Olympic Hockey not filling the void of NHL hockey

Now I am a huge patriot and love my country. I served for 5 years and still stay involved with protecting the American way but I am just not into the Olympic Hockey that much. I am watching and think we have a good shot at gold, and that is somewhat exciting but not as exciting as watching the Islanders skate to a victory. Maybe it is because there are 2 Rangers on the team and no Islanders.

I would rather see the games go back to the old format, and leave the NHL alone. I am like a drug addict in withdrawl, and might lose it before 3/2 when the Islanders take up their season again.

What will happen between now and then? Who will be traded? I am about 95% sure someone is gone. Can Taveras have a positive run at the end of the season? can Rollie and DP share the goal and play well enough to win? Why wasn't DP sent to Bridgeport to play some?

Just some thoughts, missing NHL hockey

I don't know

Maybe its because I don’t have Center Ice, but this feels like the playoffs for me. Three to Four games a night and I actually care about the teams even if there are no Islanders on them.

that would be true

yeah I can see that, if I didnt have Center Ice winter would bite. I have had it for the last 4 years and would have a hard time giving it up, but it is tough paying that extra bill for it.

Center Ice

That’s a good point I hadn’t thought of. Without Center Ice for the rest of the year, these Olympics would be like a drug. There is just something about the tension and stakes of tournament hockey that is riveting.

Rickfan, I hear what you’re saying. I wasn’t very excited about the Olympics for some of the same reasons (I really don’t like the break, and I hate that the players have to forge chemistry and a system with almost zero preparation), but they do quickly hook me in. They’re like All-Star Games where the players are actually trying, so that’s a fun wrinkle for me.

I’d still much prefer a standalone World Cup tournament where they control the broadcast and time (and have preparation time, too) rather than being beholden to the IOC and NBC.

The problem is though, what do you do about players who want to play in the Olympics? I mean obviously if your making league minimum you can’t miss games. But a Crosby, Ovechkin or any of the big names can afford to be suspended/miss games and play in the Olympics. Do you just play two weeks of your season without some of the biggest names in the league? Could you imagine if the Capitals without Ovechkin go on a slide and miss the playoffs?

Obviously they have to work a better deal with NBC if NBC is going to have the next Winter Olympics and they still have the NHL. At the very least the Marquee matchups should be on NBC and Milbury should be fired.

CBA issue

I think if you did it, you’d have to negotiate it as part of the CBA so players had buy-in. (Unfortunately, it sounds like Bettman is wielding this very sword, since NHLPA participation was collectively bargained.) And if the players had buy-in, then they’d have bought into not participating.

Since the players overwhelmingly support Olympic participation, I don’t think my World Cup alternative will ever happen. They either still believe in the magic of the Olympic Games or do not fancy shortening their summer on the back end for a Canada Cup/World Cup.

My preference aside, I don’t blame players like Ovechkin who insist they will play no matter what. If he wants to do it and miss Capitals games, great; he’ll have to weigh the possible consequences to his team. His team can fine him or suspend him or do what they want.

Olympic Hockey...

….Is infinitely better than goon style NHL hockey. Faster, better strategy, more talent. Can’t wait until the game is played on International Ice sized surfaces again. Hey, I’d even go to Russkyland to watch the games at Sochi. Those that don’t like it can stay home and take in some East Coast league fights and hope that a hockey game might break out.

sorry dude, NHL much better

it is all an opinion thing, but I will take the action of th elast week over the Olympics every time. I like when a guy can check someone. I don’t want anything to do with the internation ice size or their style of game. Notice who played in the Gold Medal game, USA and Canada, the Eurotrash game as Milbury couldn’t compete against our game.

I hope you find a way to watch yur brand of hockey without ruinng mine
