Can-Sui/Slo-Rus [thread]

MSNBC is was the U.S. outlet (joined in progress after the U.S. women beat Finland), but now it's moved to CNBC, in keeping with NBC's abuse of hockey. This thread started as Canada-Switzerland, but if anyone's around for Russia-Slovakia, carry on here. Palffy still looks like an NHL player.

Game has moved back to CNBC

Just to reiterate: The game is now back on CNBC, or so Doc tells us.

What a mess they’ve made of this broadcasting thing. It’s really not hard to peg a hockey game schedule. No reason to join the game six minutes late on one network, then move it back to the scheduled network once curling — which always seems to go late — is finished.

GRRR

I had a great stream of the game, but whoever’s streaming isn’t paying attention so now I have to find another one. This is such bs. How come they can pre-empt their whole prime time lineup on NBC, but they can’t mess with their MSNBC lineup? You’d think they’d be more willing to keep regular shows on NBC and mess with MSNBC or CNBC.

Fun preview from the Canadian side at Copper & Blue, with a look back at the upset of 2006. As Streit just said in the intermission interview, “This time they were ready for us.”

Luongo Vs Brodeur

Okay, I’ll admit I’m a huge Luongo fan, but I think Canada is missing a chance to go with one of the best goalies today in the prime of his career.

This means I’ll probably be proven wrong and they’ll win the Gold behind Brodeur.

It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out. I don’t think either is a mistake, though I am amazed at the fidelity to legend some people profess with Brodeur. I mean, “money goaltending” and all that jazz — we’ve obviously seen him fail in the clutch before, too.

especially lately, do people not remember last years Canes series? Luongo has had his bad runs in the playoffs too, but considering that the Canucks are a 3 man team (Sedin, Sedin, Luongo) them getting to the second round is worth something.

"Martin is psychical" - In reference to Matt Martin being called up to the Islanders.

by Mark D on Feb 18, 2010 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think the Canucks have become more than a 3-man team by now — some of their no-names have emerged — but considering the immediate effect he had on that team, I’d say he’s a more important piece than Brodeur. Particularly after the Devils didn’t miss a beat with Brodeur out last year.

Shhhh. Thats a secret, don’t bring it up to Devil fans. Especially the same Devil fans who predicted last season that Brodeur would play his best Playoffs ever since he was fresh.

True though, there are some more Canucks.

And you know if it weren’t him, that end-of-game playoff hissy fit over perceived interference would have been described as a goalie cracking under the pressure. Not saying he hasn’t earned mountains of accolades, but people let the legend cloud observation.

by Mark D on Feb 18, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

The amateur ideal never really existed in hockey, not with the pro Russian programs and all that. But I do prefer that anyway; the easiest thing would be to move the WJC to the Olympics every four years. (I’m sure Hockey Canada and the rest would never stand for the lost revenue, though.) I think that’s how they still do it in soccer; it’s just a U-23 tournament except each team gets one or a handful of overage exceptions.

Look at it this way. The NHL has gotten some unpopular ideas from the Olympics. First was the shootout, next will be no touch icing.

average/casual

I’m an average/casual fan to, and I don’t really like it. But if they didn’t have it, there would be ties.

I’m ok with that. The NFL has ties in a 16-game season for fuck’s sake.

Yea, but its almost impossible to tie in the NFL.

It’s considered the height of ineptitude if you tie a game.

Chinese goalie was expecting it to be a low shot and dropped and the shot floated high.

Palffy

I wonder if his time on the Islanders spoiled him? Even on the Kings it was still him and Smolinski as the top line. Yet he infamously wasn’t willing to share the spotlight with Crosby on the Pens and even in his last season still managed a point a game. Watching him now he still had a few more good NHL seasons in him.

I think I’ve mentioned this on here before, but he kind of galvanized my relationship with this team. I am too young for the Dynasty itself, I’m sure many of us are, but I grew up getting to see the Capital District Islanders, and watching the big team on a fuzzy MSG feed when they played. However, It wasn’t until my first official Isles jersey, the Palffy fisherman, that I really knew this was it. It’s the little things that spur on some great moments with a team you root for, and he not only was an excellent player to watch, but obviously one of the largest reasons I love the team so much, it’ll always be a shame to know he had to leave.

by albeezle on Feb 19, 2010 2:00 AM EST up reply actions

I think its a pretty even mix between the regulars of people who were around for the Dynasty and for the 90s and beyond kiddies. For me it was Glenn Healy and the 93 run that solidified it. I became a huge Turregon fan after Healy left, and then I got a Turregon jersey/shirt and Maloney trades him 2 weeks later.

Palffy though was always one of those great reasons to watch the Islanders, between him and Salo they both had a ton of talent. Its too bad that they just couldn’t put together the pieces around them.

Palffy is one of the trades I don’t bust Milbury on, as the word from above was to trade him. It always seemed like a matter of time considering Palffy was just so far above everyone else on the team.

It was never clear to me with Palffy’s move away from North America. I remember he was battling a nagging (or worse) back injury when he parted from the Penguins. Maybe that was just cover for bailing, or maybe he knew the hockey would be less physically taxing back home?

“Hours after Palffy retired, the Penguins traded a sixth-round draft pick to Florida for 6-foot-6 defenseman Eric Cairns, who could provide a physical presence to help protect Crosby.”

So of course I can’t find anything to back it up now.

Looking through the articles he cited personal reasons, but everyone said it was either his back or shoulder.

I think the Pens sucked, he was 33, was the #2 target for goons to take out, and he didn’t want to relive his Islanders days. Especially since he managed to return to playing in the less taxing hockey in Slovakia.

USA hockey question

Why do you think the US has never produced a world-class hockey talent? We’ve had some great players, but no Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Ovechkin. In international hockey, we need a team effort or goaltender help. Even in the everyday NHL, an American has n ever been the best player. They’ve won awards, but did an American hockey player ever strike you as the best in the league? It’s just something I thought about. What do you folks think?

by billymac23 on Feb 19, 2010 2:34 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Beezer or Richter? They were both easily at or near the top of the goalie class. Richter almost willed the Rangers to victories after they started signing every expensive star who did nothing.

Beezer had some incredible runs with the Panthers

LaFontaine, Leetch, Chelios and Modano too. Now that I’m thinking about it.

Miller might be considered great if he carries this US team to the Gold/Silver and if the Sabres get to the Cup Finals.

you know, we’ve had LaFontaine, Chelios, Leetch, Richter, Modano …

it’s some perspective. I agree that Canada especially has more notable superstars, but these guys are junior amateurs up there and they get traded for compensation at sometimes 14 years old. Look at Mike Bossy’s story growing up, this was a guy whose family moved around with him, and to an extent, got by because of him. Up until you’re 18, you’re not making money in the US, and the same rhetoric applies to the NCAA, so Canada and the international community offers up some more liberal opportunities to be bred into the hockey life. Just a thought, not necessarily an answer.

From my limited experience coaching youth hockey, the guys I coached with would tell me horror stories of the best team in the area they could get together going up to Canada and just being routed like it was nothing.

Supposedly its just a life style. You wake up, go play hockey outside for an hour or two, go to school, come home and play hockey until its dark all year round. With the difference between climates, its not surprising.

My friends brother would lead 10-12 year old divisions in scoring as an 8 and 9 year old. One time a traveling team put him on their “In House” league because he tried out for the older team. His team ended up being undefeated, getting mercy wins almost every game and him having a 70 or 80 point season in 10-12 games. He continued to dominate at the High School level, making the main varsity team as a Sophmore after leading the Frosh team to the championship. This was in the NYC Catholic HS League. He won a ton of awards and put up a bunch of points. But when it came time for college, he had to chose between a division 1 team that was bottom of the barrel or a D2 team that was highly regarded. He ended up going to Albany or somewhere near Albany I think, getting depressed and hating it and leaving college. So now he just plays in a mens league and dominates that.

He’s probably not the only one like that, in which you get to the College level and it just sort of fizzles, or going to a good hockey college school means going to a state that is frozen and being in the middle of nowhere.
