Islanders-Lightning [Biron Showcase game thread]
Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Islanders, Feb 13, 2010 2:00 PM EST
Rick DiPietro misses this weekend with the Biron1 Showcase1 flu, so today the Martin Biron Trade Showcase Week continues. Get your tickets, make your offers, if Dominic Moore is still worth a second-round pick, then I'm not gonna part with this shiny piece of vintage Biron for just your average Dawes and Drury, ya hear?
Idle reading: A modest proposal from Copper & Blue's Derek Zona for NHL division realignment, that's surprisingly simple an dashingly lovely, in that it restores the Patrick Division and brings the Capitals home -- one of my longest-running crusades. For something completely different that is interesting in concept but needs revisions (in my book), check out Raw Charge's proposal from last fall, focusing on changing the assumption that the conferences should be split by East/West.
Here is your Lighthouse Hockey game thread, for in-game chat, emoting and general tomfoolery. When it's a Saturday matinee, sometimes there's bacon.

Ah...
It’s nice when the Isles game is on during the Olympics, something else people can whine about more than the team! woo.
The only thing worth watching on the Olympics is hockey, which is getting bumped to MSNBC time and time again. Hooray! Good thing the NHL has a contract with NBC, or you know they might screw with Hockey.

Tbh, I’m not the biggest Olympic fan, but I do enjoy most the the events. I like the events dependent on empirical evidence like the speed skating that is based on numbers and order… figure skating… eh… all very arbitrary. I thought the opening ceremonies were interesting, and I’m rooting for Georgia and Bermuda as darkhorses!
Bob Barker would like to know how much THIS Martin Biron showcase is worth today on The Price is Right!

Did I miss something, or did the NHL hire Tim Donaghy as their newest official?

Kerry Fraser is one of [if not the most] noticeable official in the league, in my opinion, and not for good reasons.

Dam Snow
I still need to shovel my walkway. Thankfully my landlord got a Plow for the driveway considering that shovelling anything other then my steps isn’t my responsibility.
Figure I’ll head down during 1st intermission.

We have a snow blower, but theres an adjustable chute. The chute never stays in position once you adjust it so its like walking through a blizzard.

Not a big fan

Anyone check this kid out? He had a pretty impressive season in the USHL a few years ago, 69 Points in 56 games. Been playing college this year and last. Had 29 points last year for North Dakota in 42 games, this year he has 24 points already in 29 games.
Of course he’s a left wing.

Holy Fuck
Where was the boarding on the Okposo slam!?!?!?!?!?
Great move to steal that puck, but what the hell after the blocked shot?
I hate the "new" divisions and always have
Dallas should probably replace Washington in the SE division.
I miss the days when the top four in each division made the playoffs. Made for much better interdivisional rivalries.
I miss when you used to have Divison champs. The last banner the Isles have hanging is the 93 Divison championship.

No they dont.
Unfortunately, that Patrick division banner is gone.

I would love to know the entire story on why the banner was given away and to whom, but I dont.

Protecting Tavares
Rewinding, I think that fight happened because Thompson just hit Tavares at the blueline — unless it was a defenseman who handed off the penance to Thompson.

I don’t know if any of you caught the article on Japers’ Rink earlier in the week where DMG talked about fights after clean hits. This is a perfect example of why they will never stop. As a neutral fan I don’t see any reason there had to be a fight because that was clean, but you guys are fans and want to see someone stand up for your cornerstone player. Tough situation.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I didn’t get a chance to read it, but I’d bet money I agree with it and have written similarly.
I don’t think it’s fans driving it, though. It’s 700 NHL players, the bottom 100-200 of whom rotate in and out each year and who may get job security by fighting, all pretending there’s some established “code” yet being completely unable to agree on what that code is.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Yeah you’re definitely right it’s the players, not the fans. I’ve never seen a fighter look around and check for fan approval before exacting retribution. But maybe if there was agreement among fans they could push the league to do something? That’s probably a pipe dream.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Re: Fans, I was thinking of the atmosphere around the game, but now that I think about it, I’m sure they feed it. Fighting sells.
Probably a pipe dream, yeah. But I don’t totally fault the NHL; they’re dealing with several different, passionate opinion groups on this that cross the boundaries of fans, coaches, players, GMs.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Yeah, it’s hard to take the league in a coherent direction when you don’t even have consensus.
I’d have an easier time believing the fan atmosphere was driving it if it was always the home team fighting after a clean hit, but I don’t think that’s the case. I think it’s just a reflexive “Star gets hit —> Fight” impulse from the checking line players.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
By atmosphere, I just meant that a huge segment loves fighting and players feed off it.
I yearn for the day when a legal hit is again answered with … a legal hit.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Yeah, imagine that. When someone hits Tavares you guys go out and hit Stamkos. I guess that just doesn’t have the same deterrent value as 4th liners fighting 4th liners.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Hahaha. … But look at what Martin fighting Thompson accomplished! Two friends who are supposed to throw legit punches at each other (and did in fact), then commend each other in the box afterward: Now no one will hit Tavares the rest of the night, it is written in the code.
I do not envy the job these guys do, but I can’t escape how surreal it is. The cognitive dissonance is overwhelming.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Yeah it really would be an interesting psych profile. It’s also crazy that so many goons have reputation as being extremely nice guys off the ice. Brashear has that rep, and he plays classical piano. Stu Grimson got a law degree when he retired. …then there’s Bob Probert.

Has been reeal good for Tampa lately…picked him up on fantasy squad. He was a late first rounder.
Seems like he’s finally putting it together and curbing the stupidity. I’m sure playing with choice linemates helps.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Wow. Robbie Schremp with an amazing pass on that NYI goal. Didn’t catch it the first time around. Incredible job. Do you all think he’s finally finding his NHL game or is he going to be an endless tease?

My sense is he’s finding his NHL game. He hasn’t had first-class linemates, either. But the niche is always going to be hard. He’s going to be blocked by a few pieces at center, so he needs to stay responsible and hopefully be a useful part on the PP.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
At the very least he’s making some other GMs think he’d be a valuable player. Moving from C to W is the easiest move to make so he should be able to do that if that’s what it takes to stay with NYI but maybe a team looking for C depth makes a play for him.

hey… look at it this way. He’s getting fairly regular ice time… how is Edmonton doing this year? uh… whoops. Bet they wish they had an extra good forward or two huh?
Yeah that blew up in EDM’s face pretty well. What a mess of an organization. How long is Lowe going to continue to get by because his team got hot and made the SCF a few years back? He’s terrible.

Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Definitely not! I wonder why he couldn’t succeed there, doesn’t make much sense to me. Maybe he is a guy that needs ot have the puck in the middle of the ice to make things happen.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I wich Comeau had answered Hamonic
when he responsed to the Stamkos question.
I think
he’s getting it. And he will definitely benefit from consistent and marginally talented linemates. Tough to be a whiz when the linemates are changed from Sim, Park, Jackman, etc. etc. They need to keep him with someone consistent, defensively responsible and who can get him some space. I think though that would cause us to have too many men on the ice.
Just a thought
and as emotional as it may be…It seems like Nate did that (obliged Martin and congratulated him) because he really liked this team. There was really no other reason to do it.
Definitely a respect thing going on there. Considering all of the other expectations and circumstances, they handled that perfectly — and thankfully didn’t break each other’s faces, either.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Martin - Thompson
watching the replay of the fight and the penalty box congrats .. Reminiscent of Guerin scraps. Like the respect and maturity of both guys to be honest.
Why don't they just ask for their poll question
“should the olympic hockey teams go back to allowing just college and junior players to play again?”
I’m sick of the professionals playing. I’d rather see the kids. At least we get a look at the future stars of the game.
The Soviets ruined that. They were sending better than pro players every year. Til the USA beat them, ice hockey in the Olympics was boring and frustrating.
Change at Woodside for the old Shea Stadium station! Lets Go!
And now it seems like the WJC has filled the void.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
No to offend anyone personally, but the Soviets are dirtbags. They’ll bypass the written and unwritten rules as much as they can. Watching them lose is more rewarding the Canada – USA. ugh.
The Soviets don't exist anymore
They’ve been out of action for about 20 years now.
Here's the problem
The CHL players get paid. Are they amateurs? By the definition of the word, no. So if you go to an “amateur only” tournament you either bastardize “amateur” or you make most of the future stars ineligible. If you just say “No NHL” then the KHL is going to stock Team Russia and the SEL will stock Team Sweden.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
the other large problem is outside of North America, many other countries don’t have nearly the infrastructure to develop amateur hockey in the scope that USA and Canada do.
True, which may be part of the reason CZE and SLO are in decline. But SWE and RUS are always going to be able to develop good hockey players, it’s ingrained in them.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I wish I could link you to a great article I was reading on this particle situation. Even Russia is affected quite a bit. From what I remember the majority of Russia’s junior development comes directly from Moscow. But hey.. I guess Belarus and Latvia can get teams to the Olympics, so there is always a chance.
Yeah, actually I realized I was kinda wrong as I wrote it. Sweden suffered a serious decline in talent in the late 90s, early 2000s because from the youth level on up their national program forced the kids to trap. They hated it because it was boring so kids stopped playing. About 5 years ago they got a new national hockey director and he told them to stop forcing the trap and focus on individual skill. The turnaround has been obvious. Keep that in mind next time some NJD fan tries to argue with you about the merits of the trap.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Yep. One thing the Czechs once had going for them was central funding and a motivation to beat the Russians’ ass. Now: neither, really.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Plus you split the country up so they have to try to form two teams with not enough talent. The Olympic team would be one of the favorites if they never broke up. But they did.

Now, certainly. But the old infrastructure and supply was so strong, the Czechs (and Slovaks) still did pretty well even after the split.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
True, the Czechs have a gold. But their systems have both been struggling a lot lately. They keep getting worse in the WJC and having fewer guys drafted. At some point they are going to need to figure out a solution or become irrelevant.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
That’s what I mean. Their systems created a talent pool that was still deep enough to support two teams after the split, but they happened to split just as that central governmental support was going away, so now almost 20 years later we’re seeing the result.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
After KHL and SEL? I wonder what the rules are about foreign players there. Is it primarily made up of homegrown boys or do Russians and Canadians play a large role?

Cannot say about the 02, maybe dom can, but I know in Russia Emery was limited to under 50% of the games to support the promulgation of domestic talent.
KHL definitely has a rule limiting the foreigners. Maybe Emery was only limited to 50% of the games because he’s not very good? Joking, Russia is notorious for that kind of PR crap.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
To be honest, it’s a brilliant move to develop talent when you have a limited base or infrastructure to work with. Putin has done a lot to regulate the barons and pour their money into national athletic development as well, even after his PM role.
Winning is better. They consistently put KHL players on the national team at the expense of NHL players. It makes no sense except to prop up the KHL and say “see, we are as good as the NHL” which is patently false. I hate it when Team USA does the same shit; they highlight NCAA players at the expense of CHL players and they frequently leave a lot of talent off the team. This year they let on more CHL players than they have in the past, and look how it worked out.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
true, but so little Russian talent in the NHL anymore. Not anemic yet, but the KHL is certainly growing. Afraid to play power hockey apparently.
Well the elite players are still all here. It’s the guys that would be 3/4th line and bottom D pair that are staying over. I don’t really mind because those guys are pretty easily replaceable. When top line talent starts fleeing I’ll be worried.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
It’s going to be hard to actually “see” it Fehr. Take Kirill Petrov for example. Would you take a few cool mil up front to play at the top KHL level, or a a few hundred grand on a three yr entry deal with the chance or working in the AHL for a while? The cost benefit for the Russians doesn’t seem to be what it was.
You’re right. But he’s not an elite player yet, he wouldn’t be doing a ton in the NHL. He can still develop in the KHL but when his entry level years are up and he reaches his prime I bet he comes over here. I bet Radulov comes back in a couple years as well, and he’ll be a better player than when he left.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I guess that’s the big question that we’re waiting for huh? You would think more Russians would follow Malkin and Ovechkin’s lead, but maybe it’s a comfort and style thing as well. It’s certainly hard to gauge at the moment.
Well most players aren’t NHL impact players at 18-19, so they couldn’t follow those leads. Them staying in Russia to develop is no different than Americans and Canadians playing CHL/NCAA and AHL before they go to the NHL, IMO. The bigger problem is about how the KHL forces them into contracts and makes it very difficult to leave if they don’t do it immediately.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
agreed on the contracts thing, but whereas you might see the KHL as a development league, they might see it as a professional level top tier league. That’s what I’m getting at.
Yeah, they definitely see it like that. But automatic contract extensions are still bullshit.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I wonder how contracts work for Americans. If you’re familiar with Brandon Sugden (former camp guy for NYI and was in Hershey) he ended up over there as a thumper, and was involved in that 600+ PIM game. Don’t hear too much about those guys one way or the other.
The Czech Republic only had 3 players drafted this past year. That was the lowest amount since the split.

I really want to say the southeast isn’t doing it much at all. …. But then I recall how TB and CAR have a few more cups than us recently…
Yeah they’ve had some good teams but none of them have been able to sustain success, and there haven’t been enough playoff battles to develop the hatred a rivalry needs. They are generally one and done, but the Caps are changing that. They’ll be good for a long time.

Yeah, the hockey is exciting, they just don’t have the passion in the stands. It’s always more fun when the fan bases don’t like each other. I really think that Caps fans don’t care at all about any of the other fan bases with the (newly minted) possible exception of CAR.

I think you need to maintain the geographic rivalries. Keep NYI, NYR, NJD together. Keep TOR, OTT together. Keep ANA, SJS, LAK together. Etc. They just break it up and make it hodge podge.

I’ll go with what I said in the Pregame thread. Tuesday’s crowd was rocking and it was a Value ticket game. I bet this crowd is smaller cause its a Silver ticket game.

He can play center, but I’m afraid he’s in decline — or at least this has been a baaad year for him. Last year was much better. Though sometimes grinders are like middle relievers, alternating useful performances in some inexplicable rotation.
I’ll miss him though. When he’s on form, his versatility is very nice to have.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
He can skate, he’s versatile, and he kills the Caps. That’s pretty much what I know about him.

Hahaha, sweet. It really was great. Weight undressed Bochenski at the blueline, fed a streaking Park who got a shot from one side, picked up the rebound on his way around the net and tried the wraparound, picked up the rebound of that as he was skating backwards and fired it bad-angle into the upper corner.

Sell high!
Incidentally,I know you don’t want Sutton, but the reason people put him and the Caps together has to be images of Crosby standing at the doorstep unmolested last Spring.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
I know exactly why they say that, but the way to stop Crosby is not to stand a man on top of the crease; it’s to send out a guy that can skate with him and have him play in his hip pocket. The days of Derian Hatcher are over. Let’s say we do get Sutton, and tell him to just sit on the crease and wait for Crosby, how many other areas is he a liability? He’s not going to be getting the puck, and certainly not doing anything to clear it. It’s just oversimplified and short-sighted, IMO.
