Islanders-Lightning [Biron Showcase game thread]

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Islanders, Feb 13, 2010 2:00 PM EST

Tampa Bay Lightning (26-22-11, 9th/E) at New York Islanders (24-28-8, 13th/E)

Now 100% less Barrie: Raw Charge

Rick DiPietro misses this weekend with the Biron1 Showcase1 flu, so today the Martin Biron Trade Showcase Week continues. Get your tickets, make your offers, if Dominic Moore is still worth a second-round pick, then I'm not gonna part with this shiny piece of vintage Biron for just your average Dawes and Drury, ya hear?

Idle reading: A modest proposal from Copper & Blue's Derek Zona for NHL division realignment, that's surprisingly simple an dashingly lovely, in that it restores the Patrick Division and brings the Capitals home -- one of my longest-running crusades. For something completely different that is interesting in concept but needs revisions (in my book), check out Raw Charge's proposal from last fall, focusing on changing the assumption that the conferences should be split by East/West.

Here is your Lighthouse Hockey game thread, for in-game chat, emoting and general tomfoolery. When it's a Saturday matinee, sometimes there's bacon.

Ah...

It’s nice when the Isles game is on during the Olympics, something else people can whine about more than the team! woo.

The only thing worth watching on the Olympics is hockey, which is getting bumped to MSNBC time and time again. Hooray! Good thing the NHL has a contract with NBC, or you know they might screw with Hockey.

Tbh, I’m not the biggest Olympic fan, but I do enjoy most the the events. I like the events dependent on empirical evidence like the speed skating that is based on numbers and order… figure skating… eh… all very arbitrary. I thought the opening ceremonies were interesting, and I’m rooting for Georgia and Bermuda as darkhorses!

We have a snow blower, but theres an adjustable chute. The chute never stays in position once you adjust it so its like walking through a blizzard.

Do have my own plow, but I have a 200 ft driveway. I like shoveling most of the time though, if only to save gas and get outside. Can’t complain about Upstate NY.

As far as the chute goes web, I imagine you could replace the nut and bolt at the pivot to tighten it up, might help.

I don’t know if any of you caught the article on Japers’ Rink earlier in the week where DMG talked about fights after clean hits. This is a perfect example of why they will never stop. As a neutral fan I don’t see any reason there had to be a fight because that was clean, but you guys are fans and want to see someone stand up for your cornerstone player. Tough situation.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t get a chance to read it, but I’d bet money I agree with it and have written similarly.

I don’t think it’s fans driving it, though. It’s 700 NHL players, the bottom 100-200 of whom rotate in and out each year and who may get job security by fighting, all pretending there’s some established “code” yet being completely unable to agree on what that code is.

Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.

by Dominik on Feb 13, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah you’re definitely right it’s the players, not the fans. I’ve never seen a fighter look around and check for fan approval before exacting retribution. But maybe if there was agreement among fans they could push the league to do something? That’s probably a pipe dream.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Re: Fans, I was thinking of the atmosphere around the game, but now that I think about it, I’m sure they feed it. Fighting sells.

Probably a pipe dream, yeah. But I don’t totally fault the NHL; they’re dealing with several different, passionate opinion groups on this that cross the boundaries of fans, coaches, players, GMs.

Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.

by Dominik on Feb 13, 2010 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it’s hard to take the league in a coherent direction when you don’t even have consensus.

I’d have an easier time believing the fan atmosphere was driving it if it was always the home team fighting after a clean hit, but I don’t think that’s the case. I think it’s just a reflexive “Star gets hit —> Fight” impulse from the checking line players.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.

by Dominik on Feb 13, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, imagine that. When someone hits Tavares you guys go out and hit Stamkos. I guess that just doesn’t have the same deterrent value as 4th liners fighting 4th liners.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Feb 13, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Hahaha. … But look at what Martin fighting Thompson accomplished! Two friends who are supposed to throw legit punches at each other (and did in fact), then commend each other in the box afterward: Now no one will hit Tavares the rest of the night, it is written in the code.

I do not envy the job these guys do, but I can’t escape how surreal it is. The cognitive dissonance is overwhelming.

At the very least he’s making some other GMs think he’d be a valuable player. Moving from C to W is the easiest move to make so he should be able to do that if that’s what it takes to stay with NYI but maybe a team looking for C depth makes a play for him.

he’s getting it. And he will definitely benefit from consistent and marginally talented linemates. Tough to be a whiz when the linemates are changed from Sim, Park, Jackman, etc. etc. They need to keep him with someone consistent, defensively responsible and who can get him some space. I think though that would cause us to have too many men on the ice.

Here's the problem

The CHL players get paid. Are they amateurs? By the definition of the word, no. So if you go to an “amateur only” tournament you either bastardize “amateur” or you make most of the future stars ineligible. If you just say “No NHL” then the KHL is going to stock Team Russia and the SEL will stock Team Sweden.

by Rob Parker on Feb 13, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

the other large problem is outside of North America, many other countries don’t have nearly the infrastructure to develop amateur hockey in the scope that USA and Canada do.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

True, which may be part of the reason CZE and SLO are in decline. But SWE and RUS are always going to be able to develop good hockey players, it’s ingrained in them.

I wish I could link you to a great article I was reading on this particle situation. Even Russia is affected quite a bit. From what I remember the majority of Russia’s junior development comes directly from Moscow. But hey.. I guess Belarus and Latvia can get teams to the Olympics, so there is always a chance.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, actually I realized I was kinda wrong as I wrote it. Sweden suffered a serious decline in talent in the late 90s, early 2000s because from the youth level on up their national program forced the kids to trap. They hated it because it was boring so kids stopped playing. About 5 years ago they got a new national hockey director and he told them to stop forcing the trap and focus on individual skill. The turnaround has been obvious. Keep that in mind next time some NJD fan tries to argue with you about the merits of the trap.

To be honest, it’s a brilliant move to develop talent when you have a limited base or infrastructure to work with. Putin has done a lot to regulate the barons and pour their money into national athletic development as well, even after his PM role.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Winning is better. They consistently put KHL players on the national team at the expense of NHL players. It makes no sense except to prop up the KHL and say “see, we are as good as the NHL” which is patently false. I hate it when Team USA does the same shit; they highlight NCAA players at the expense of CHL players and they frequently leave a lot of talent off the team. This year they let on more CHL players than they have in the past, and look how it worked out.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Well the elite players are still all here. It’s the guys that would be 3/4th line and bottom D pair that are staying over. I don’t really mind because those guys are pretty easily replaceable. When top line talent starts fleeing I’ll be worried.

It’s going to be hard to actually “see” it Fehr. Take Kirill Petrov for example. Would you take a few cool mil up front to play at the top KHL level, or a a few hundred grand on a three yr entry deal with the chance or working in the AHL for a while? The cost benefit for the Russians doesn’t seem to be what it was.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

You’re right. But he’s not an elite player yet, he wouldn’t be doing a ton in the NHL. He can still develop in the KHL but when his entry level years are up and he reaches his prime I bet he comes over here. I bet Radulov comes back in a couple years as well, and he’ll be a better player than when he left.

I guess that’s the big question that we’re waiting for huh? You would think more Russians would follow Malkin and Ovechkin’s lead, but maybe it’s a comfort and style thing as well. It’s certainly hard to gauge at the moment.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Well most players aren’t NHL impact players at 18-19, so they couldn’t follow those leads. Them staying in Russia to develop is no different than Americans and Canadians playing CHL/NCAA and AHL before they go to the NHL, IMO. The bigger problem is about how the KHL forces them into contracts and makes it very difficult to leave if they don’t do it immediately.

by albeezle on Feb 13, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

I know exactly why they say that, but the way to stop Crosby is not to stand a man on top of the crease; it’s to send out a guy that can skate with him and have him play in his hip pocket. The days of Derian Hatcher are over. Let’s say we do get Sutton, and tell him to just sit on the crease and wait for Crosby, how many other areas is he a liability? He’s not going to be getting the puck, and certainly not doing anything to clear it. It’s just oversimplified and short-sighted, IMO.

" No, you’d have to have an Olympic Games flashback to 1936 and watch the pride of Hitler’s Germany marching into the Berlin stadium to match the feeling of revulsion I experience every time I see the Flyers play.

Especially against the Canadiens. "
