Women's Gold Medal Game [thread]
6:30 p.m. EST, MSNBC*
It's the second competitive match of the women's tournament! (I know, that's unfair.) If you're watching, here be your thread. Not sure if I will catch the ending or not, so: Avenge 2002!

In Fairness
Most of the games without Canada or USA were competitive, but some of them were a little less then watchable, and I’ll watch anything hockey.
"Martin is psychical" - In reference to Matt Martin being called up to the Islanders.

Not sure
I don’t know where I could find the stats, but PPs don’t seem to be as big in the woman’s tournament.

Something about Calgary, they feel like the Dallas Stars of a few years ago, like the Ship is just about to sink.

Dallas was almost like a retirement community

They were the Secondary retirement community, behind Detroit.

An Islanders Tie
Just found this about Angela Ruggerio
“She was the former Director of the New York Islanders’ Project Hope, as well as the New York Islanders Children’s Foundation.”

Teaching kids all over Long Island to beat each other with sticks. Could you see that ten year old you-tube video, and all the kids have the Islanders emblem on.

Cammi Granato
I remember in the 98 Olympics they made a big deal about her being a Granato, but I remember there was another women’s player that was related to a NHL’er.
btw, shame on her for not mentioning the controversy surrounding her being left off the 2006 team while analyzing what happened to team USA at the 2006 Games and the changes they have made since then. Just because I call out Milbury on the same thing.

Man, I don’t think they can come back from 2 down, let alone if it goes up to 3 down.
Refs miss another offsides, yay.
Should have gotten men’s refs to do this game.
Please NBC, Fire Milbury, Hire Roenick Full time!!!
Most of us grew up with NHL rules. This is the Olympics, and they go by “international” rules. so go figure

That was horrible
Net was off its Mooring for a good 2-3 minutes. Its the other end of the ice sure, but that was horrible.

Oh and when the ref-line person noticed, the USA was penalized with a face off in their end.

Yes, I know what a natural hat trick is...
You really don’t have to point out that its a natural hat tricks. Its a Hat Trick unless she adds an empty netter to her total, which isn’t going to happen till the end of the game possibly. Same on a shootout goal.

she did keep it 2-0. But we look like the Russians against the Canadien men…frustrated.

I’d say more like US Vs Swiss round 2, before we finally beat Hiller.

No matter how good or bad the goalie, they will always look good if you hit them in the crest all game long. I know the American woman are good. They didn’t get here by a fluke. Just calm down on the PP and no flubbing easy passes.

Way too many BS penalties (both ways) for a Gold Medal game.

Oh Well
Team USA should be happy, the Silver and they are a really young team. Some great bounces went Canada’s way.
Please NBC, Fire Milbury, Hire Roenick Full time!!!
maybe they can hire some referees for the next Olympics
Change at Woodside for the old Shea Stadium station! Lets Go!
Someone’s going to have to explain to me why they can’t use refs from the Men’s side of things. Or for that matter why there’s only one ref instead of two.
Please NBC, Fire Milbury, Hire Roenick Full time!!!
Maybe tonight’s ref had a plane to catch. no other bullshit reason for not calling anything.
After tonight’s display, the ref gets to parade with the victors.
Get out of the sticks, Charles, move to Queens!!
Now, Marty
The bad was cutting both ways. US had TWO 5 on 3s.

I think the problem is the need to have the referee in the GM game be from a neutral country, By definition, this means that the refereee is from a country where Women’s Hockey is not played as much as in North America.
I remember the SLC GM game, where the US referee called 13 penalties against Canada to four to the US. That put the kibosh on referees from the US or Canada in the GM game.
women’s hockey doesn’t have real professional refs.

What they really need is the 2nd ref and to use Male refs if they are short. I’m not complaining one way or another about the penalties that were called, but missing offsides, that final huge slash and Vetter not being able to get their attention when the net was off its moorings were outrageous.
I think the refs could never feel out the fine line between letting them play and making a call to bring them into line. I also think that during the 3rd they felt like any penalty they called for one side, they would have to pay back, so as the game came closer to the end they were less willing to make calls.

A silver is fantastic
And they really should be proud of themselves… even though they were expected to get the silver, so they came through as predicted. If the mens team gets the silver I know Ill be thrilled for them… because few picked them for the silver!
Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

They were all acting so cute, blowing kisses and all that lol.
Of course, they WON today.
Its so hard to take how you win for the bronze, but lose for the gold. Its such an emotional thing.
Plus, theyre chicks.

Sorry TMC, Couldn’t resist.

Finland thinks they can win in Socchi in 2014.
I hope so. Women’s hockey needs a couple of more contending teeams. Either way you cut it, it must suck to lose the only game of the year that matters.

Actually, it’s spelled “Sochi”. It’s located on the Black Sea.

Cheers to the Canadian women for what looks like a fun celebration, at least. (Naturally, the IOC is pissed.)
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
yeah well the IOC can get the heck over it, IMHO.
Those chicks totally DESERVED to celebrate!
