to build an arena

I agree that Queens is a better location by far…but the ultimate way to build a fanbase is to start winning consistently. When the team was on its recent run, they actually had some sellouts. This team starts winning consistently and they will pack ’em in at NVMC as well.

by BCISLEMAN on Feb 7, 2010 11:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes... GREAT

Marty, I definitely agree that Queens is the best for the team. That adds so much potential from the boroughs and doesn’t leave Nassau and Suffolk in the cold. The boroughs are, and always have been part of that market, but they’ve been untapped for 38 years.
As an Islander fan from Brooklyn the Isles did everything possible to alienate me. While my relatives on LI got to see every game on cable… we had no cable.
When the team was great, they had a great cable deal, and filled the house… who cared about the Brooklyn.
When they started to build fans in the boroughs, and could have really used that ticket revenue they were a long drive away, and an even longer drive home. But who cared… the ownership just cared about getting that check from cablevision.
More recently Wang was giving away tickets and couldn’t fill the barn. Now that they will have an opportunity to right all of that he only cares about building a city… GREAT… build the city, but leave the Islanders out of it.

Queens is the best option.

It’s true. The questions are the following:

1. When will Wang commit to it? The longer he stalls, the less time he has to get the County to change the plans from Convention center to Coliseum.
2. Queens would like to have the Isles, but i suspect Wang would still have to fund part of the new coliseum in Willets Point. Could he do so? Would there be problems there?
3. Get the NHL’s approval.

IMO, Wang should cut the lighthouse Now. He’s going based on pride alone right now, and really has nothing going. The longer he goes, the more likely he’ll have less options when our lease ends. The less options he has, the more likely the team moves to Kansas City.

And we don’t want that.

by garik16 on Feb 7, 2010 11:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kansas City or another city is my worst fear. As eccentric as Wang could be, If he sold the team, then the new owner may move the team.
In regarding to needing the NHL’s approval, The team’s name can remain the same as they will still be on the island. Because the Islander’s paid off the Rags when the team was created, there would be no payment necessary.
A: The city doesn’t need a convention center
B: Wang & Co. can include a convention center is their project.
In previous years, the republicans and democrats have used MSG. No reason why the new arena couldn’t draw these conventions. Lord knows there are enough hotels in the Laguardia and JFK airport areas.

Look at it this way. However you get to the hockey game can be the same or better. 4 Highways. An exit off the Van Wyck and GCP for Northern Blvd.
Work in the city? Perfect! The #7 has an express that stops at the foot of Willets Blvd. Coming for the island by train? Change at Woodside for the Port Washington branch.
Never again will those w/o cars wait an hour for a crowded bus. (70-71-72)

Those are three huge questions. I’m not too worried about #3 (NHL approval), but #1 and #2 make me nervous. I do believe Wang wants to do right by the Islanders though; he’s just a little … unpredictable.

K.C. types don’t make me too nervous: I suspect most potential owners would look at this situation and think their best shot at ROI is in New York — particularly closer to the city. But weird stuff can happen, and as we’ve seen with Balsillie, a determined potential owner can create a lot of friction in a hurry.

yeah but

Balsillie was attempting to take a team from a moribund market to the Center of the Hockey Universe…and even that got slapped down. This would be taking it away from a great hockey market with all kinds of tradition and one of the great rivalries in all sports to a place where professional hockey has never done anything but fail. Isn’t going to happen.

LI Herald story

Is here:

A Hempstead Town Council vote on Tuesday would all but certify its intent to consider only a scaled-back version of the Lighthouse project….
…"We will be paying [the consultant] to make a zone to create a development that we believe the board can live with, one we believe the residents can live with, and yet at the same time a project that would take in a number of the elements that Wang has proposed," Murray said. "It isn’t going to be the same, but a scaled-down version."

You just know Wang isn’t going to be thrilled. Wang has all along asked for the land…not any money. A tax break? Maybe.
The area by Citi Field, bordered by Willits, Roosevelt, Northern Blvd. and the river would give Wang what he wants. I don’t know the acreage, but it may be smaller than the NVMC parking lot.
But as newer arenas are being built, parking has been included as an extension to the arena—See Buffalo’s arena.
I’m sure if the city wanted to build a convention center Wang could include one. Along with residences and shops. Within the arena, there could also be team training areas.
The transportation issues have been discussed, giving New Yorkers and island people access to the arena through multiple roadways.

Obviously the possibility exists that Wang asked for more then what he wanted when it comes to the Lighthouse Project. I would expect anytime your going in front of a board like this you would ask them for more then what you need, giving you a starting point in negotiations above the line your willing to settle for.

With the team taking steps forward on the Ice, hopefully Wang doesn’t need every one of the additions in the Lighthouse project in order for the Islanders to make money.

I mean don’t the artists renditions of projects always include a lot more then what ends up there in reality? Unless of course your the Dallas Cowboys and you can spend 1.2 Billion on a stadium.

That's the curious thing

You go into something like this expecting negotiation to a middle ground. If he doesn’t have that expectation built in, there a couple theories as to why.

Reading the comments over on Bottas blog are making me want to puke.

You have to understand alot of “IF’s” fly around the Islander’ fans mind.
The team hasn’t improved as much as we have expected. There have been more fall backs to the old ways than any improvement.
Wang and the arena. I’m sure someone could write ten thousand words on the subject, but the fact is almost everything associated with it is uncertain.
For instance. What happens when every town village and county committee turns him down?
Will Wang & Co Strap his plans? Will he say forget this, and sell the team? Or will he keep the team, and move? Will he the team, and the new owner move the team?
Those are just the worries about Wang and his lighthouse plan. The team should also be worried about.
Such as: Can we trade some players that haven’t done as well for something? Anything? Will we end up bad enough for a decent draft number? Then, can the image the Isles project to everyone in the league be good enough to bring a name player in FA that isn’t just playing til he retires in a year?
God only knows. Wang didn’t let on during his interview what he might do. But any and all of the above things could happen.

I have enough gray hairs. I’ve seen good and bad Islanders teams. Maybe we are drama queens or worry-wort’s LOL. But we care. And isn’t that what it’s all about?

But we care. And isn’t that what it’s all about?

It certainly is the most important thing, Marty.
However, I think that being reactionary hurts us time and time again… yet, as a fanbase, we are ever more apt to doing exactly that.

What a colossal waste of time. This project is not going forward on Long Island.

I am under the impression

that the Isles aren’t going anywhere until 2015, when the lease expires with SMG (did they extend that recently, did I read that before the season opener?).

From what I’ve read that lease seems to be rock solid, i.e. upheld by the Nassau county supreme court. If they start construction at Willets Point next year, they’ll be ready to move in by 2015 or be able to buy out the remaining time if the project is ahead of schedule.

There you go…That’s the spirit. Let ToH think they can cut Wang’s Lighthouse down to a strip mall. And after ten years, the ToH says whats held everything up is that Wang & Co. didn’t pay for the environmental study? BS.
The Democrats waited til the Republicans were out to pull this crap.

Change at Woodside for the old Shea Stadium station! Lets Go!

It is quite solid

With the right will on both sides, they could probably get it done by 2015. Some argue that Brooklyn would be better because they’ve already cleared some of the hurdles for the Nets.

by BCISLEMAN on Feb 8, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Brooklyn, well the Long Island Railroad goes to Flatbush Ave, next to the atlantic yards where the nets arena is supposed to go, and as long as the LIRR goes there, close
enough, right? :). Incidentally, that new
arena planned for Brooklyn is three blocks away from Charles Wang’s, and my, high school, Bklyn Tech. Wang is from here, and I think he’s only using the silent acknowledgement of other cities as leverage and would take a scaled down or alternative deal before upping stakes and leaving, better in his hands than in that of a speculating carpetbagger.

Claude LaPointe didn't make as good a pun, sadly.
