Women's Tournament

Not really sure if anyone else has been watching the women's tournament, but it has been surprisingly good hockey so far.  I have never really watched too much women's hockey in the past.  In 1998, the first year they were in the Olympics, the hockey, to be honest, was not very good.  But to see how much improved the game has gotten in only 12 years is pretty amazing.

The only downside in my opinion is that there is no checking.  But the game is very wide open due to that; so maybe it's not all bad.

Just a quick post to try and open people's eyes to it.  Canada is playing Sweden right now on MSNBC.  Check it out!

I don't know...

I watched some of the Women’s game between US and Russia, and up 13-0 it was obvious that the US was just trying not to score anymore.

Is there anyone else in the tourney other then US and Canada that can do something? I was planing on watching the Gold medal match.

BTW: The bit I was listening to, Cammi Granato said that she’s all for allowing more checks in women’s hockey.

Yes there is a huge drop off between the top and the bottom teams. US and Canada are easily the best teams. But Sweden and Finland are capable of upsets. It’s kind of like the 1992 dream team. No one was even in the same stratosphere as them in 1992, but only a decade later the competition was much closer. It’s starting to become that way in Women’s hockey too.

not my thing..but rooting for them

I just don’t want to see women in contact sports unless it involves mud and wrestling John Candy. That said, I am rooting for them, and admire that they play, and encourage women to continue pursuing these things..but I probably will never watch unless my daughter decide to play

Like WebBard said there is no body checking- so there really isnt all that much contact per se.

Ive never watched womens hockey before, but I like it. That girl Erika Lawler, the smallest girl on the team who unfortunately hurt her ankle, is the same size as me (5’2") Thats so cool lol.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

I’ve watched them before, and the U.S. and Canada really are impressive. It’s nice they have each other to lock horns with. But the rest of the tourney with the lopsided scores depresses me and tempts me gripe about the Olympics more than I already do.

Sorry the 5’2" is hurt; that’d be fun to see. I do think their game plays better on the smaller ice. Last time around it looked like they were at sea on the international rink.

actually, When I was watching the game, Cammi Granato was commenting that she thinks they should allow some checking. Basically clean open ice hits, because sometimes your going to just try to stop someone going forward and you get called for it when there’s nothing you could do.

I really don't get why they don't allow checking

Seriously. I’m pretty sure the women could handle it.
