I’m watching this game while packing for my 6:10 AM flight to St. Paul. This has lead to a lot of listening to the game rather than watching and I find myself angry more and more at Ed Olzyk and Pierre McGuire.

Ovechkin levels Jagr (who was trying to deke around him), Semin retrieves the puck from the left wing boards and feeds Malkin, who scores from a bad angle. Vokoun maybe should have had that, but that was a fantastic sequence for the Russians.

Serious question

In lieu of the obvious North American Armageddon-inducing hockey game, are any of the history / anthropology people here interested in checking out the King Tut special on Discovery in between? I’m of the under-the-rock DVR-less species, so i’ll be channel flipping a bit…

I’ve seen a lot of people bash him (not around here in particular) just based on not liking him as a player. But I really like him as an Analyst, and I hope they either keep him around after the Olympics or Dump Milbury.

I mean at least JR was still there at 2 in the morning friday night giving his analysis of the late game friday night. Milbury was already asleep.

That is by far his best trait. They just need someone to counterbalance MM. JR spouts his own share of cliches and “I don’t have anything here, so I’m going back to the well” thoughts, but he’s a good contrast to Milbury.

Better than Hull, I think; Hull really fell in love with his reputation of being a good quote. (Come to think of it, that’s what Hull the player was like: “I’ll just say something controversial, teammates be damned.”)

Because NBC knows Hockey can beat Sunday afternoon competition. But they also believe that all Hockey gets the same ratings, and winning ratings Sunday Afternoon is last place ratings Sunday Night.

On NBC they were just talking about what a great game it was, they went to Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth (Even though Collinsworth is a football analyst He and Michaels would probably do a better job calling the game then Doc, Olzyck and Regis) in the arena talking about the game, everyone saying what a great game it was. Maybe this will wake them up to next time actually put the game on rather then fucking Ice Dancing.

I just twitted this

But its true and works in context here “Good work NBC, highest trending twit right now is Ryan Miller. How come I don’t see anything from Figure skating Trending?”

USA! USA!

What a fantastic game all around. If these teams meet again, it will be a treat.

I can’t wait to read overreaction and histrionics in the Canadian media.

We may well have just witnessed the end of an era. Regardless of whether or not it is fair (and I actually think it IS fair), Brodeur is going to wear that one. Canada outshot US almost 2-1. Brodeur’s puckhandling failures on goals 2 and 3(esp. #3) cost the game. babckock may have a lot of patience, but I don’t think he can avoid going with Luongo in the next one and after that, they go till Luongo loses.

by Nova Scotia Isles Fan on Feb 22, 2010 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

I’ve been saying all along they should have went with Luongo. Luongo’s in his prime and doesn’t get overworked nearly as much as Brodeur.

Nova, do you think it will stick? Seems like he’s gotten into folly in the past, but the legend and now the wins record keeps him invincible. Though I guess it’s another matter when he does it for Canada vs. doing it for Jersey.

The bonus to playing Luongo is the extra commentary that you get from Milbury. I view it as twisting the dagger in him even further everytime he comes up in conversation when Mike is on the panel. If I were in the studio with him I would ask him, “hey Mike…how about that Luongo guy? He looks good doesn’t he?” just about every save he makes.

I don’t hate Mike but that was probably one of, if not, the dumbest/most anti-Canadian things he did while he was the GM/Head Coach/Tool for the Isles

In a week I’ve gotten around 30 extra hits due to a higher amount of people searching for Milbury Sucks or Milbury. Hooray for incompetency!

I really don’t have a lot against him because he thought he was doing the right thing in the eyes of the team. It is not as if he were intentionally doing those ridiculous things to the Islanders but you have to admit, him…watching Luongo in the Olympics…having to comment on what could now be Canada’s saving grace…is FU#(%&*^ hysterical. Even if you don’t have an opinion on him, that is still funny. The irony is overwhelming. His apparent dislike for canadian players makes it funnier.

I was kidding around, I hate Milbury. I probably have six or ten articles posted about how incompetent he was. It just amuses me that since the start of the Olympics people are searching for Milbury Sucks even more then they used to.

Women's semifinals

Another mid-day start — arghhh. I don’t get it. The 5th/6th and 7th/8th games are in better time slots than U.S.-Sweden semifinal. WTF.

The Nordic Nightcap

So for U.S. fans, in Finland vs. Sweden we’re rooting for an OT game or for a Sweden win (Finland has a +9 goal difference that is equal to the U.S.). That’s if we want the top seed, which I assume we do.

Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.

by Dominik on Feb 21, 2010 11:34 PM EST reply actions

Correct, of course we do.

Also. There is a very good chance that either Russia or Canada will not medal now. Kind of crazy.

by AP77 on Feb 21, 2010 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong...

…but isn’t Canada set at the 6 seed and Russia as the 3 seed, meaning it’s not just a good chance, but a guarantee that at least one of them won’t win a medal (as they’ll play against each other in the quarterfinals… that is unless the Canadians somehow fall to the Germans)

by andrew430 on Feb 22, 2010 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

I believe that's right

On the Forecheck has set up a bracket, and it looks like Russia and Canada are destined for mutually assured destruction.

To be honest, I can’t see that happen. Right now, I’d instead pick three European teams to win the medals… This is how I could see it unfold.

qualifying round
Switzerland beats Belarus – close game
Canada beats Germany – even closer
Czech Republic beats Latvia
Slovakia beats Norway

quarter-finals
USA beat Switzerland – as close as it gets
Russia beats Canada
Sweden beats Slovakia
Czech Republic beats Finland

semi-finals
Czech Republic beats USA
Sweden beats Russia – or Russia beats Sweden ;-)

Bronze
Russia beats US

Gold
Sweden beats Czech Republic

I can’t see the Czech’s beating USA with as hot as Miller is. They just don’t have enough firepower.

As a partisan fan of both, I’d give the objective nod to the U.S. over the Czechs, too. The U.S. youth and physicality … oh yeah, and of course Miller! … would make me bet on them.

That would be THE statement game. Beating them once was a tough accomplishment but if they can beat them twice…and for a gold medal at that…absolute mayhem.

First the U-18 gold medal on Canadian soil. Then the US beats Canada in pool play once again on Candian soil. If you throw a gold medal into that mix for the third time straight…you have a REALLY good rivalry brewing.

Is it just me or is it odd seeing Johnny Oduya wearing 29 for Sweden? I keep seeing 29 in yellow and I think it’s Kenny Jonsson, but its not.

For the most part I felt like I was watching Scott Gordon’s game plan with much more talented players. However, the game plan just felt like Scott Gordon’s. The constant forechecking, tight box/diamond on the PK, protection at both posts defending behind the net…it just felt like Gordon’s game. Perhaps I am wrong but I don’t see a lot of that out of Toronto or the Rangers when we play them.

I dont think youre imagining that. Scott Gordon said (I believe it was on Islanders Authorized) that he is in charge of general offense and the asst coaches are the ones working on special teams.

He must be salivating then, with all these spunky NHL players at his disposal.

I liked what he said about the Swiss, too:

“With the high quality of teams in this tournament, every year the Swiss do not get the credit they deserve. They play as close a style to the North American hockey as any team in the tournament. They have a hard pressuring fore-check and finish every one of their checks. What they lack in scoring, they accomplish what they need to stay in the game with those two key elements.”

It is a shame they left off the and of that quote…

“It is too bad that we will have to crush them like a cah!”

Actually after watching them against Canada, it is easy to see that they have improved as the tourny progressed. Seeing them this time could produce a very different game.

Has anyone else noticed that whenever they show the bench you see Torts and Wilson but you don’t see Gordon? They always say something like, “Gordon is to the left of Wilson (off screen and not showing him).” However they have shown Torts with a smile on his face at least once…and that was pretty funny.

Ha, I have noticed that I haven’t seen Gordon once on the camera. Haven’t picked up on them mentioning him though. Talking to a friend this morning as he was in mid-McGuire rant, I started to realize I am doing a tremendous job tuning out the announcers during this Olympics. I keep hearing references to things McGuire said that I never heard.

So no matter what happens, I win a medal for Expert Television Watching.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the team that Gordon envisions at night before he goes to bed each night. After seeing this performance from the US all the Gorgon haters, not you TMC, should take notice of the success that the team had. Hopefully that carries back to the Islander’s locker room. I know they try but then there are those extended losing streaks that make you wonder how dedicated they are when they aren’t even moving their feet.
