Canada v. Norway [thread]

Just putting this up for anyone who is watching Canada vs. Norway (7:30 EST, CNBC/RDS/CTV) and wants to chat or comment on the game here. (I'll see some of it but I'm not sure how much). SBN's hockey hub also has a game thread up. For a closer look at the Norwegians, you know the FanPost.

P.S.

My, in catching the Swiss-USA game on recording, it wasn’t as close as the score. Swiss were physical, disciplined — but clearly overmatched.

It’s Japan – USA womens curling on CNBC here

I ended up watching that waiting for the Russian – American Women’s hockey game. When I finally got up to check the TV in the living room I saw the score was 13-0. I was better off watching the curling match.

The whole women’s tourney is just embarrassing. I cringe every time it comes on.

Curling, on the other hand, is somehow mesmerizing.

agree

The third period was a bit what I had expected at the beginning. Nice urgency by the Swiss (for their standards), defenders getting involved, the US on their heels, etc. It had always been clear that the Swiss were going to be overmatched sooner or later, but it was pretty disappointing that they were able to get their game going only when the US seemed to relax already. I’d have been happy with the performance if the 3rd period had been the 1st and the 1st and 2nd periods had been the 2nd and 3rd…

No doubt, the US were always in control, but I don’t think they played very well, to be honest. Of course, it was only game number 1, but they have to improve lots of things indeed. The Swiss were really poor in the first and especially in the 2nd period, no urgency, lots of bad decisions and turnovers in their own zone, awful defending anyway. They kind of played the game like it was on a European rink. From what I’ve seen, the Norwegians have adjusted much better to the smaller rink, at least in the 1st period.
Certain parts of the US game were a bit sloppy, I thought. Especially in the 2nd period, they passed the puck around way too much, could surely have scored more goals if they had been a bit more determined. The PP was quite disappointing, too. The PK was good, though, have to say that, unfortunately – Drury and Callahan did a good job. No chance really for Streit to get a (good) shot off. Overall, Streit’s game was solid, but nothing particular, played only 22:33.

Yeah, I thought the Swiss almost held back or played too conservatively? Then they weren’t able to convert when the U.S. took chances and gave up odd-man rushes.

The U.S. blueline worries me; lot of potential, lot of risk. The two Johnsons are pups.

Yes, exactly. Might have been a bit nervous at the beginning or whatever. But that was surely not what the gameplan had looked like. Some aspects were really disappointing, anyway, they held onto the puck too long, etc. In my opinion, they’d have to keep it more simple, just get the puck out as quickly as possible, dump it in, shoot the puck more often and especially hit the net more often.

Indeed, not a very promising performance by the US blueline. As someone who follows St. Louis closely, don’t you think Erik Johnson is having a pretty good season? I haven’t seen a lot, but whenever I watched St. Louis, I liked Johnson very much. Yesterday, he might not have been particularly strong, but still quite good, I thought. Pretty patient with the puck, got involved nicely a few times early on.

Erik Johnson

Yes, definitely. He’s had a very promising season, with maybe a month-long lull in the middle (not bad coming off of reconstructive knee surgery). I thought he made some nice plays yesterday, and he’s easily the more complete Johnson.

I just worry in the context of the rest of the blueline if he might be prone to risks in this tourney — stuff that won’t burn you against the Swiss but will burn you against Canada or Russia. Just me airing worries…lot of odd-man rushes given up yesterday.

I had nearly the same deal; it was on one XNBC for most of the first, then another XNBC for the rest. Bah, Olympics.

Fuck NBC

I didn’t realize that the game started on MSNBC until 10 minutes were gone in the 1st, THEN when it switches over 3-4 minutes are lost in the transition.

As for what I saw of the first, Norges Ishockey Landslaget was impressive. Grotnes needed to be on the top of his game and he was. Bush league move by Crosby pushing 39 year old 5’8" Tommy Jakobsen down, The dude is old enough to be your father. Should have been offsetting penalties instead of a PP for Canada, but can’t expect to get those calls when you’re playing against Canada in Canada.

Looks like Tommy Jakobsen will be putting up Streit like minutes tonight. Without OK Tollefsen, Norway is missing a lot of size and a good deal of minutes on the blue line. Might be worth watching as the game progresses.
