On Gordon on Tambellini
Islanders Gameday: Ballad of Jeff Tambellini?

Complete Coverage >

Josh Bailey out, Jeff Tambellini in, Nate Thompson facing his old mates.

If you're visiting from Islanders Point Blank (where Chris Botta has again humbled me with kind words), this is our Lighthouse Hockey game thread. It's like an in-game, instantly updating chat, except a little more wide open, and you can reply to specific comments with quotes and links and such. Tip: The reply button is your friend. So are the other commenters on this site.

If you're commenting: Be cool. Be friendly. Be witty. Be here because you have a common interest in the success of the New York Islanders hockey club. The only reason I do this is to discuss the Islanders in a half-way coherent way, and to have a bit of fun and razzing while watching hockey with the fellas (and gals) like at your neighborhood pub.

About the site: If you have interesting links, a pic, a video, you can post them in a comment or in a FanShot with your own commentary. If you have something much longer and more elaborate to say -- an examination of roster depth or the best goaltenders in Islanders history, for example, you can post a FanPost.

Ilya Kovalchuk

Ilya Kovalchuk has been traded to the New Jersey Devils. The often speculated Ilya Kovalchuk trade is expected to be finalized tonight. Heading to Atlanta is a package that includes Johnny Oduya. Stay tuned to Hockeyleaks for the latest as it unfolds..

2-on-0?! At least it was just Lecavalier, he’s not that good or anything.

MacDonald pinched up and Bergie’s pass to him went impotent. Don’t know where the other two were.

Too bad hard work then a reward followed by a bad goal let up by Roloson and a fluke play where two men were behind the play for TB.

by rickrays on Feb 4, 2010 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like this team is headed for the lottery

Before the season I didn’t think the conference was gonna be this tight. I figured we’d have some seperation from the bottom by the time we fell out of the playoff bubble.

Well, there isn’t much seperating these teams and the Isles don’t have the talent to take a game off, mush less a shift off, and expect to win games.

Fowler her we come.

by Chickendirt on Feb 4, 2010 8:54 PM EST reply actions

Funny you mention that. The thing that worried me at the beginning of the year was I couldn’t figure out who should be at the bottom of the conference. Knew the Isles improved, but I couldn’t think of a logical bottom-feeder(s) for them to leap over.

The coach

So, what, Gordon said “Roloson: allow a bad-angle goal. Rest of you guys, someone high stick Vinny so he stays down behind the play, opening up a 2-on-0 when your pass goes awry.”?

I don’t follow the chain of blame there. They responded to a bad first period by playing very well in the 2nd — even forcing a TB timeout — until two quick plays went very wrong.

New ownership and a new GM? Both have really held that market back. They have been virtually the 1995-2005 Islanders, minus the tradition to fall back on.

One could make the same case for a lot of guys on this team

The fact that he drew a penalty was more than what you got from 50% of the team tonight.

Tamby serves as a bad sample given that he’s been in the press box for months and a good portion of this team played worse. Bergenheim, and I can’t believe he’s skated this long with no critisism, as well as Park are having worse seasons than Tambellini. And Tambellini hasn’t played as much as those guys.

by Chickendirt on Feb 4, 2010 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

by Martys301 on Feb 4, 2010 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

Look at the stats this year

He’s tied with Bergenheim in points and Bergie has played 16 more games.

Park has two more points and has played 2 more games. Not to mention one of the worst +/- on the team. That’s pretty crappy for a guy who’s supposed to reknowned for his D.

Tambellini is far from the worse player on this team.

by Chickendirt on Feb 4, 2010 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

But last year was a disaster for everyone, he was still getting jerked around at age 24, and he improved after his demotion. The ice time he got in those 65 games was the lowest of any regular forwards.

I don’t think he’s some hidden gem by any means, but I don’t think they can complete the book on him without giving him some legit time without measuring him by different standards from the rest of the team.

Hunter is a useless perimeter player

He’s EVERYTHING fans used to get on Tambellini for.

Hunter is slower than shit rolling down hill on a hot day. I don’t care how good his shot is if he rarely has the ability or sense to get into the scoring areas. Hunter has not gotten better over the years either. HE"S GOTTEN WORSE!!!!

The only reason why people like him is cause he’s like the skinniest kid at fat camp. For years this team was devoid of that kind of player. Now that Okposo has emerged Hunter doesn’t look so good. Okposo played the game we all hoped Hunter would play when he broke into the league.
